Shutting off her alarm, Y/N got out of bed and started getting ready for the day. Putting on a pair of leggings and an old college sweatshirt, Y/N grabbed her bag and walked out of her room. Grabbing the keys to the rental car, Y/N sent a text to Clark that she was leaving and headed out to the wedding venue.
âMorning everyone,â Y/N greeted all of the bridal party with trays of coffee and pastries in her hands. âHow are you feeling?â
âNervous,â Angie chuckled.
âDonât worry, youâll be fine,â Y/N comforted her future sister-in-law as she sat down in the makeup chair.
After talking to the makeup artist about the look she wanted, Y/N dug into one of the pastries she bought and coffee.
âSo, whatâs going on with you and Clark?â Angie asked.
âNothing,â Y/N simply replied. âWeâre just friends.â
âOh please,â Angie laughed. âIâve seen the look you both give each other at dinner last night.â
âOkay, what if I do like Clark?â Y/N looked at Angie. âMy mom won-â
âGood thing your mom is not here,â Angie interrupted her sister-in-law. âScrew her approval. Do whatever makes you happy. Iâve seen the partners she set you up with, and they donât treat you like youâre a person. Iâve only met Clark once, and heâs already treated you as you. Y/N L/N, investigative reporter for the Daily Planet. Not Y/N L/N, whose family runs one of the most successful businesses in all of San Diego. You deserve to be happy and not live in the shadows of your family.â
âYouâre right,â Y/N sighed.
Smiling and squeezing Y/Nâs hand for reassurance, Y/N smiled back before getting her makeup done.
*Back at the Hotel*
Waking up three hours after Y/N left, Clark went to the hotelâs gym to get a quick workout in and to get the nervous energy out before heading back to change. Adjusting his tie in front of the mirror, Clarkâs phone rang, showing that Jimmy was calling him.
âWhatâs going on Jimmy?â Clark asked his friend as he put on his watch.
âJust checking in on you,â Jimmy replied. âHow is it over there in San Diego?â
âItâs going alright, I guess,â Clark answered. âY/Nâs brother and father are great, but her mom. She is something. Wait, arenât you supposed to be going out with Eve right now?â
âSheâs running late, but whatâs up with her mom?â Jimmy quizzed.
âHer mom is the complete opposite of her children and husband.â Clark put his phone down and put it on speaker. âShe gave me a look telling me that Iâm not good enough for her daughter. Weâre not even dating.â
âYeah, right,â Jimmy scoffed. âYou and Y/N have heart eyes for each other. Everyone in the office knows this except for you two.â
âNo, we donât,â Clark shook his head before putting on his Dadâs watch. âSheâs an amazing woman, but she doesnât deserve me. She deserves someone better whoâs used to the lifestyle she was raised in.â
âDude, stop letting that voice into your head,â Jimmy groaned. âTell her you like her. Screw the rich and fancy society she was raised in. Bring that small town goodness to her.â
âSmall town goodness?â Clark questioned his close friend. âThat soundsâŠâ
âYou know what I mean,â Jimmy corrected himself. âLook Eveâs here now. You and Y/N have a good time at the wedding and tell her mom to screw herself.â
Hanging up the call, Clark fixed himself in the mirror again and grabbed the bag Y/N needed before heading out of the room. Getting into the Uber he ordered, he texted Y/N that he was on his way and he had the bag. Reaching the venue, Clark thanked the driver before getting out of the car. Heading to the space where Y/N told him to meet her, Clark paused in his step as she entered his view. All of the oxygen in his body left as he saw her all done up and in her bridesmaid's dress. The same reaction he had when he saw her in the dress she wore during the rehearsal dinner last night.
âGorgeous,â Clark blurted out when he walked up to her.
âHuh?â Y/N questioned.
âYou look gorgeous,â Clark corrected himself. âEven last night.â
âThanks,â Y/N felt herself blush at the compliment. âThatâs the bag?â
âYes,â Clark nodded his head.
âGreat, thank you so much,â Y/N got on her tippy toes and placed a kiss on Clarkâs cheek.
Thanking him again, Y/N headed back to the bridal suite, leaving Clark blushing. Making his way to the ceremony area, Clark felt his phone ringing. Taking out his phone and looking at the contact, he answered the call.
âSo, how did you react when seeing her in her bridesmaidâs get-up?â Lois asked.
âAnd hello to you Lois,â Clark sighed. âShe looks gorgeous.â
âWhen are you going to ask her out?â Lois questioned.
