The 5D photo of Mt. Abe in my back yard.
Beautiful Mt. Abe
I'm looking out the window this morning at beautiful Mt. Abe. I captured this shot with the new 5D and the Rebel. Let's just say the 5D won hands down. I have a 70 to 300mm lense on the 5D and I like that lens - but not for people shots.
More to be Thankful for
This is our first Thanksgiving out of Vermont in at least 5 years. I am missing Sheila's delicious turkeys and beautiful family. However, we are up in St. Felix de Delquier, Quebec with the cousins. Miraculously, the boys are getting along with their cousins. This is amazing because there has not been a lot of sleep in the last few days. Amazing what new toys can do for happy kids.
It has been a difficult fall all around. Terrible diagnoses for a close friend and a friend's child. There has been death in the family for both old and tragically the very young. I have a lot to reflect upon this holiday season.
So we are enjoying a house full of kids - and SNOW! One thing about being 8 hours north of Montreal, you are guaranteed for some good winter weather. According to my son - Winter is here!
5D Camera
Much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Healthy kids, new job, and new (well new to me) 5D Cannon camera.
All my lenses don't fit with it, but I am happy to have an alternative to the Rebel. It gave me a lot of grief this fall with the 99 error - which is probably a connectivity issue with the lens. I cleaned the connections and it worked for a while, but I did end up sending it back to get repaired. The turn around time was really great - less than 1 week, but the cost was just over $200. They replaced the connectors.
Autumn in Regent’s Park. By the very talented Ben Roberts.
Love these photos - especially the layout of the closeup. The dew drops are great as well as the symmetry with the leaves. The C curves of the leaves make the photo appealing to the eye. I love it!

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all the Veterans who have served and are serving. We spent part of the day at the falls along route 17 from Bristol to Waitsfield. Going over the gap, there is a little memorial park.
The water was clear and strong, just pouring down the mountain. A great place to reflect about the heros that are unsung as we have conflicts in many countries. Having two sons makes me ever thankful for their work. I am very lucky to be able to look at the waterfalls in Vermont and see the beauty of this fine state of Vermont.
Luke enjoyed looking at the water and throwing rocks into the water (of course). He was so surprised that the water was so loud moving so quickly down the mountain.
Vermont
Finally getting rain after the hurricane non-event. Grey day all day...which matches with the mood.

A Vermont photo I took two weeks ago...Mt. Abe in the snow. This photo is looking down main street in New Haven, Vermont. All the leaves are now down, but I was happy to see the first snow of the season.

Amazing fall photo!
Canadian Thanksgiving in Vermont
Every year, I host Canadian Thanksgiving. It happens to fall on Columbus Day weekend and the leaves are at their best, so people come to our house to celebrate. The last few years we have deep fried a turkey - an american tradition - and it is great fun.
The best part is all the men flock to the vat of oil. They enjoy some beverages over the 30 minutes or so the turkey cooks. Inside, the kitchen is free of people asking when dinner will be ready and the oven keeps all the other dishes warm because there is no turkey in it!
Shelburne Museum
One of the last trips to the Shelburne Museum where we enjoyed the Ti and the carousel. The weather was fantastic and it was the perfect time to be outside and enjoy fall in Vermont.
One of the defining things about the Shelburne Museum is the round barn. I love the "C" curves that it makes, and struggled to get this element in the photo. I used the round garden circles and the round barn in the background, but could not keep the boys out of the photos.
Of course, the leaves were peak - please see the gallery to see more Vermont Fall foliage.
serious
So, I promised myself I would not become a mommy blogger...but I do have one post I need to make in honor of my friend, Carolyn. I just today discovered that Carolyn is a mommy blogger - and an awesome one. Carolyn just discovered that she has a cancerous brain tumor - a serious one.
Carolyn is my best friend here in Vermont. We met at work on her first day at lunch. Over lunch, we found that we had lots in common, her parents were both chemists - ME TOO, her mom was a teacher - ME TOO, her birthday was Feb. 1 - ME TOO, she was a M.E. - ME TOO, ..... it was a little fun and a little scary at the same time.
During the time I met Carolyn, I was grappling with the fact that that I was pregnant. While changing to work out, Carolyn simply declared that she was a few weeks pregnant - and it wasn't planned. The first time I told anyone I was pregnant, it was in response to Carolyn - ME TOO!
Carolyn and I walked at lunch and discussed pregnancy, quickly planned weddings, smfbaby showers. My son was born at the end of July, her daughter at the beginning of September.
Our walks and talks changed to topics of diapers, all you can eat all night buffet feedings, and the dream of sleep. We scheduled time slots in the pumping room at work and during our walks we lamented not being able to drink and the challenge of providing food for our infants.
As our babies became toddlers, our walk discussion changed to kid milestones, time-outs, and daycare. Turns out both our children were strong willed and defied all the traditional parenting advice.
Slowly our talk became about next pregnancies. She really wanted a son, I really wanted a daughter. My second son was born, and then her second daughter was born.
She was laid off from work this spring, I was laid off this summer (ME TOO!) She found a new job and I did too. We have stayed friends through it all and shared countless memories and good times together.
Tomorrow is Carolyn's surgery to remove the tumor. She has moved to a hospital that has the best equipment and doctors to take the best care of her. She is strong and young and will beat this cancer.
Carolyn has a wonderful, positive approach to this news and has asked simply that people who are thinking of her give blood to help others. Karma is definitely on Carolyn's side in this fight. My thoughts are with Carolyn, her super, extra-supportive husband and her two beautiful girls tonight. I love them all and wish them well.
Update - 1 week later. Carolyn made it through her surgery and is recovering at her parent's house. She has a long road ahead, but I am so very thankful she made it through the craniotomy.
Enjoyed the fall pastime of apple picking at Douglas Orchard in Shoreham. Beautiful area with very friendly owners. My boys loved picking the apples and drinking some cider. The crop this year was not as plentiful in years past, due to bad weather in the spring, but there were plenty of apples on the trees to pick.
Challenge
Challenging times lately with lots of heavy news. I'm trying to stay positive and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery. The weather has been gloomy and overcast which fits the mood and is great for fall foliage photos.

Chicken Nesting Boxes
It was a beautiful fall day today. I spent part of it making nesting boxes for the hens. Not glamorous, not pretty, but highly functional.
