Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*

That scene was so agonizing to read, everybody but Severus was throwing arguments practically engineered to trigger reactance in him, disrespect him, and make it so if he gave in he would feel bullied and defeated in doing so.

Nobody present valued Sirius' life enough to pay a hint of tact for it, Sirius included.

the fact that Dumbledore took the cloak from James, then later gave it to Harry in his first year, so... through all that time it was with him, and... do you think Dumbledore ever mentioned it to Severus? or did he only find out about it at the end of PoA?

because it was kind of a pretty significant thing for him, since, well, 100% during his time at school there must have been a million moments when he thought that... he felt some kind of presence somewhere but just couldn’t see anyone. when the Marauders knew things they shouldn’t have known. possibly when he was hexed from some random spot and had no idea where it came from or who did it.... well, he probably guessed Who, he just didn’t understand how or where from.

i think if this knowledge had come out at the end of PoA, it would have been very, very stressful for him.

Well, honestly, I think he had absolutely no idea, because if he had known, he would’ve caught on to Harry using the Cloak way earlier in Philosopher’s Stone. I don’t think he knew. I don’t think he had a fucking clue. Dumbledore didn’t tell him.

And maybe he didn’t tell him because he didn’t want to add more fuel to the fire, thinking that if he explained it, Severus would resent the kid even more. Like: “Oh, right, so this was the reason? And on top of being cowards who were incapable of attacking me one by one, who had to gang up on me when I was alone because they knew they couldn’t take me otherwise, they were hiding too?”

I mean, honestly, I find it incredible that J.K. Rowling genuinely tries to convince us that those four were Gryffindors because people who are incapable of doing their shitty things alone and need to hide under a magical object that makes them invisible so they can attack people and play pranks… I mean, to me they’re the absolute peak of having no balls. I swear someone should’ve smacked each of them round the head and said: “You’re all idiots. And your balls never dropped as babies, apparently.”

But anyway, I don’t think he told him. I think maybe consciously he didn’t tell him for the reasons I mentioned at the start, not wanting to stir things up further or reopen wounds. But I also don’t think he gave much of a shit in another sense. And I’m not saying that to defend Dumbledore. I think because he never really saw that bullying as serious, never truly considered it bullying at all, he probably just saw it as kids being kids, and his golden boys couldn’t possibly be actual abusers.

Because in the end we have to understand that admitting his precious boys were bullies would’ve meant admitting that he himself had been negligent, that he had been prejudiced, and that he’d failed not only Severus but a whole group of children he’d essentially abandoned and left to fend for themselves, thinking: whatever happens to them happens, I’m not dealing with it. If they have problems, I’ll wash my hands of it. He would’ve had to admit that to himself.

And Dumbledore is someone with a huge ego. His whole self-image is built around the idea of having sacrificed what he wanted most for the greater good, right? He suppresses and represses everything he feels in favour of what’s supposedly right. So I think his entire image of himself is built around that idea: I did this, therefore this ideal stands above me. So admitting that he’s still prejudiced, still negligent, and that he contributed to the abuse, marginalisation and radicalisation of a lot of children would crack that spotless image he has of himself. So he would never do it.

But genuinely, I don’t think he did tell him. Consciously, because of the reasons I mentioned at the beginning, not wanting to make things worse. And unconsciously, because underneath it all, telling him would mean admitting a mistake, admitting a mistake would mean admitting he’s a piece of shit, and admitting that would mean accepting that all the things he believes he sacrificed and abandoned for some greater purpose didn’t magically make him a better person, because he’d still have a lot to unpack and confront within himself.

And an ego like his —especially in a man, and especially in an older man— can’t handle that, because that’s just how men are.

but, like... in my view of Dumbledore [ not saying it’s the correct one, it’s just my perception of the character ] he actually understands what it leads to, but he’s constantly weighing the risks and doing things for the Greater Good.

he has, like, too big a picture in mind, and he really neglects certain specific things because..

well, for example, he turned a blind eye to everything that was happening with Harry.

i can’t say that The Boy had, like, a particularly good childhood or anything, but from Dumbledore’s perspective, it was simply necessary.

when he shut Severus up, it was for the Greater Good, because otherwise the truth about Remus would have come out, and he would have had to deal with the Blacks as well, which was also... a bad option.

for some Greater Good, it had to happen exactly that way.

and so, even though i think he understands all of this, his thinking just works through a huge, like, much broader picture, ignoring the smaller scale implications. idk .. i see him as quite cynical in that respect

he sees a lot of things as something necessary or insignificant in the overall game.

i might be projecting, because i know at least two men like this who are..., in a way, managers and who basically gather talented people under them.

and they’re incredibly empathetic, charismatic and all that. but i can’t say that they don’t understand what exatly they’re doing. neither can i say they genuinely think that their approach is extremely empathetic unbiased and honest.

no, they’re just, well... honestly speaking, they show empathy when it benefits them. when they need it.

and in my view, Dumbledore is roughly from the same category.