âAre you and Jimmy talking about us behind our backs?â Clark quizzed.
âJust saying, you two would be cute together. Also, youâre at a wedding,â Lois explained. âRomance is in the air.â
âYou two need to stop meddling in our love lives.â Clark told her. âThe ceremony is about to start.â
âAlright, if you need a wingwoman to get with Y/N, let me know,â Lois said before hanging up.
Chuckling and shaking his head, Clark sat down in one of the seats in the back and waited for the ceremony to start. Clark had small talk with some of the other guests around him until the ceremony started.
The ceremony was amazing. It went the way the now Mr. and Mrs. L/N wanted. It went smoothly, and there werenât any objections. There was no dry eye in the crowd. Clark may have shed a tear or two. Weddings make him emotional. But he wasnât focused on the couple. He was focused on Y/N, who stood two people behind Angie. The way the sun glistened on her skin and the wind blew in the wind. From time to time, he and Y/N would make eye contact, making them blush. They joked/lip-synced the I Dos to each other as Derek and Angie said theirs.
Now reaching cocktail hour, the wedding parties were taking pictures while Clark munched on some horâdourves and grabbed a drink for him and Y/N as he sensed they were wrapping up. Well, he mightâve used his enhanced hearing to eavesdrop on the photographers.
âA F/D for you,â Clark handed Y/N her preferred drink.
âThank you,â Y/N smiled. âYouâre my hero. Come on, we have time before the reception starts.â
Grabbing Clarkâs hand, Y/N led them to a quiet spot which looked over the ocean view. The sun was setting off in the distance creating different hues in the sky. Sipping on her drink, Y/N reflected back on the conversation she had with her mother and sister-in-law.
âI donât understand why my mom wants me to be like her,â Y/N started her ramble. âFind a husband. Get married. Become a housewife just like her while spending my husbandâs money. Iâm not her. I donât want to be her and live in this lifestyle she imagined me in.â
âThen donât,â Clark looked at her. âDonât become her. Become yourself. Become the Y/N L/N you want people to know.â
âYou didnât become friends with me because of my family, right?â Y/N looked at her close friend.
âNope, I saw you doing a handstand, drinking a whole bottle of Malibu,â Clark chuckled.
âOh god,â Y/N groaned. âNot that moment.â
âYes that moment,â Clark laughed. âBut, it was actually when we had our English 1A class with Harris.
âThat class was something,â Y/N sipped on her drink. âSometimes I wish my mom were like your mom, you know? That small town kindness.â
âGood for you because she already sees you as her daughter,â Clark smiled. âOh, I told her that I was coming to the wedding with you, and she wants a picture of us together.â
Nodding her head, the two took a selfie together and a couple of other pictures to send to Martha. Soon, Y/N had to head back to the wedding party for the reception. Heading their separate ways, Clark joined the other guests in finding their seats. Sitting down in his seat, Clark introduced himself to the guests sitting at the same table as him as he waited for Y/N to join them. Some people recognized him since they read the Daily Planet.
After doing her bridesmaid introduction, Y/N walked to the table and sat down next to Clark. Greeting the others who were sitting at the table, she caught up with them since she knew some of them from her childhood.Â
Throughout the reception, everyone ate the food that was catered, while speeches were given. Was it a good idea for Derek to ask his sister to make a speech? Most likely not because Y/Nâs speech consisted of her roasting her brother and a presentation of embarrassing pictures of her brother. Everyone enjoyed it while Derek flushed red from embarrassment. Y/N made sure to gift the printed photos of her brother to her new sister.
âHow many embarrassing photos do you have of your brother?â Clark asked as they watched Angie and Derek having their first dance.
âThe ones I showed are barely a quarter of the ones I have,â Y/N said, leaning against Clark and looking up at him.
Looking up at Clarkâs face, Y/N admired everything about it. The way his curl just falls, no matter how many times Clark tries to fix it. His fake classes perfectly framed his face, keeping up with his Clark Kent persona.
âIs there something on my face?â Clark raised his eyebrow.
âNo,â Y/N shook her head. âHavenât told you today, but you look handsome. You should wear three-piece suits often.â
âMaybe, but I need to test it to see if it can work with you know?â Clark gave her a look.
Nodding her head in understanding, the music soon changed, indicating that everyone come to the dance floor. Pulling Clark out of his seat, the two moved onto the dance floor, dancing to the playlist the couple created. Y/N and Clark mostly danced with each other, but there were times Y/N got dragged away by her dad, brother, or sister for a dance. The music soon turned from pop music to slow jams. Y/N was about to walk off the dance floor before Clark pulled her back in.
