Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band. Nick – vocals Akash – guitars Bryan – bass Pete – drums   What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)? Born and raised in the darkest parts of Chicago, IL. How did the band come together? How long has it been? Three of us (Nick, Akash, and Bryan) were in a band together a little over a year ago when we actually went on tour with Pete’s band. At that point in our career we decided that we needed a total makeover. Our drummer left and Pete decided that he needed a change so he came with us. How have you grown since you started? We eat a lot of veggies, that’s really important for sure. We also jam, hang out, and some of us even live together. It’s like a big family and that connection alone makes us brothers. What sets you apart from other bands? Well, we think there are a lot of things that set us apart…our tuning definitely sets us apart (but we won’t tell you what it is, it’s our secret). I’d also like to think that our tones set us apart. Most importantly, our live show sets us apart. We’re raw live and we let the emotions of our music possess us on stage. We don’t synchronize jump, we don’t stand in one place, and we definitely don’t crab-core. Every show live is unique to how the music makes us feel that night. We think that definitely separates us from the pack.  What’s the best part about being in your band? The therapy it gives us. We all have our issues and the music we create is definitely an outlet for that - an outlet for us. It’s also amazing to get up on stage and see the fans connect and release, too. We think they can really relate and that’s incredible.  More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making? We like to kick it old school. We’re influenced by a lot of old nu-metal like KoRn, Slipknot, Deftones and Linkin Park. We also listen to a lot of Meshuggah, Periphery, Rob Zombie, The Devil Wears Prada and letlive. We think the mixing of the old with the new has really helped to shape Lionfight. What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next? We continue to land amazing tours with bands that we respect. We have been lucky enough to meet and share stories with amazing people across the country. 2014 is going be a busy year for us. We’re self-releasing our debut EP as a free download on Feb 4th and our eyes are already set on creating new material for our full-length. No rest will be a part of our future.

Review:: Golden Hour | Ghost Town Jenny

POZ Interview: Felled Trees

PropertyOfZack had the opportunity to chat with Ed Breckenridge from Felled Threes (and Thrice) a few weeks ago for a great interview on the interesting project. We spoke with Ed about how Felled Trees somehow came together, a huge love for Dinosaur Jr., what the crazy recording process was like, possible future projects, and much more. There’s a big difference between knowing a bunch of dudes in bands and deciding to do such a big project. Could you talk about who started the chain of communication? Long ago, like in 2000, I had been searching. We did our first tour which was with Samiam. We didn’t really keep in touch. I hadn’t seen him in a long time and I just saw him last year at a Hot Water Music show. I was like, “Holy crap, I haven’t seen you in like ten years!” Or something like that, or really hung out. We just started talking about music and the kind of thing where you click like old friends or whatever. It was just really cool and we were just talking about things that we were listening to and Dinosaur Jr. came up and Dinosaur Jr. was having a show pretty close by and he was asking if I was going. And I didn’t end up going to it, but he called me later after the show and was like, “Where were you?” I had been talking to Garrett about – Garret from Texas Is The Reason – maybe just getting together and figuring out new songs and maybe we could record them or something. Like, “What do you think?” It was like, “Oh my gosh, yes please.” I was in the middle of having a pretty serious writer’s block. It was just exactly what I wanted to hear or do, just to take myself away from what I was doing or what I was stuck on.

I knew Roger because we toured with No Motiv long ago. I had seen him recently as well. When he was doing sound for RX Bandits, funny enough it was at Bamboozle, and it was actually… what is that called… the stage where people cover other bands… POZ: Like Hoodwink. Yeah, Hoodwink. RX Bandits was doing Fugazi and we were doing Hot Water Music.  I hooked up with him again and I didn’t realize that he was living so close to me. So I had been hanging out with those guys and calling them. It’s just weird how it all came together. But I think that Sergie was the guy in control, bringing people together and talking about the ideas and what not. 

