“By means of microscopic observation and astronomical projection the lotus flower can become the foundation for an entire theory of the universe and an agent whereby we may perceive the Truth. And first we must know that each of the petals has eighty-four thousand veins and that each vein gives eighty-four thousand lights.”
— Yukio Mishima, Death in Midsummer, and Other Stories
Georgia O’Keefe Black Cross, New Mexico 1929
“Whosoever would know Secrets, let him know how to keep secret things secretly; and to reveal those things that are to be revealed, and to seal those things which are to be sealed: and not to give holy things to dogs, nor cast pearls before swine. Observe this Law, and the eyes of thy understanding shall be opened, to understand secret things; and thou shalt have whatsoever thy minde desireth to be divinely revealed unto thee.”

The significance of tragedies is most easily grasped on the basis of paradox. Since everything originary, because all powers are divided impartially and equally, does not appear in its original strength, but rather in its weakness, so it is that the light of life and appearance quite properly belong to the weakness of every whole. Now in the tragic, the sign is in itself insignificant, ineffectual, but the originary is forthright. Properly speaking, the originary can only appear in its weakness, but insofar as the sign in itself is posited as insignificant = 0, the originary, the latent ground of every nature can also be presented. If nature properly presents itself in its weakest offering, so it is that the sign, when it presents itself in its strongest offering, = 0.

As long as nothing can be known for sure, (no signals have been picked up yet),
as long as Earth is still unlike the nearer and more distant planets,
as long as there's neither hide nor hair of other grasses graced by other winds, of other treetops bearing other crowns, other animals as well-grounded as our own,
as long as only the local echo has been known to speak in syllables,
as long as we still haven't gotten word of better or worse mozarts, platos, edisons somewhere,
as long as our inhuman crimes are still committed only among humans,
las long as our kindness is still incomparable, peerless even in its imperfection,
as long as our heads packed with illusions still pass for the only heads so packed,
as long as the roofs of our mouths alone still raise voices to high heavens—
let's act like very special guests of honor at the district fireman's ball, dance to the beat of the local oompah band, and pretend that it's the ball to end all balls.
I can't speak for others— for me this is misery and happiness enough:
just this sleepy backwater where even the stars have time to burn while winking at us unintentionally.
Wisława Szymborska ֍ "The Ball." Moment (2002)