It first got awkward because they didn't know where to position their hands since it had been a while since they had slow-danced. After figuring out the hand positions, they swayed to the love ballad that played throughout the speakers. The scene around them soon faded into black, making them the only people on the dance floor.
âYou like him, donât you?â Margaretâs voice popped into her head. âHeâs not good enough for our family. Youâre not good enough for you. He only pities you because of the way you were raised.â
âIâm sorry,â Y/N whispered before letting go.
Walking off the dance floor and heading out, Y/N headed back to the spot where she and Clark were a few hours ago. The lights from the ships that were sailing along light up the ocean view. Leaning against the wooden fence, Y/N let out a groan at the realization that popped into her head. Itâs been the one thing sheâs been pushing awayÂ
âEverything good?â Y/N looked over to see her father walking up to her. âI saw you rushing off the dance floor.â
âYeah, everythingâs fine,â Y/N shrugged. âHow did you know you liked Mom?â
âIt wasnât easy,â Thomas chuckled. âShe was a hard one to decipher, but getting to know her more. I knew she was the one. Is something going on between you and Clark?â
âNo,â Y/N shook her head. âNot yet, at least. Momâs just been filling my head with all of these things. You know, to find a partner that's suitable for this family.â
âIgnore her,â Thomas told her. âWord of advice, follow your heart. Hey, Clark.â
Looking up from the ground, Y/N saw Clark walking up to them. Hugging his daughter, Thomas left the two of them alone.
âAre you okay?â Clark asked.
âYeah,â Y/N simply answered.
âFollow your heart,â Thomasâ voice entered her head.
âIâm going to do something stupid, and Iâm sorry if you donât feel the same way,â Y/N apologized in advance.
âWhat are you tal-â Clark was interrupted when Y/Nâs lips crashed into his.
Clarkâs stomach flipped over a thousand times as Y/N and he kissed. Not going to lie, he enjoyed it. He was building up the confidence to kiss her, but I guess she beat him to the punch.
Detaching their lips, Y/Nâs eyes widened, realizing what she had done. She was about to walk away from him until she felt Clark pulling her to him, and his hand cupping the back of her neck. Clark soon placed his lips on Y/Nâs, making them kiss for the second time. This time was slow and passionate and not rushed and out of impulse like the first time.
âYou donât know how long I wanted to do that,â Clark breathed.
âMe too,â Y/N blushed. âI really like you, Clark.â
âI do too,â Clark agreed. âYou had me at hello.â
âDid you just quote Jerry Maguire?â Y/N laughed.
âLook, it was the right opportunity,â Clark laughed along. âBut, I meant it. I like you so much Y/N. I would like to take you out when we get back to Metropolis.â
âI would love to,â Y/N smiled. âNow come on, I heard thereâs cake waiting for us.â
Locking hands, they walked back to the reception hall and made it just in time to watch Derek and Angie to cut their cake. They saw the smiles coming from them and Thomas as they saw Clark and Y/N being all romantic with each other. Y/N could sense her motherâs distaste, but she ignored it. After eating their slice of cake and some more sweet treats, they headed back to the dance floor, dancing the night away.
*The Following Morning*
Waking up next to each other- no, they didnât have sex- Y/N and Clark quickly changed into their casual clothes and packed their bags. Checking they didnât leave anything in the room, they headed down to the lobby and checked out.
âClark, it was good to meet you.â Clark and Thomas shook hands.
âYou too, Thomas,â Clark smiled before looking at Margaret. âYour daughter is a lovely woman and is the best thing that has ever happened to me. You should be lucky to have her as your daughter.â
âSo, I got us checked out,â Y/N approached the group. âWell, Iâll see you guys sometime.â
âWe might be due for a trip to Metropolis soon,â Thomas hugged his daughter. âYou two have a safe flight.â
âThanks,â Clark and Y/N thanked them.
With their car pulling up, Y/N and Clark got in and drove to the airport.
âYou are the best plus one,â Y/N told Clark as they reached their gate. âI should bring you to parties often.â
âWell, Iâll be your forever plus one,â Clark grinned before placing a kiss on her lips.
âWe havenât had our first date, and yet you already proposed to me?â Y/N laughed while raising her eyebrow. âYou move fast Kent.â
âWhat can I say? Love is in the air,â Clark chuckled before kissing her.
Soon, their boarding group got called, and they headed on the plane, excited for their upcoming date.
