In ten recent coming-of-age films, Ella Kemp finds the genre thriving—and looking very different than the 1980s might have predicted. Film d

“My King!” – Chimes at Midnight (Falstaff) 1967
Going at Shakespeare is never a good idea for film reviewers, in my mind. The bard’s delivery has and always will be a stage-centric experience with the film versions going from fair to middling. Only a few reach dizzying heights. Chimes at Midnight succeeds at this endeavour, largely by failing as a film. I know, I know, I’m being deliberately vague. C’mon. Trailer and review after the break.

"You don't like her? That's too bad." - Marty (1955)
“You don’t like her? That’s too bad.” – Marty (1955)
I suppose you’ve never heard of Marty (1955) starring Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair? It’s OK if you haven’t, I hadn’t. But one evening I was watching it on late night TV and found myself until to stop watching. It’s a quiet, unassuming film, perfectly mirrored in its performances from Borgnine and Blair. But a better film about love will be hard to find.

I’ll keep this extraordinarily brief as I feel slightly unable to put into context what I saw last night to a packed audience in the Cineworld IMAX in Dublin.

"We don't leave Earth to be safe." | Alien: Covenant (2017)
From the moment Prometheus ended, I couldn’t digest it. There was something too Frankenstein-esque about how the story seemed to shoehorn and then outright bolt things on to get into the Alien universe so Ridley Scott had an excuse to do a sequel that got us closer to the first Alien film and its events. In essence, Prometheus is the film that nobody needed. So where does Alien: Covenant sit…

“It’s like lookin’ into a mirror!” | The Initiation (1984)
Dreams and nightmares are the fuel of most good horrors and thrillers. From antiquity to the modern novel and all the way through to cinema and videogames, it is a fertile ground to launch any kind of journey of uncertainty. In The Initiation, a dream is all main character Kelly Fairchild has to go on. Too bad someone is stalking her at the same time. Trailer (NSFW) and review after the jump.

“If I could go back to that day….” | Summertime (2015)
“If I could go back to that day….” | Summertime (2015)
Bittersweet love affairs on film rarely go well, it’s just their nature. In Summertime, Carole (Cécile de France) and Delphine (Izïa Higelin) find each other in a time of social upheaval in the France of 1971. Friends, to begin with, Delphine becomes attracted to Carole when she moves to Paris and joins Carole’s women’s rights group. At first unsure of the attraction, Carole throws herself…

"I promise, I can change for you!" | My Best Friend's Wedding (2016)
“I promise, I can change for you!” | My Best Friend’s Wedding (2016)
Chinese remakes of American films, especially romantic comedies, have not had a great trail run. Only You with Tang Wei and Liao Fan disappeared without a trace and even the great Andy Lou and Gong Li couldn’t stop What Women Want from just existing. We’re now in the third round and the champ’s not looking so good. So can the golden girl of Chinese cinema, Shu Qi, save the remake of 1997’s My…

"You are the bravest boy I've ever met." | Pete's Dragon (2016)
Disney continues their assault on our wallets, tilling their back catalogue of animated films and characters for live action fodder. So far, their efforts have been successful with Maleficent, Jungle Book and Cinderella scoring big. But how will they do with a remake of 1977’s Pete’s Dragon? Trailer and review after the break.

“That's... definitely bigger than the last one.” | ID4 Resurgence (2016)
“That's... definitely bigger than the last one.”
I knew that Independence Day: Resurgence was going to happen. One of the most iconic 90’s movie, an assured cast, good SFX, a captive US 4th July audience and a decent box office haul meant a sequel was going to happen. So here we all are twenty years later, ready for the follow up with new and old cast members together. Does it work? Was it worth the wait? Trailer and review after the break. (mor…

League of Gods ( 2016)
Well, it’s that time of the year when the Cineworld Dublin puts on the bulk of its Asian cinema releases. I caught Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid earlier but League of Godsflew by my site surfing and I decided to give it a whirl. CG, Jet Li, Tony Leung being evil, Fan Bingbing being eviler and a race to see how many special effects you can have on screen in a Chinese film. Trailer and review after…

The Swinging Cheerleaders (1974)
The Swinging Cheerleaders (1974)
I’m not sure what the point of the Swinging Cheerleaders is but I’m pretty sure it’s got something to do with the main character Kate learning to like being in an oppressive patriarchy and her new football jock beau, Buck, learning to not treat women like dirt. Oh, and there’s cheerleading going on in between. Review and trailer after the break.
