I think this episode did a good job showing how joel sheltered ellie sometimes too much and imo re-contextualizes current ellie’s weaknesses. in the 16th bday flashback he tells her he doesn’t want her going on patrols yet so that she can enjoy being a kid. we see on her 17th birthday that he struggles with the idea if her growing up (and growing away from him) and ellie is becoming fed up with his overprotectiveness. she even tells him: you don’t own this house, you don’t own anything (including her). he didn’t let her go on patrol until she was 19. up until a year ago, she basically was just living a normal life in jackson (or as close to normal as can be). not dealing with infected or outside threats at all. even when shes on patrol with joel and they hear about eugene, joel tells her to go back. I think this perfectly ties into ellie maybe seeming “incompetent” at times in seattle. she seems out of her element because she IS out of her element. joel did not want her to have to deal with these dangers and as a result shes not fully equipped to deal with the level of threats her and dina are facing
I was just thinking about this yesterday, anon!!
In the games, Ellie is already on patrols at 16. Jesse even talks to Joel to tell him how he thinks she's ready to graduate from group to partner patrols. And though Joel thinks she's still a bit young, he recognises that this is what she wants and lets her do it under the condition that she stick to shorter routes.
Ellie has only been doing patrols for 9 months before Joel dies in the show. He waits until she is 19 to let her go on any patrols at all.
It's an interesting change. One that, like you said, makes her seem like she doesn't know what she's doing all the time in Seattle. It also makes the reasons for Jesse's anger much clearer, and really hilights the recklessness of what Ellie is doing-- because she doesn't have years of patrol experience like the others. She's not incapable of fighting or holding her own, but it's not a skill of hers that she's been allowed to refine in real life circumstances.
She can shoot infected from miles away with Tommy and fight Caleb in the barn as much as she likes, but that's not the same as hundrends of soldiers with guns, seraphites with an elaborate and dangerous communication system, and infected that she's never seen before in her entire life.
Joel's over-protectiveness has done a lot of harm to his relationship with Ellie, and also her preparedness for things that will inevitably happen to her.
He says that he won't let her go on patrols because he wants her to enjoy being a kid, but seems to have forgotten that even though they're in a community that mimics the times before, being a kid nowadays is a completely different experience to how it was in 2003.
Kids in Jackson are getting put on patrol as young as 16. They're being taught safety drills for if raiders or infected infiltrate the town. Some of these kids, like Dina, have had guns in their hands and experienced unimaginable loss all before they were 10 years old.
Being a kid doesn't mean what it did before the outbreak, and it certainly doesn't mean that to Ellie Williams of all people.
She had the weight of the world put on her shoulders at 14. She's been alone her entire life. Everyone she has loved has either died or left her.
Being a kid sucked for Ellie. The 'good old days' that Joel talks about were unbelievably traumatic for her. And now she's in Jackson where yes, it's safe for her here and she is living in an abundance of things she's never had before-- but that doesn't mean that the last 15 years of her life never happened.
And as much as Joel wants to play house, wants to have a normal father-daughter relationship with Ellie, he forgets that this is not his kid. They love eachother as if she is, but she's not. I'm sure there's some form of guardianship system in Jackson, but that is nowhere near the same as a legal adoption or something pre-outbreak. The foundation of their relationship is built on trust and trauma, and it cracks every time Joel messes up and lies to her.
To Joel, daughters have an expiry. He never got to see Sarah grow up, and the moment he broke down his walls and let Ellie in, she was going to be murdered. It makes sense that he would be protective, that he would shelter Ellie, want her to be safe. He misses when he was her protector, and the older she gets and surpasses Sarah in age, the more scared he probably is that he'll lose her.
But in his attempts at trying to keep her around, he just ended up doing the opposite.
And now Ellie is stuck with the consequences of that.

You should be able to rot in bed for 2, maybe 3 hours after waking up before it starts affecting what time it is. If I wake up at 8:30 and lie in bed for 2hr it should still be 8:30 when I get up
hey so it’s march now aka the beginning of endometriosis awareness month and i feel obligated to remind you that debilitatingly painful periods are not normal. if you or someone you know is ending up sick or bedridden every month, you are not crazy and deserve medical attention from someone who will take you seriously
hey it’s march again let’s get this post circulating again
so much rage for anyone who tells the story of the radium girls like “ohoho weren’t people in the 20s fucking stupid” and not like “corporate greed has always cost people’s lives and health”
History Lesson:
The Radium Girls were factory workers who painted glowing markers on watches. They pointed their paint brushes with their lips after being told do so and that it was safe for them to do so by their managers. The paint had radium in it to promote the glow.
Dentists became the first people aware of the medical complications happening amongst all the women working in this factory. Complaints of loose bones, teeth, ulcers, etc. began to circulate amongst the staff.
Eventually, the girls started to die. The first one’s jaw literally came off her skull before her death as a result of radiation poisoning.
Perhaps all of that you could say was “stupidity” on behalf of the workers and corporation.
But what came next wasn’t. The corporation, the U.S. Radium Corporation, originally called the Radium Luminous Material Corporation, lied to the public and said that their workers were dying from alternate causes such as syphilis. They continued to instruct their staff to work business as usual, perpetuating more deaths and illness amongst their staff so their product could continue to be made.
