You can call urself a player, until u realise that Mr. Darcy insulted Elizabeth's whole family in front of her and still got her.
"We could have had this...all of this."
That line about killed me when I heard it for the first time. It's a show addition (at least I think it is, correct me if I'm wrong) and Alina says so much in those few words. In her time at the Little Palace, Alina was truly alone for the first time in her life. That's always scary but it's an important part of growing up, breaking away from your childhood gives you the opportunity to find yourself. Mal was Alina's comfort (her true North if you wanna go there), yes, but Alina depended on that relationship for everything. It defined her, gave her purpose, and gave her the only sense of security she'd ever known. But she'd never had the opportunity to stand on her own or figure herself out away from him. When she does, she begins to fall for the Darkling. If Mal was her childhood, perhaps she thought that the Darkling could represent her adulthood, her future (that's where I thought things were headed on my first read). He seemed to accept her, need her the way Mal never seemed to. Most importantly, he encouraged her to develop herself and be strong. Of course, it was all a lie.
Or was it????? I do not excuse the Darkling's actions, he set out to manipulate Alina and has a clear pattern of doing the same to other young grisha (part of why I think he's so interesting). However, I also believe that he'd begun to develop genuine feelings and respect for her. I think those kisses at the winter fete were real. I think his concern for her was real. But old habits die hard. Aleksander Morozova doesn't know how to trust people and I don't think he really knows how to love properly. He's never had the luxury to develop those skills, his life hasn't allowed him to. He couldn't let Alina in, he doesn't know how to treat someone as an equal. If he'd told Alina the truth, would things have been different? I think so.
So yeah, that's why that line eats me up. The what could have been. In the words of Adele "we could have had it alllllllllllll."
That line also implies to me that she would have chosen Aleksander over Mal if he'd been honest with her.
Alina almost calling Aleksander back to her.
I was looking for this edit!!! How i wish he heard her and turned back 😭
“The darkling was evil. He didn’t have feelings for Alina, he just wanted to use her”
The fact that he’s evil™️ and twisted does not prevent him being capable of feeling. I think the Darkling was a deeply emotional character, and he was portrayed so in the show. When his people are being killed, he doesn’t fuck off to Novyi Zem and tries to live an anoymous life. He stays, gains power, and shares that power with the rest of his people. He goes by the Machiavelli logic of “it is better to be feared than loved, if you can’t be both.”
When he meets Alina and there is a chance someone might finally understand him and stay with him, he gets attached. When she leaves him, and Ravka, he gets mad. He feels betrayed, not just for himself but for their people. How dare she abondon them when she is the only one who can help save them?
The Darkling is always motivated by his feelings. He doesn’t do evil shit just to be evil (this point is a little debatable tho since Leigh really tried to turn him into a “look at me I’m evil” type of character in books 2 & 3).
People say he uses the “it’s for a greater cause” excuse to hurt people. But that’s just the way he operates. He’s hundreds of years old, and so is this war and the injustice that the grisha face. Short, fleeting, human lives aren’t his priority. He’s trying to play the long game and end their struggles once and for all. He hurts and kills, but it is all in the name of his emotions, either towards Alina or Ravka & Grisha. Some of his people, somewhat rightfully so, hate & fear him for his actions. He doesn’t say “you ungrateful bunch” and leave them though. His love for Ravka and his people make him stay and fight for them. He is still grieved by the fact that some hate him when he’s just trying to help them though. That’s because, like I said before, he’s a deeply emotional character.
So the idea of the Darkling having feelings for Alina, being in love with her, makes complete and utter sense to me. The claim that he didn’t give a shit about her, or Ravka nd Grisha, and just wanted to use her does not.

SHADOW AND BONE (2021 — )
Don’t you hate it when you’re dead inside and run out of apps to refresh
*taps mic* Hey all. I would like to formerly announce that i will get on the Shadow and Bone hype train. Yes, this blog will stan Darklina and may be making contents about it. All posts will be tagged so block it if you want.
Is Ben Barnes the catalyst for me to get on this train? Yes. Is my impulse to ship ETL ships make me get on board? Yeap.
I am also aware of the trilogy’s ending….we’re not going to talk about that today.
I can't wait for the Netflix adaptation!!!

Emma (2020) | dir. Autumn de Wilde
On the west wall of this stupendous room is an enormous portrait of the family that owned and created it. Almost seventeen feet wide and eleven deep, Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke, and his Family c.1635 is the largest painting ever made by van Dyck, a joint portrait of the 4th Earl of Pembroke and his children. Each of the ten figures it portrays is just larger than lifesize and they dominate, as they were meant to, the gilded space in front of them. The painting is full of grace and aristocratic poise, of riches at ease with themselves, of what now would be called privilege and was then considered nobility. It exudes a distant and forgotten handsomeness, an abandoned world of elegance and power, neither stiff nor louche, but regal and familial.
