Hellehello I jsut wanted to say I'm rlly happy that ur in the from fandom, ur like my fav from artist (and let's be honest probably the ONLY from artist out there) uhm uh any predictions for the next ep?
Why thank you! I have a feeling that suspicions will begin to arise about āSophiaā. I think Victor will be the one to discover this, and thereāll be some tension between him and Henry. I think (hope) weāll hear more about Fatimaās golem.
I honestly really love the golem as a plot point. Itās a really interesting metaphor, so Iām going to post my very shoddy, disjointed analysis. Iām not very eloquent right now, Iām very sleep deprived, so I apologize lol.
Metaphorically, I think it symbolizes the fight back against oppression (specifically sexual and religious/racial) and the stripping of bodily autonomy.
At the start of the show, Fatima is a glue for her community. Sheās warm, supportive, endlessly optimistic, she symbolizes the strength of community in the wake of death, hurt and oppression. Howeverā¦. the township takes this from her. It wears her down and takes her joy from her. It perverts her marriage to Ellis, where she blames herself and fears herself for what she beluieved was the child of her and Ellis. (I think is a very strong theme of sexual abuse here⦠I mean, thatās a given with themes of bodily autonomy, particularly so with a parasitic, unwanted pregnancy. The pain and the fear of abuse and rape bleeds into the relationships that would otherwise serve to strengthen and comfort her.)
The Creatures (also conveniently looking like 1950s traditional white american nuclear archetypes with these creepy vapid grins) want to change Fatima and beat her down into submission. She is angry, hurt, she yells at them to āstop fucking smilingā and they taunt her: āYouāll feel better if you come outside!ā IE Capitulate to our will, your anger is amusing and futile, submit to us, feel afraid.
She is used by the evil of Fromville as an incubator for a āchildā she didnāt want, and isolated from those closest to her - psychologically, as her suffering is overlooked and her pleas are not heard, and then physically, where she is literally locked away and forced to feed the child. Once Smiley is reborn, sheās tossed to the wayside, irrevocably changed, traumatized and full of anger.
With this anger and hurt, she makes the Golem. In the Golem of Prague folktale, the golem is a protector of Jewish communities from pogroms and antisemitic violence. It is a protector of the oppressed, turning the violence back onto the oppressor. With Fatimaās golem, it is the protector of the entrapped people in From, a beacon of hope and strength, and an act of autonomy and rebellion for Fatima. Rebellion canāt occur without might, resolute, and violence, and the township pushed her to this point. Itās sort of like a big middle finger to those who hurt her. The Creatures may think theyāve beaten her into submission, but they havenāt. Itās her fighting back, to break out of the twisted cycle.
These themes tie into Fatimaās backstory. Her father was killed due to religious persecution, and he was the one who taught her about other beliefs, including the story of the Golem. Her Golem is resistance against what killed her father, to what has killed those she loves and what has hurt her, taunted her and fed on her physically, spiritually and emotionally.
I really enjoy the dichotomy of human connection, resilience and community with hurt, cycles of trauma and violence in FROM. Itās a very primally human show, I feel.
However, weāll have to see how this golem plot point plays out. What also happens in the Golem of Prague is that it goes on a rampage after Rabbi Loew forgets to deactivate it during Sabbath and has to be destroyed, and Iām wondering if something narratively similar might occur with Fatimaās golem. I do hope the golem comes to life though, or has some kind of supernatural power (which I believe is implied. Itās FROM, after all). The townsfolk need hope. It could be an interesting counter to Sophia/MIYās scheming. (Itās also tangentially relevant to my argument that Sophia is an evil being masquerading as an āinnocentā christian girl, ie, evil and oppression hiding in the coat of what is seen as righteous and gentle. There are some very interesting religious themes throughout FROM!)
