I just think that it'd be funny if, after all this speculation about how horrible Crowley's Fall was and his drunken rambling of "a million-light-year freestyle dive into a pool of boiling sulfur", it turned out he just had the longest most boring elevator ride ever down to basement Hell and then stepped in a very small puddle of warm sludge of questionable origin when the doors opened.
"and now you have a *wet sock* and your mom doesn't love you anymore"
#excited demon noises
The pub scene is even funnier when you consider that poor Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets has likely had this longtime pash on Aziraphale and, like everyone on Whickber Street, he has no idea who exactly The Ginger Goth With The Old Car is. He knows the prevailing theory is mafia but Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets has seen Ginger Goth hanging around Mrs. Sandwich and her "Sandwich Shop" and also around the bookshop a bit and also some naked guy was also at the bookshop recently, so... what's the likeliest conclusion drawn by Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets? That the old bookseller's lonely and paying for it.
He sees them come into the pub and thinks Aziraphale is classy like that and is taking the sex worker for a drink first or maybe that's part of it-- he's gone the whole 'boyfriend experience' route. Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets sees Aziraphale with that chest stroke of that Thin Dark Duke he's paying and while Mr. Brown (of Brown's World of Carpets, just FYI) isn't here to judge and gets it as he's lonely, too... and while he does think the bookseller picks some hot ones... he wants to give Mr. Fell the real thing. The kind of love you can only get between two middle-aged, still-sorta-closeted queers like they are. He'll be someone the bookseller can talk to and find some genuine chemistry with, Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets will be, so he decides to shoot his shot and knows the bookseller is skittish from their past interactions, so he goes for the meeting option. He'll have to come over to drop off the chairs, of course. Give them an excuse to talk more, alone, when Mr. Fell is not, erm, entertaining.
And poor Mr. Brown--President of the Whickber Street Shopkeepers and Traders Association, Mr. Brown of Brown's World of Carpets is-- fine, upstanding, boring as all holy fuck fella... He's met by Crowley coming over with drinks and a greeting that says this is neither the first time, nor, he doubts, will it be the last that he's had to Husband the bookseller but again, Mr. Brown of Oh, You Know By Now thinks this is a bit, so he's not intimidated.
"I was just absolutely hitting on him for real, unlike you," is what he basically told Crowley when explaining what they were chatting about.
And Crowley's like lol you got him flustered enough to host this meeting. Good on you, Mr. Whoever the Fuck You Are from Whatever Shop You Run. Look at you *go*. 😍 I've got a new favorite human, Aziraphale.
He's all "you astonish me" to Aziraphale, teasing him like you're leading the poor, balding bastard on, angel. I know it's hard for you to reign in your divine sex appeal but you should maybe try. His heart is only human, after all.
Mr. Brown still thinks Crowley's a sex worker though so he doesn't give up and is all like remember, Mr. Fell, our date is right after work on Thursday in a group setting to set you at ease but I'll see you first to set it all up because I want you and I want to make sure you know I'm not just here for the business meeting.
Crowley: That's it-- I'm adopting you, Ballsy Mr. Carpet. I like your style. But you'll never wear my angel down. We've been married for 6,000 years. I am definitely up for saving you from some demons on Thursday though and making it rain on you and literally any fruity, single shop owner in the greater metro area next season. You're on the deck after my shop lesbians. Now piss off, Mr. Barnes. We haven't been to the pub in ages and you're in my seat.
aziraphale recognizing sandalphon from sodom and gomorrah. crowley's coworker trying to out him with help from some nazis in 1941. aziraphale giving crowley the holy water in the same year gay sex was legalized in the UK. muriel being dressed as a cop when they came to monitor aziraphale and snoop about a lesbian romance and crowley asking if theyre interested in humans falling in love and saying he knows for some members of the police force thats a bit of a hobby
Crowley and Aziraphale being photographed when together without their knowledge or consent. Aziraphale assuming he’s going to hell for acting against the will of God. The externalized voice of Crowley’s psyche eternally being Freddy Mercury. The nightingale only sings when its song is sufficiently hidden. “We spend our existence pretending like we aren’t.”
i adore how this show recontextualizes the history and trauma of closeted queerness as a response to religious and carceral oppression within a narrative that allows it to celebrate queer joy rather than wallow in queer pain.
