Policy Brief Poster Session
It’s the policy-brief-poster-presentation-time-of-the-year again! IEDP students get to present their researches on various policy issues in education around the world to faculty, peers, and other guests at GSE.
Coffee with Dr. Jennifer Riggan
Dr. Jennifer Riggan joined us this week for the semester’s last IEDP Faculty Coffee Connections - yes we moved to the outside because the weather was so nice!
Dr. Riggan shared her experiences in Eritrea and East Africa as a former Peace Corps volunteer and later as a researcher. It was an informative and interesting conversation that covered topics in civic education, nationalism, academia, etc.
Dr. Riggan was also a guest speaker for #IEDPLectures in 2013. Click here to watch the talk.
IEDP Alumni Day
The month of April started with IEDP graduates coming back home - Welcome back IEDP Alumni!
Current IEDPers learned about post-IEDP lives of the alumni at the Alumni Panel. While they have different paths, all have lived out the IEDP spirit no matter where they are!
After the panel, conversations continued at “Meet & Greet” at Doc’s. Looks like people had a lot of fun (and free food)!
The night of fun concluded with IEDP Trivia (s/o to Dave) and Josh’s “Development Song”... Come back again, alumni!
IEDPLectures: Dr. Julian Cristia
This week, we welcomed the last (but not least) guest speaker of this semester’s #IEDPLectures series: Dr. Julian Cristia. He is the Lead Economist in the Research Department at the Inter-American Development Bank.
Dr. Cristia talked about a recent study he had conducted - a meta-analysis on cost-effectiveness of technology interventions in developing countries.
ICT4D is an area with so many unanswered questions. That is why: “more research is needed.”
IEDPLectures: Dr. Pia Britto
The #IEDPLecture by Dr. Pia Britto, Senior Advisor on ECD at UNICEF, was the highlight of the week for many of us. She talked about Early Childhood Development and the role of scientific evidence in advocacy and policy-making.
The presentation sparked many interesting questions from the audience. Dr. Britto was truly an encouragement for all of us to work to bridge academia and practice.
IEDPLectures: Ms Saniye Gülser Corat
At this week’s #IEDPLecture, we were thrilled to be joined by Ms Saniye Gülser Corat, Director of the Division for Gender Equality, Office of the Director-General, UNESCO.
Ms Corat talked about UNESCO’s vision for promoting gender equality in light of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as her own journey speaking up for the rights of women, girls and gender minorities.
Following her talk, the discussion revolved around women and girls’ literacy, gender equality and counter-terrorism, and reaching men and boys to promote gender equality.
Coffee with Dr. Krystal Strong
On Friday afternoon, Dr. Krystal Strong joined us at IEDP’s 3rd Faculty Coffee Connection. It was a great opportunity to get to know her better, and for her to know us better.
Dr. Strong shared her experiences in conducting ethnographic research in Nigerian universities and transitioning from a doctoral student to a professor. She also talked about her understanding of student politics, activism, role of higher education institutions and social media.
Thank you Dr. Strong for an inspiring afternoon!
Skype Chat with officer @UN Jordan
At this week’s recitation hour, we were honored to speak with Mr. Michael Schaadt, Head of Office & Strategic Planning Specialist at UN Jordan.
The informal conversation covered issues on Syrian refugee crisis, Mr. Schaadt’s professional trajectory and challenges of working at the United Nations, and his career advice for future development workers.
CIES Day 4
Last day at #CIES2016 was highlighted by three wonderful Penn presentations: Caitlin Vaverek’s poster presentation, Dr. Thapa’s presentation on Education in Nepal, and a joint presentation on “Deconstructing the SDGs” by four Doctoral students.
Above: Our amazing Caitlin and the pondering Penn crew.
The past week has been an unforgettable journey of learning for the #IEDP delegation, who will bring back their stories to share with the rest of us in Philadelphia.
CIES Day 3
After finishing up the third day at #CIES2016, we took a little time to reflect upon our observations and learnings over dinner with Dr.Wagner at a Nepali/Indian restaurant in Downtown Vancouver.
The majority of us (except Ty) finally found time to get together for a group photo. #IEDP #RollingDeep
Only one more day to go before heading back to Philly!
CIES Day 2
It’s been another full day of informative sessions and social events at #CIES2016! Scroll down for some photos from today.
The joint reception co-hosted by University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland and George Washington University had a great turnout. We also had the BEST food among all other receptions :)
Top: Steve Klees (UMD), Jim WIlliams (GWU) and our very own Dan Wagner, welcoming the guests.
Above: Guests at the reception.
Below: More photos from today... Sessions, taking a break, and getting ready before the reception.
CIES Day 1
VANCOUVER - Comparative and International Education Society’s Annual Conference begins today. Contrary to enjoying a relaxing Spring Break, 11 IEDPers are ready for five days of intensive learning, and networking!
Here are some snaps of IEDPers at the ICT4D session facilitated by Penn, chilling at the lobby, and attending the opening ceremony.
Stay tuned for more photos from #CIES2016!
IEDPLectures: Dr. Nancy Hornberger
This week's #IEDPLecture was given by Penn GSE’s very own Dr. Nancy Hornberger on the topic of indigenous language revitalization. It was a 90-minute reflexive journey on ethnography, identities, and human relationships.
Dr. Hornberger talked about her experiences conducting ethnography and ethnographic monitoring in three very different contexts where she has worked for the last four decades: the Andes, South Africa, and Scandinavia.
Following the talk, we had an interesting discussion around ethnography, multilingual education policy and indigenous identities.
Coffee with Dr.Sharon Ravitch
A small group of IEDPers attended the second “IEDP Faculty Coffee Connection” today with Dr. Sharon Ravitch.
Dr. Ravitch shared her experience doing applied development research in Nicaragua and her views on participatory development. It was an hour of inspiring conversation!
Workshop
Students in Dr. Ameena Ghaffar-Kucher's "Curriculum and Pedagogy" Class attended an all-day workshop focusing on the "Understanding By Design" curriculum-building approach.
The day went by quite fast and included a mix of lectures from Dr. GK, interactive activities, project work time, food, and even some "fiddle toys" to stimulate creativity.
Throughout the semester, students will apply their knowledge by creating curricula for use by real organizations. Therefore, this workshop was a helpful jumping off point for these projects.
CLC-B/E!
IEDPers participated in a workshop series on “Navigating Racialized Experiences” given by Dr. Kelsey Jones .
In the first session last week, we learned about the CLC-B/E strategy for dealing with racialized stress and self-care - Calculate, Locate, Communicate, and Breathe/Exhale.
In the second session today, we delved deeper in conversations around racialized experiences and applied what we learned to grow our competencies in dealing with real-life situations.
IEDPLectures: Dr. Marlaine Lockheed
So many great talks have taken place on campus this past week!
On Thursday, Dr. Marlaine Lockheed from Princeton University, our second speaker of the #IEDPLecture series, came to talk about international assessments: Is PISA the answer to monitoring the SDGs?
It was a lively discussion as we have been talking about PISA in many of our classes. IEDPers had a lot of questions for Dr. Lockheed, the “insider” of PISA. Below are snapshots of some question-askers.
