Ok this is it, I have to get something of my chest. Because of this goddamned Odyssey film I keep reading everywhere that Emily Wilson is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and because of this she has a unique take on the text.... NO NO NO THIS IS NOT TRUE she's the first ENGLISH woman to translate the Odyssey but women have been translating and publishing their translation since the 1700s !!!! In French and Italian and I'm sure other languages too!!

I'm so mad because students in Italy have been studying on Rosa Calzecchi Onesti's translation for decades!! Her translation is so well regarded it keeps being used in academia to this day and it's from the 60s!!! There have been dozens of other translations since then but we keep using that one !!!

i completely understand & agree with the backlash against students using chatgpt to get degrees but some of you are out here saying "getting a degree in xyz means pulling multiple consecutive all-nighters and writing essays through debilitating migraines and having severe back pain from constantly studying at your desk and chugging energy drinks until you get a kidney stone and waking up wishing you were dead every day, and that's just part of the natural process of learning!!!" and like. umm. i don't think that any of us should have had to endure that either. like maybe the solution for stopping students from using anti-learning software depends on college institutions making the process of learning actually sustainable on the human body & mind rather than a grueling health-destroying soul-crushing endeavor

im glad this version of the post is making rounds now. the amount of casual ai use i see some teachers do these days is disgusting and they genuinly dont see the problem with making school assignments for children using chatgbt, and even encourage them to use it themselves. school is about teaching kids how to think and they're taking that away from them. this is a sickness and we should be calling it out more so people realize the damage they're doing

i subbed a 7th grade class a few months ago and i gave them a written assignment and they had to use their textbook to find answers and weren't allowed to copy the text, they had to rewrite the answers in their own words. a simple thing i was taught as a kid. i banned the use of ipads and phones for the duration of the class.

50% of the kids couldn't find the many of the answers, even though they only had one chapter to read. the other 45% didnt know how to rewrite the answers in their own words. only 5% finished the assignment properly. they asked me repeatedly if they could ask chatgbt. almost all of their handwriting was on 1-4th grade levels. i struggled to read most of it.

this isnt their fault. the school system is failing them. the adults are failing them. 'we're evolving with the times' we are losing our ability to think for ourselves, and its all thanks to the system being set up. we should all be angry. why aren't we more angry

also one thing i've noticed, the kids that do all assignments and get the best grades have either;

-a home life where they're being taught properly

its never the kids' fault. it's how they're being taught.

I'll admit I'm wondering how any of these kids are going to be able to eg. do a job interview or a thesis defense or even just answer questions after a presentation. Their ability to critically think and seek information to ingest is just never being nurtured.

exactly this. chatgbt takes away their opportunity to research for themselves, so they dont learn how to. getting answers immediately takes away their chance to brainstorm. getting screens shoved in their face from toddler age prevents them from learning how to be bored, hence taking away their imagination. i really hope this problem gets fixed

I thought Adam Trask was a loser but then I met his son Aron Trask, and wow. wow! good lord. Steinbeck was on fire writing these two this way, the unbearable rigidity of "goodness" and all that. Charles Trask and Cal Trask are such better characters. but then, that's the point, right? I still maintain that Adam is the real villain in the novel, in that he is the cause of so much awfulness because of what he willfully does and chooses and what he refuses to do or choose. what's fascinating is that Aron grows up with his father's "goodness" but also behaves so much more abominably at times than his brother, because he is so unable to accept that the world is unable to match his goodness. he's so closed minded and sheltered and rigid in his belief in good and evil, and that makes him one of the least empathetic towards other characters in the novel. compare this with Cal, who is terribly empathetic, but in a way that his sensitivity to others' feelings is tied specifically to his "badness" compared to Aron. good grief this book really is that good! what a character study. I'm obsessed.
