the internet has highlighted and exacerbated a problem as old as patriarchy itself. nothing in this world will change until more people acknowledge that those last few sentences are our reality, and work toward progress. we’re seeing the reaction to that progress now, and it’s ugly and violent and crushing.
as for me? i’m homeschooling until high school. but i have the tremendous privilege of making my own schedule as a professor, and most moms can’t dream to do that. or they don’t want to, which is so fair. so they send their boys off into a world where they learn this entitlement and their girls off into a world that seeks to break them in some small way every day. i feel so much of this could be fixed by not letting children have any internet access until they’re in high school, and i certainly won’t let mine have a smartphone, but it seems that most parents quite literally refuse to even imagine the possibility of keeping their kids offline. why?
