Starting off 2026 limping if only so that I can appear stronger by the end of the year. On the last day of last year, I had treated my friends horribly to the point I wasn't even sure if I would be friends with them coming into the new year. They were my closest friends and the people who treated me with kindness more than anyone. The fact that I had repaid them the way I did horrified me.
One year ago, Flavor Foley released Water the Roses. When it first released, I didn't think much of it other than "Yet another banger by FF! And it's about divorce, how wonderful hehe." By the end of the year, it had been given so much more meaning. More than anything, it's about a love that was torn apart and trying to move on even when you still love them. While the song is focused on romantic love, the night I was listening to it, I couldn't help but think of my friends.
Flowey and I have a strange relationship. I love it so much. I also kinda hate it haha. But most of all, I see myself in it. I see how underneath all the cynicism, it still loves Chara and desperately tries to cling onto the last remnants of them before it finally accepts that it has to move on. I see it struggling with this, and I want to hold its vines, saying, "We'll get through this together, old friend."
Making this piece made me feel some sort of peace. As of me writing this, I still don't know what will happen to me and my friends moving forward. Maybe I won't be calling them my friends soon. Maybe they still love me enough to take me back. No matter where the season takes us, the roses will still grow, and we will still bloom. Flowey will be okay. I will be okay.