I really do think he's playing a magical game here, just deliberately letting a lot of stuff happen within a directive that it will all work out, like he's set, in spellwork, a specific goal or goals (the defeat of Voldemort; the survival of all students while at Hogwarts), and letting the magic have free rein in figuring out how to make that happen.

I think it's something related in concept to Felix Felicis, which makes things happen that are lucky for the person taking it, and something related to Voldemort's curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts position, which makes use of circumstance and the DADA professor's own personal flaws to make something happen such that the teacher cannot continue the following year, and something related to Lily's death-induced sacrificial magic protections on Harry, which took Voldemort at his word when he offered her her life in exchange for Harry's life, accepted it back (took it) while she was offering it to him in exchange for Harry's life, and then tried to take Harry's life anyway.

I think this is in play when a number of coincidences enables Harry to piece together the situation with Quirrell and the Philosopher's Stone, and when a number of coincidences allow multiple people to avoid fatal basilisk encounters via statistically-unlikely direct-gaze-breakers, and when a spectacular array of coincidences line up to let Harry and Hermione rescue Sirius and Buckbeak.

I think he kicks it into a higher gear once the war takes off in earnest, to the point of actually removing himself from the situation via his own death, to make shit happen, however it wants to, to lead to a favorable result.

Before that, however, I think he had a running tally of who-deserves-what, and an understanding of who was doing what, and what their motivations were, and what could be done with them, including making them "overpay" so that they could later collect what was due to them when it was most inconvenient for his enemies.

For example: he had in fact used Severus rather badly, forcing him to accept the pardoning and continued presence of his persecutors, who had nearly gotten him killed, so as to protect said persecutors from worse consequences; this actively pushed Severus into the Death Eaters and Dumbledore knows it, and Dumbledore also knows that the Death Eaters will serve Severus poorly, being such a danger to something he values, but he wasn't able, or willing, to make Severus a priority at the expense of James, Sirius, and Remus.

So when Severus comes to him with the news of Voldemort targeting the Potters and a plea for safety for Lily, which fully aligns with Dumbledore's purposes to provide (for fuck's sake, they're his allies), Dumbledore arguably owes him to grant this, several times over.

But he doesn't. He haggles, demands more from Severus, a shift of loyalty and employment at Hogwarts and service as a spy---and he goads Severus into asking for more besides, things Severus doesn't value in their own right---and then he deliberately doesn't protect Lily to the full extent he could, he lets that confrontation happen (no insistence on being secret-keeper; borrowing the invisibility cloak) and then presents Harry's survival as his "payment" to Severus (Severus having been sort of morally steamrolled into asking for that) and demands yet more payment from Severus: protecting Harry.

With Harry himself, we see the same thing: Dumbledore drops him off with the Dursleys, people well known for hating magic, and guilts them into keeping him, and makes no provision for enforcing good treatment of him. The result: Harry spends his childhood paying, in suffering and neglect and occasionally blood, to maintain that sacrificial protection that his mother already paid for.

That is, Dumbledore arranges for Harry to overpay.

Just as he arranges for Severus to overpay.

And he might or might not have overpaid himself, putting his own death into the pot.

The result? When it comes time for the debts to come due, Harry and Severus are both owed a great deal. And Voldemort, as is his wont, has spent the whole time making promises he never intended to keep, and betraying his own followers left and right, and taking and taking and taking from the magical community as a whole.

He's overextended.

He's as vulnerable as Dumbledore could dream of to the circumstances as they happen. Harry and Severus and Dumbledore have made their sacrifices in order to safeguard their charges, have devoted their lives to this purpose.

They are owed the defeat of Voldemort, and Voldemort is caught in the unweaving of his ambitious, but ultimately brittle, attempt at perfectly-failsafed immortality.

And down he goes. Largely, but not entirely, because Dumbledore had his finger on the pulse of every major player in the game, and had been arranging them, with an assist from magic developed to purpose, for that effect.

Abandoning Severus to the Dark in favor of Sirius and James and Remus allowed Albus to fish him back after he offered Voldemort genuine loyalty: Voldemort could via legilimency sniff out any fake follower, but could not possibly suspect that Severus would join forces with the hated James Potter; would absolutely inhale the idea of Dumbledore being fed a tale of regret and remorse that would satisfy his "people are inherently good" delusion; would be utterly incapable of foreseeing a betrayal that took the form of someone willingly dying.

And so he died, wrapped in traps he never suspected he was helping to wind and set himself. All because Albus Dumbledore knew his magic and knew his people and used both like the master he was.