The Radium Corp offered to change the method of painting dials, but the alternative brushes slowed down work and they were paid by the dial. To continue earning the wages they needed, the girls were forced to continue to use the brushes that they had to wet with their mouths.
The girls eventually took the matter to court. They took it to court eight times because Radium Corp continued to appeal until 1939.
As a result of their win, which provided a settlement to each girl a lump sum, a yearly stipend, and medical expensed paid by the company, LABOR LAW changed to ensure that companies could be held accountable for not properly protecting their employees from disease. New health regulations and standards were put in place to keep workers safe and they stopped using the brushes after that point.
(I don’t have the data to say if there was a corresponding wage increase to factor for lost wages due to a slowing down after new regulations were made).
The point, though, is that this company willfully knew that its staff was geting sick and dying from the procedures they put in place, and lied to their staff and started a public smear campaign saying these women had sexually transmitted diseases instead.
That’s not on the “stupid” women, that’s corporate greed.
I’d also like to add that they were intentionally delaying the court case so there would be less girls left alive to be there. Even after they’re caught, they are still heartless shits. Don’t ever forget these poor women and the company that thought cycling through workers and leaving a trail of bodies was worth making more money at the top.
When they say regulations are written in blood, this is what they mean. Remember that when the government tries to cut back regulations, saying they cost companies too much money.
Hot take, but cis people have gender identities. They aren't the gender they identify as because of their genitalia or what their birth certificate says. They're only cis because they identify with a gender and it happens to match their government documentation. Cis men aren't men because they're "obviously" men for having a penis. They're men because they identify as men. It's the self-identification that dictates this, not any other factor, even for cis folks. And we should be framing it this way. A cis man identifies as a man and a cis woman identifies as a woman. There is no automatic or inherent gender.
You are not "born a boy/girl." Infants don't have a gender. You acquire gender when you identify as it. No such thing as "biologically a man/woman."
"I don't identify as anything, I'm a man."
It sure sounds like you identify as a man, bud.
Giving a brownie to cis folks who rb this.
Gonna admit the "this isn't a hot take it's obvious" comments from a dozen or so people are grating on my nerves, so I'm gonna address that.
Just say you've never had an actual conversation with a cis person outside of a very leftist circle lol. Obvious to you. To you, fellow trans person. I wish I got paid every time I had to hear a cis person say they don't have a gender identity or don't "identify" as anything they just "are" a man or a woman.
Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourselves what group of people a post is mainly directed at.
I'm not even like deaf or hoh but if you're adding subtitles to something I think you should always transcribe foreign languages too. None of that [Speaks Spanish] shit. You don't need to translate it to english. But you need to at least give the option for a deaf person to read it and understand it themselves. I don't care if it's not important to the plot. I don't care if it's just them saying like Okay or Damn or whatever the fuck. Write it down

I’m reading Percy Jackson for the first time and I want to read them all in chronological order. I’m coming up to the end of Blood of Olympus, so which series do I read once I’ve finished the Heroes of Olympus series?
Is it Trials of Apollo next? Is the newer Percy Jackson book set after HoO or ToA? Or should I read the Kane Chronicles or Magnus Chase?! Please help!
There's honestly something so cool about Ed being heavily ADHD-coded and walking away from the pirating life even though he's brilliant at it.
It's so incredibly hard to build the skills you need to have to be good at something when you've ADHD, to the point it's a common diagnostic trait - you grow up surrounded by the remnants of hobbies and interests you started and abandoned because if you aren't naturally good at it, if you don't succeed on your first try, your brain literally doesn't get the dopamine it needs to give you the chance to try again.
So what do you do? You find the things you're naturally good at, that your uncooperative brain will accept, and you stick to them. They're the only things you can do, even if they don't give you as much joy as something else might, even if they make you miserable. Soon enough, they become the only life you know.
And it makes so much sense why Ed falls for Stede, even outside his softness and his kindness. He is the emblem of the life Ed wishes he could've led, yes, but not only because of his class and his privilege. Stede gets to be a pirate even though he's objectively bad at it. He's allowed to grow! He's allowed to do the stuff that he wants, not just the stuff he's good at!
People have noted that Ed latches onto the idea of becoming a fisherman because he thinks he might actually have a gift in fishing after having caught one (1) fish, and, yeah, it's that same constraining perfectionism that so many undiagnosed people use to cope with ADHD. But note what happens after he gets told that no, he's actually a pretty mediocre fisherman? He leaves anyway.
He's going to do something he's not a born genius in for the first time in his life. And that's a huge step towards getting the inn he dreams of but also knows he'd be, with his current skills, absurdly bad at running.
as an entire queer trans allosexual i think it's weird when other allosexuals don't like the term allosexual for themselves. it just means not asexual. smacks of cis people who scream and howl and pee their pants about being called cis
"it lumps me in with my oppressors I don't like it" cis does that too. lumps your lgbt ass right in with cishet people. so like. why are you ok being called cis but not allo
allosexual isn't a slur it isn't perjorative it's just a word for not asexual. so that ace people don't have to feel othered as hell when talking about people outside their community. what the fuck do you want them to call you? "normal"? your mask is slipping
ok im done with discourse now i prommy. please treat me really niceys