If it was just humans living their own human lives, we'd see all of these touches as reminder and reinforcement of our traumatic history and the story would be another sad rehash on the "isn't it hard for the gays/we found each other but it's hard to be together" trope.
Instead! All these signifiers of the state/church serve to remind us of the fallibility of systemic oppression and the necessity to find Another Way.
And that Other Way is to lean into the joy of human experience, in all its weird messiness! There's still plenty of angst within the central relationship, but the narrative assures us that we can trust it, that they will eventually find peace and joy with each other by changing things together.
The overall tone is therefore completely different because we're shown that the value of experiencing life and connection (human things!) is inherently valuable and in fact the Most Important Thing, the thing worth dismantling those oppressive systems for and indeed the only thing that can!
Broke: suffering is the lot of us queers but with enough determination we can find glimmers of happiness
Woke: queerness in it of itself is joy and although the wider world may want to bring us down this joy is our right
Bespoke: all of humanity is an allegory for the queer community, to be true to one’s self is to experience every joy that only a place as full of life and color as Earth can offer. Queerness may not be heavenly but it’s even better, it’s human incarnate.
This is Aziraphale. He like his personal space.
This is Crowley. He also likes Aziraphale's personal space.
Mr Anthony J. “I didn’t so much fall as sauntered vaguely downwards” Crowley. Mr Anthony Janthony “Look here, it's Lucifer and the guys” Crowley. Mr Anthony Jennifer “I wouldn’t worry though, how much trouble can I get into just for asking a few questions?” Crowley.
Seriously though, can we talk about how from the start Crowley had more hope for and faith in Heaven than Aziraphale ever did. The first time we see Aziraphale his naïveté has an air of touchy pragmatism to it already. While Crowley in fact had so much hope, he wouldn’t have imagined that questioning anything about Heaven could get him in trouble. Aziraphale knows. From the start Aziraphale knew and was doing a lot of heavy lifting to justify it to himself. But Crowley’s pure faith and hope made him admit it (almost), it always made him face the hypocrisy in heaven and subsequently himself…
Anyway! Prints of this piece are available on Redbubble. And full-size images are up on Patreon.
#The way they probably erased Crowley's memory of heaven. Also the way Crowley offered a hot chocolate to Gabriel just after even though he still hated him because he knew how it feels to remember nothing (insp from this post by @perpetualcontrolleddrowning)
Aziraphale and crowley are so character. Pretty much any way you turn them, it fits.
Asexual and in love? 100%. Lusting after each others' guts? Good lord Aziraphale looks at crowley like a tartalette on a plate. They are agender, they are all the genders simultaneously. Virginal Aziraphale whose ideal of a relationship is a chaste victorian novel? Near-cannon. Aziraphale who indulges in all pleasures of the body and by God has he spent some very very slutty p.B. (post-Bildad) years on earth?? I buy it. Crowley who actively chooses to express his hard-fought identity through his body and appearance also choosing to experiment sexually? Fits. Crowley who denies himself pleasures and only drinks hard alcohol and 6 espressos also keeps away from ever peeling off the 3 layers of black? Oh yeah. Demisexual crowley who only accepts touches from his only friend----???
They fucked at the Eastern gate----they have never kissed until their falling-out. So much packed into those human shaped beings I'm chewing glass

You are challenged by Battle Couple Aziraphale and Crowley!