Do you ever think about the fact that Sirius wanted to die for James? He wanted to be the Potters' secret keeper. He knew what would happen if he was and Voldemort found him. He INTENDED to die for James and his family. Sirius saw no future for himself. His happy ending was dying for James and Lily and Harry, granting them safety, and he was robbed even of that.

I don't know for sure that he saw no future for himself, but the prospect of a heroic and valiant and purposeful death in service to the person who held his greatest loyalty would have been a perfectly acceptable outcome for him, and he may have also been delighted to terminate the bloodline and name his family valued so highly.

I could see him looking forward to a lifetime of shenanigans and sleeping around and generally watching the world fall over themselves for him, ending up as an old man doing Last of the Summer Wine style shenanigans with his friends and playing beneficent uncle and great-uncle to a whole horde of Potter children and grandchildren, maybe adding a few half-bloods to the swarm himself.

But absolutely he couldn't have seen a future for himself without James, and probably James' kid was added to the mix the first time he set eyes on him.

Hi, do you think that Harry's personality was altered to fit with Ginny's in HBP? I can put my money on the fact that the Harry Potter from OotP would not put up with any of Ginny's bullshit. He wouldn't even talk to her if he could help it let alone date her.

If jkr wasn't on her trojan horse to make hinny endgame, Harry probably would not date anybody in sixth year. Not with Sirius's death, voldemort's horcruxes, his disastrous relationship (really, it's a stretch) with Cho the previous year and his new found obsession with Malfoy. His brain could only hold so much.

Hi, like, Harry's personality definitely changed in HBP, but I don't think Ginny was the only reason (Ginny's personality also changed from OotP, for the worse if you ask me). Harry's personality change between OotP and HBP isn't all that bad. Last time I read the book, a lot of it can be explained by his trauma response (his sass and even less self-preservation than before).

What is a little odd about HBP Harry is that he is way calmer than OotP Harry and tries harder not to annoy Ginny, even early in the book, before he supposedly realises his crush. Which is in stark contrast to Harry with anybody else and in any other book. Harry isn't scared of calling out people for bad behaviour, even people he likes (Lupin, Ron, Hermione, etc.), and who is outright rude to Ginny late in OotP. Basically, the transitions in Harry's opinions and behaviour towards Ginny didn't change naturally and go against how he usually reacts to people. Because you're right that OotP Harry would not try to appease Ginny when she gets all worked up over Fluer, he wouldn't care what she thought, and we don't see the summer between OotP and HBP when he supposedly changed his whole treatment of Ginny — which is a problem.

As for whether he'd date at all after Sirius' death... it can go both ways. I actually think it's very possible Harry throws himself into a relationship with Ginny — who he sees as a normal and safe dating option, she represents normal teenage life, and not being the Boy Who Lived — because of his trauma and Sirius' death and everything going on with Voldemort.

I mean, we are told pretty explicitly he sees his time with Ginny as a break of normalcy from his eventful life. It's a distraction and a coping mechanism:

“It’s been like . . . like something out of someone else’s life, these last few weeks with you,” said Harry. “But I can’t . . . we can’t . . . I’ve got things to do alone now.”

(HBP, Ch30)

So, I don't think that's inherently out of character, actually. What is, is Harry thinking he loves Ginny as much as he does, without knowing her and being chill with a lot of her behaviour he would have called her out for before:

“She’s a damn sight nicer than Phlegm,’’ said Ginny “And she’s more intelligent, she’s an Auror!” said Hermione from the corner. “Fleur’s not stupid, she was good enough to enter the Triwizard Tournament,” said Harry. “Not you as well!” said Hermione bitterly. “I suppose you like the way Phlegm says ‘ ’Arry,’ do you?” asked Ginny scornfully. “No,” said Harry, wishing he hadn’t spoken, “I was just saying, Phlegm — I mean, Fleur —” [...] “I wouldn’t go in the kitchen just now,” she warned him. “There’s a lot of Phlegm around.” “I’ll be careful not to slip in it.” Harry smiled

(HBP, Ch5)

First, Hermione and Ginny should lay off Fleur. Second, how come Harry finds Ginny's comments about Fleur funny after he just spoke in Fleur's defence? Why is he regretting having talked? He doesn't regret it when he speaks up to defend people he cares about or to say what people need to hear when it's the truth, even in HBP and DH. Ginny is the only exception, and we don't see what made her that exception in the books. Especially when Harry repeatedly shows he cares for Ron and Hermione more than her.

“And Ginny, don’t call Ron a prat, you’re not the Captain of this team —” “Well, you seemed too busy to call him a prat and I thought someone should —” Harry forced himself not to laugh.

