‘May all sentient beings attain diamond treasury hearts, which all diamond mountains cannot break; may all sentient beings attain diamond-realm hearts, adorned with the mystic swastika; may they attain unshakable hearts, attain hearts that cannot be frightened; may they attain ever inexhaustible hearts benefiting the world; may they attain hearts that are treasuries of knowledge and wisdom marked with great courage; may they attain hearts marked by firm strength; may they attain hearts which nothing can spoil; may they attain hearts destroying all delusive activities and armies of demons; may they attain fearless hearts; may they attain hearts of great spiritual force; may they attain hearts of constant energy; may they attain hearts of great courage; may they attain hearts that cannot be shocked; may they attain hearts with indestructible armor; may they attain the supreme hearts of bodhisattvas; may they attain hearts full of the light of enlightenment into the Buddha teachings; may they attain hearts sitting under the tree of enlightenment, abiding by the true teachings of all Buddhas, divorcing all illusions and attaining omniscience; may they attain hearts accomplished in the ten powers.’

This is the great bodisattva’s dedication of roots of goodness when giving their hearts, to cause all sentient beings to be unstained by the world and to be endowed with the ten-powered mind of the enlightened.

Absent minded

Questioner: Some people are very absent-minded and they seem to be in another world. Are they meditating all the time?

Sri Chinmoy: No. Absent-mindedness has nothing to do with the spiritual life. It is a Himalayan mistake to think that absent-mindedness is due to aspiration. Many absent-minded people, of course, are not even aspiring. And those absent-minded people who are aspiring are not absent-minded because of their meditation. They may seem to be in another world because they neglect their duties, but they are not actually staying in a higher consciousness. In the spiritual life it is very important that we live in the outer world and do our best in the outer world. We should look upon the world and humanity as our very own. To allow ourselves to he absent-minded is to be rude and inconsiderate of others.

There are some spiritual Masters and very advanced seekers who appear to be absent-minded and forgetful at times. But with them, it is a different story. At that time their consciousness is not in the physical. They are on a very high plane. Again, a few — very few — Masters can remain on this high plane and still function normally in the world.

But in the case of a beginner, a spiritual seeker, absent-mindedness is not aiding him in his spiritual journey. It is not a positive expression of his aspiration; it is a hindrance, an obstruction. He is running towards his Goal with a heavy load on his shoulders. After a few years, when he has made more progress, the seeker will realise that he is carrying this burden. He will feel that he cannot go any farther while carrying it, and his progress will come to a standstill. At that time the seeker makes every effort to transform his weakness, and finally sheds his heavy load so that he can continue towards his destination.

What do Reform Jews belleve about Homosexuality?

The Reform Movement understand that every human being is born with a specific sexual and romantic identity– some straight, some bisexual, some gay etc. They do not believe that one’s sexual or romantic identity makes them sinful or that it is a challenge– but is just another beautiful aspect of them as a human being. Reform Jews believe that every human being is created in the Divine Image (Gen 1:26), and thus that everyone should treat each other with love and respect in the way in which only God should be treated.

Rabbi Akiva went as far to say that we should bless humankind because we are God-like. (Pirkei Avot 3:14). Although several texts point to same-sex acts as taboo, Progressive Jewry understand that these texts were written a long time ago for a very specific reason– and that reason is not to marginalize any specific group. Nor would any loving God support the marginalization of God’s children.

As Jews, we are commanded time and time again to lead of life of justice one filled with acts of G'milut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and Tikkun Olam (the fixing of the world) through helping those who are oppressed as “we were slaves in the land of Egypt and God redeemed us” (Deut 15:15) Every time we sleep in a Sukkah, recite the Mi Chamocha, or celebrate our redemption during Pesach, we are reminded of the importance of freedom and our job as Jews to help others who are oppressed.

Reform Jews support full marriage equality for same sex couples and full inclusion into the Jewish world and secular communities as well as fighting to help transgender people and help stop hate crimes against all marginalized people.
