I see everyone infected, including Emma so it's chronologically after the end. He doesn't show up when they introduce him. And then they change their phrasing from ”didn't like musicals " to "doesn't like musicals." They loop back to the beginning of the story and call him a "piece of shit," perhaps in frustration? Maybe it is just a flashback or maybe they are aware and have diagedic power over the flashback? Maybe a Lovecraftian hivemind musical entity without a leading man to support it has no choice by to loop in in itself. Idk, Pokey is weird.

yeah ok let’s get into this! i understand where you’re coming from anon but i actually did have a more nuanced take on this i just hadn’t posted about yet so here it is

i really do appreciate the fact that they kept the nature of their relationship vague, and people can read it as romantic or platonic if they want. to me it read very flirty but i can see how others might not subscribe to that too!

plus it’s less of a “need” to do that and more the fact that shipping and romance are just what i happen to be passionate about?? and what i have the most fun with?? i’m not gonna Not Do the thing that’s most fun for me just because other people might not engage with the play the same way, that’s ludicrous.

also as if people immediately stop being able to be strong or their own people once they enter romantic relationships?? as if tadius would impede her in that?? her story is still about her becoming The Queen. i very much doubt that she would suddenly become “weaker” or less able to live her own life just because they were together, nor did i ever insinuate that

basically you can engage with it however you want anon and i agree that it’s important and worth celebrating that we have a play with a female lead where she doesn’t explicitly end up with anyone romantically!! that’s great and i really do love that!!

but also i just like romance and maybe it’s fine that that was the first very brief thing i said about the play on this one particular platform, because i never said it was my only feeling or thought about it 🙄

i was thinking how in npmd, in act two the blame for max becoming a ghost is placed fully onto steph’s shoulders. it used to strike me as odd because grace is the one that came up with the plan that led to max dying, not steph, she has as much blame as the nerds do. yet she’s the one that “created a literal monster” according to her dad. she’s fucking judas according to max. but it’s just another case where it doesn’t matter what’s actually true or what the audience sees, what matters is how max sees it.

he died having no idea that grace orchestrated the whole thing. she’s more judas than steph is. but since steph is the one that invited him, she gets the blame. and, to max, i don’t think he sees the invite as her first real betrayal. her first betrayal is inviting pete to pasquallis

steph is allowed to be one of the few that benefit from max’s control, she also had no idea he was such a bully. she got to skate by in ignorance. but she still went against his order and invited a nerd, someone beneath her, directly into his turf. max was able to make pete regret that decision and put him back in line. but, just from pete saying steph invited him, jason immediately accepted that was an okay thing to do. a thing that directly threatens and undermines max’s control. when you watch the scene, you can see that max gets aggressive only after jason accepts pete being there as okay. max can already feel his godhood slipping just from steph stepping one foot out of line.

that’s why max could turn so quickly against her when he fell and as a ghost, because she was already on thin ice when she invited him to waylon hall. in max’s insane eyes, why wouldn’t he blame steph?

Max seems oddly protective of the girls in his "in-group" despite expressing no direct interest in them. Like how he similarly wont let Kyle date Brenda and tries to guard Steph from the "ghosts" at Waylon hall.

Max is in love, Exhibit A

Guys the heart eyes he has for Grace when she's handing out her flyers, and it takes him a hot second to realize his buddies are talking shit about her. And he proceeds to pummel them for it.

Total puppydog "Hey Grace!!"

Laughing way too loud at "spunk" and then clarifying with "You're funny!" boy's anxious as hell around her.

And only when she gives a totally arbitrary puritanical excuse not to let him carry her books (which is really an innocent act that SHE is interpreting as a sexual thing, that's the joke) does he resort to the "dirty girl" angle because he can read her like a fucking book. Up until this point Max has been nothing but a gentleman to Grace specifically, which I don't need to tell you is otherwise extremely out-of-character for him.

So I propose to you, dear members of the jury, that Max Jagerman is in fact deeply in love with Grace Chastity and his fuckboy attitude is only a front because Grace is, as he predicted, a total freak, and "forbidden fruit" is a lame excuse to save face around his friends.

dirty girl obviously gives a lot of insight into grace as a character. but i don't think enough people talk about her fantasy version of max. of course, his lyrics foreshadow his fate and that's very important, but just watch him through the whole song.

he pretends to not care at first, but his eyes are always glued to her. yes it's funny when his finger twirling makes grace dizzy, but then she does the same to him, his head swaying side to side as he watches her.

grace's fantasy is not to have max in charge. it may look like it from an outsider's perspective but it's her in control, max looking up at her with stars in his eyes.