(HBP, Ch14)

You're telling me Harry would find this behaviour funny, JKR? He would if he didn't like Ron, sure, but Ron is one of his most important people, more important to him than Ginny (as proven time and time again in DH), and he knows Ron's insecure enough as is. Harry would not stand for the Ron slander, even if it's from his sister.

Harry looked over at Ron, who was hunched in a corner, staring at his knees, a bottle of butterbeer clutched in his hand. “Angelina still won’t let him resign,” Ginny said, as though reading Harry’s mind. “She says she knows he’s got it in him.” Harry liked Angelina for the faith she was showing in Ron, but at the same time thought it would really be kinder to let him leave the team.

(OotP, Ch26) - Harry likes when people show faith in Ron's abilities! Wild that he's a good friend!

For context, Harry to Ginny in OotP when he's stressed over Sirius and annoyed with her:

“Hi,” said Ginny uncertainly. “We recognized Harry’s voice — what are you yelling about?” “Never you mind,” said Harry roughly. Ginny raised her eyebrows. “There’s no need to take that tone with me,” she said coolly. “I was only wondering whether I could help.” “Well, you can’t,” said Harry shortly.

(OotP, Ch32)

But I wouldn't say Harry won't talk to her if he could help it. He likes Ginny in OotP but not more than Fred and George. He finds some of her comments amusing and thinks she's alright. He doesn't hate her, far from it — but he doesn't see her as a romantic interest, he sees her as Ron's little sister. He's actively surprised she has any interest or talent in Quidditch and finds it unlikely. OotP Harry doesn't think very highly of Ginny, nor is he super interested in her as a person:

“You and Fred and George,” she said impatiently. “We’ve got an- other Seeker!” “Who?” said Harry quickly. “Ginny Weasley,” said Katie. Harry gaped at her. “Yeah, I know,” said Angelina, pulling out her wand and flexing her arm. “But she’s pretty good, actually. Nothing on you, of course,” she said, throwing him a very dirty look

(OotP, Ch21)

“Well, that was a bit stupid of you,” said Ginny angrily, “seeing as you don’t know anyone but me who’s been possessed by You-Know-Who, and I can tell you how it feels.” Harry remained quite still as the impact of these words hit him. Then he turned on the spot to face her. “I forgot,” he said. “Lucky you,” said Ginny coolly. “I’m sorry,” Harry said, and he meant it. “So . . . so do you think I’m being possessed, then?”

(OotP, Ch23)

And even the "best" hinny scene in OotP in the library (in quotations because that scene is really weird), Harry isn't really telling Ginny what's bothering him. He tells her he wants to talk to Sirius, but not why (Which is his doubts about James and what he saw in Snape's worst memory. He doesn't tell Ron and Hermione about it either, but it is an example of him not being more open with her than with Ron and Hermione. He isn't).

It's not all out of character in HBP, and Harry could get to a point where he treats Ginny and her comments the way he does, there's just nothing that happens in the books that justifies it — hence why it's so jarring. We didn't see Harry's emotions evolve to this point; they just sorta appear, and are really weird when they are there (god, I hate the chest monster).

Interestingly enough, Ginny's flat-out wrong on a key aspect of the possession situation: she's got experience with ONE kind of possession, manifested by Tom sort of shunting her out of the way and piloting her body while she's "absent," resulting in her waking up covered in blood and feathers with no memory of what she was up to.

Harry's type of possession involves the feeling of intense emotions that are clearly not his own, and dreams in which he experiences going somewhere passively as if seeing through someone else's eyes, complete with feelings of anticipation that he has a much harder time differentiating himself from.

It's an utterly different form of possession, and Harry is equipped to know already that there IS more than one type of possession, because Quirrel's experience with Voldemort is yet a third type, that of somebody hitching a ride in your body, and sometimes taking control of it with your full knowledge and (more or less) cooperation.

Her assertion that "then You-Know-Who hasn't ever possessed you" or whatever it was (can't recall exact text, potter-search isn't working for me at the moment) is flat-out wrong, and Harry definitely has the context to figure this out in the moment.

(Technically, the Imperius Curse could also count, especially if Harry's experience of perceiving the actual commands is a common situation. I would honestly imagine it isn't, as otherwise anybody released from the Imperius Curse could subsequently recall their instructions and that would give the game away. In which case their experience of it might be more like Ginny's, with empty places in their memory, or it might take place entirely beneath their conscious notice and they tend to dismiss any memories of the actions taken as normal, the way you would with actions you don't find very significant, with "steal something from work" forcibly misfiled in your brain alongside "going to the bathroom" and shunted well away from any inclination to look at it and think, "that doesn't sound like something I'd do. Why did I do that?" and so it gets obscured.)

It doesn't occur until later, but Harry's actual, blatant possession by Voldemort in the fight in the Department of Mysteries is also very solidly not like Ginny's possession.
