I realise that to a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and to a person mourning the vaporisation of Aziraphale and Crowley, everything looks like Good Omens but…
Sometimes I think I might be getting over GO3 and then I realise we could and should all have been reblogging gifsets after gifsets of 1941 part 3 for weeks after the release or something and I get mad all over again. Oh I'm still so sick.
More of this because it may be my favourite thing I made so far 💔
honestly, the revelation that the finale was the work of that evil man NG and his stupid-ass horror pals is enough to make it non-canon forever imo. what I mean by that is, the story they shat out is illegitimate: in authorship, in heart, in the story's operative logic.
we anticipated closure from Good Omens 3, and a lot of that was contingent on the fact that NG would not be involved. this is how the finale was billed to fans, by production. instead, a lot of us got a bad shock from the opening credits, and a whole lot of bafflement for ninety minutes to follow.
I think what has me really heartsick--what made the spurious finale hurt so bad--is that it was imposed upon Michael and David. they illuminated Crowley and Aziraphale with every micro-expression through every minute of S1 and S2. seeing them mush through soulless writing hurt.
if NG had published the finale as a follow-up novel, as he'd hinted for a time, it would have been a lot easier to chuck the whole thing in the trash compactor. but because Michael and David became the characters, it's harder to disentangle my emotions.
Fuck, there are two things I genuinely do not understand.
How did we not notice from the very beginning that Aziraphale does NOT believe he can actually change anything in Heaven? Because if he did, he would’ve agreed the moment the Metatron made the offer. The Metatron would not have needed to keep pressuring him, bringing up the fact that he had “watched” him, that he knew about his collaboration with Crowley — something that could clearly be used as leverage against both of them. Aziraphale doesn’t even consider proposing himself for the position for a single second.
How did the WRITERS not understand this?
Just pause at the moment where the Metatron starts going on about how Aziraphale is such an amazing leader and how he should be in charge of projects of unimaginable scale. There is no joy or excitement in Aziraphale’s eyes at the possibility of changing Heaven. He is TERRIFIED. He is panicking. No one has put a gun to his head yet, but he can already see it being loaded.
He immediately tries to pull away, to step back. He says he doesn’t want to return to Heaven. He starts talking about “where would I even get my coffee?” (And honestly, coffee here may symbolize freedom = Crowley, especially remembering the beginning of season 2, where Crowley is the one ordering it for himself.) He literally swallows hard, like there’s a lump in his throat. He glances away for a second.
And when the Metatron mentions that he reviewed Aziraphale’s “past exploits,” thanks to Michael Sheen, the absolute master of micro-expressions, you can actually see the corner of Aziraphale’s mouth twitch downward slightly, his gaze growing even more strained, his eyebrows pulling tighter together. The second the Metatron starts talking about knowing that Aziraphale worked with Crowley, Aziraphale’s eyes start darting around.
He presses his lips together. His jaw shifts forward, exactly like during his argument with Crowley at the beginning of season 2 and in the end of season 2 after the kiss, which signals tension. He completely curls into himself.
((I’ll continue my thoughts in reblogs since Tumblr doesn’t allow me to insert more than 10 images.)

The End / The Beginning
GOs3 and the glass cliff
There's a horribly sexist thing a lot of organizations do, and that's put a woman in charge of something everybody knows is going to be a dumpster fire. Heads the org wins, tails the woman loses; if she manages to turn it around everybody smells of roses and inclusivity, but if she doesn't, oh well, it's only a woman who takes all the flak and whose career gets tanked.
It's called the "glass cliff," and I think it may have been done to Rachel Talalay. Douglas MacKinnon is not to blame, if so; he had every right to up stakes and walk away. No, I am directing a laser glare right at Amazon HQ, with a small amount of secondary WTF at Rob and Rhianna.
Will everyone still directing ire at Talalay please stop. She got handed a shit sandwich of a script and did her best with it.
You guys don’t talk about my favorite detective Monk enough and it’s sickening

Jesus should have appeared when Aziraphale summoned God with the New Book of Life.
He's God, isn't he? Part of the "triune godhead." Then we could have gotten a completely different version of the scene in the bookshop, one where Jesus defends the world he knows and the people he's met and the things he learned (in his short time back on Earth) about love and generosity and helping people become better people.
Maybe Aziraphale and Crowley ask him to create a world without angels and demons. Maybe he says, but aren't they people too? Can't they learn about love, and generosity, and helping people become better people? Of course they can. Look at the two of you.
And we could have gotten a beautiful mirror to the end of Season 1, where Christ does the same exact thing as the Antichrist, where he doesn't destroy the world but puts it back just the way it was. Even slightly better.
Because angels and demons should have a chance, too.
it's not a personal attack if someone else liked Good Omens 3.
I liked Good Omens 3.
you are allowed to feel any way you like about it.
Aziraphale is disappointed in every single one of you who hurt Rachel Talalay though. consider managing your big feelings better than that.
Having looked through a lot of the discourse now it seems many of the arguments on whether or not the New Final 15 was "good" have to do with whether or not someone thinks a "soul" is what makes a person who they are, or if it's their memories and lived experiences. And I'm finding it fascinating actually
Well, since we had an entire season dedicated to the question of what losing memories does to a person, establishing that Gabriel and Jim were indeed different people and therefore couldn't be considered the same person and Jim couldn't be held responsible for Gabriel's actions (hence why Crowley couldn't, in the end, let him jump off the window), I would go for the second option. Memories, experiences, trauma, all of that makes the self. And that's why Anthony and Asa couldn't ever be Aziraphale and Crowley, and why I feel robbed by the finale. As for the finding each other in every universe trope, they already had that. That was the point of Aziraphale and Crowley originally. They met against all odds through the literal History of the world each and every time and held on to that. No one deserved a precious, peaceful, not-so-fragile existence anymore more than they did.
That was what made them so beautifully captivating. They kept finding each other, but it wasn't doomed lovers with the tragedy of death in between each encounter. It was always Them. In every meeting. Richer and richer of experiences and emotions and intrigue and love for each other. All that has now been lost to a bland, trite, fanfictiony ending that we didn't need because we already have fanfiction for that.