I’ve been watching Good Omens for ’ll of about ten minutes and I have to say, I do like the poetry between hell’s most angelic demon and heaven’s most demonic angel coexisting
Through watching the rest of the show I went from “worst demon and worst angel- a demon that is too kind and an angel that is too hedonistic”, to “best demon and best angel- a demon so rebellious he can’t even cooperate with the rebellion and an angel so angelic he was ordered to love humanity and now refuses to stop”, and having finished, now, I’ve found myself resting on “two beings who are in fact very very human and love each other very much”
Yes this is exactly it
Aziraphale + book introduction
I wanna talk about The Angel Who Would Be Crowley.
Because I had a certain set of expectations, which got thoroughly trashed in the first five minutes of S2, and my genuine response is, "Oh, fuck, yup. You're right. That's WAY better."
Looking around at GO fandom, I'm not alone in this. So let's talk about it.
Basically, a lot of people (myself included) believed that he was a high-ranking angel, and therefore as chilly and remote as every other powerful angel we'd seen at that point. We pictured Crowley-To-Be as long-haired, regal and imposing --and the fanart at the time reflected this. I'd link some if Tumblr didn't hate links.
Something like this:
We were collectively drawing on a few things --mostly, Crawly's appearance and general bearing in the Biblical scenes of S1--
--But also scattered hints of his importance, backed up by conspicuous absences in Heaven and a few profound displays of power. That's all better covered elsewhere, so I won't reiterate the arguments here. All I'm saying is: I think our headcanons were justified.
But it turns out he was this:
!!!
With his curly little--!!
And his neat white--!!
IT TURNS OUT, he was an angel who squeaked and squealed when he was happy; who flailed his arms around and made explosion noises with his mouth to explain nebulas; who preened when told his stars were pretty. Furfur, who knew him before the Fall, says:
"You used to jump on me back, little monkey in a waistcoat..."
(The use of a diminutive there, 'little'...oh, that fascinates me.)
In a pretty huge subversion of expectations, we're given these glimpses of an angel who was sweet, and joyful, and heart-meltingly silly.
In sum...an innocent.
(Perhaps innocent to a troubling degree.
We see how he troubles Aziraphale, during their first conversation. He starts looking around and behind them, checking to make sure that no one can HEAR the blithe and reckless things coming out of this angel's mouth. This angel who talks like he's never been reprimanded in his life; like it's never occurred to him that anyone would want to hurt him.
Before the Beginning, Aziraphale understood Heaven better than he did. The danger is plainly occurring to Aziraphale.)
So now, we the viewers are in on a cruel joke that Aziraphale has known all along, which is that this --THIS-- is the angel who--
*checks notes*
--did a million lightyear freestyle dive into a boiling pool of sulphur. For asking questions.
...Imagine you are Aziraphale, and everything inside you wants to believe Heaven are the Good Guys, and God is Good and Everything She does is capital-R Right...and now try to reconcile that. Keep trying. I don't think he ever totally managed it in 6000 years.
All this gets further complicated when we learn that, despite all of the above, we were still right. That sweet excitable babby up there?
He WAS a powerful and high-ranking angel.
That much is explicitly confirmed, with significant evidence that he could have been among the mightiest of archangels...
...Who apparently accosted his fellow angels for piggyback rides. And was remembered millennia later by those (now fallen) angels as something 'little.'
What does that tell us about who he was? Is?
Hell, Aziraphale has known to be wary of the archangels (and the judgements of Heaven in general) since before the Fall even happened. He chooses to believe they are Good; he can't fool himself into thinking they are Safe.
Yet he's absolutely certain that Crowley won't hurt Job's children. Enough to stand in a burning building and say to them, "I can't save you, but don't be afraid. I won't need to."
And what reason does he give?
("I know you."
"You do not know me."
"I know the angel you were.")
What does that tell us about who he was? Is?
("The angel you knew is not me."
But how is Aziraphale supposed to believe that, when he can see him all the time?)
tl;dr --yes, this is better. I love the tragedy of it.
'Innocence died screaming' and all that.