There’s a few of you, but how did it turn into a lot of you? Where did you cut it off? I think what happened is that it’s just hard to get a bunch of musicians together at the same time. Garrett’s in New York and he was doing the Texas Is The Reason things and shows and what not he was really busy. We had been practicing and learning all of the songs and getting together – Me, Sergie and Roger and then we felt like we hit a point where it might be easier to bring more people in. Because Garrett wasn’t going to really be able to travel out and record ten songs. So we started asking if other people wanted to try it. And even that was kind of difficult. Because people would be like, “Oh yeah, yeah definitely. Let’s do this.” And then you’d never hear from them again. But I don’t know. 

Any time there are members of bands working together for a joint thing it takes forever. How long did this take? The timing of it is kind of hard for me to figure out. I think we got the songs together and recorded them in four months. I could be totally wrong. Sergie would be the better person to ask. But then recording the vocals and everything took a little bit longer. And Sergie had a Samiam tour in the middle of that after we had already recorded the instrument stuff for the songs. Actually, Jason, the singer of Samiam, didn’t know that he was doing this and was like, “Hey, I want to do that.” It ended up being awesome because his performances are really good and I’ve always loved his voice. 

You spoke a bit about having a writer’s block and that this was a fun thing. Was everyone into this as much as you were, in terms of “Holy shit, this sounds great” on so many different levels? I think so. I mean yeah.  Definitely Roger and Sergie and them were super into it. I think everybody was. But when everybody’s doing so many different things, like you have a day job, or whatever, it’s hard to have focus sometimes. But I think the three of us were probably the most focused. 

So there’s been an announcement, and at this point I think there are two songs out there? Yeah.  POZ: How is it going over? Dinosaur Jr. has a very cultish and big fan base. But I feel like the Thrice scene may enjoy Dinosaur Jr. but may not love Dinosaur Jr. Meanwhile, someone like a Texas Is The Reason fan or Samiam fan may love Dinosaur Jr. What’s it been like to see the reaction and to see different fan bases collide?  I was expecting a lot of negative reactions. I think we all were. J Mascis, not just J Mascis, but his voice is so unique, the way he plays guitar is so unique, and if there’s any regret that I have about it and how people may be like, “What is this?” is that we did it pretty close to the actual recording. Which was awesome for me because I could never really hear the bass on the original recording. And it’s amazing, listening to it in detail. Because when I listened to this record, for the most part, I always listened to it when I was younger and it was before I was really playing music or recording music and really picking music apart. I feel like once you record a record yourself, you can’t help but start taking records apart and being critical and what not. But it was really cool for me. I hope people enjoy it whether they’re not Dinosaur Jr. fans before or they are now. I think the vocals are really where people are really hit or miss – not saying that the performances aren’t good, but it’s a really unique way of singing. I think people that love Dinosaur Jr. are like, “What is this?” You know? But everyone likes being negative about everything.

POZ Showcase: Rookie Of The Year

To many, Rookie of the Year need no introduction. However, over the past decade of the Fayetteville, North Carolina indie-pop outfit’s career, much has changed. Rookie mastermind, Ryan Dunson, has gone through a lot, but now he is about to embark on the next chapter of Rookie of the Year’s career. With the release of Canova Presents: Goodnight Moon Part II, Rookie of the Year is looking towards the past to propel them forward. And forward is as bright as it has ever been.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band. I [Ryan Dunson] tend to switch between full band to solo. Depending on the tone of the record, sometimes it needs a full sound and sometimes it needs a more intimate setting. For this upcoming tour I am excited to have Kiernan McMullan on guitar. I think he will add a lot of talent to the sound. I will touring with many others that I will be announcing in the near future. Stay tuned!  

What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)? I grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It’s a military heavy town given the Fort Bragg influence. My mom was a Colonel in the Army when I was a kid and actually was a part of Desert Storm so there were many nights where just my dad and I ate way too much spaghetti. Growing up, I spent a lot of time by myself (or terrorizing my younger brother.) Something that I think really fueled my music career was the seemingly lack of music scene in my area (or at least music that I was interested in). I saw it as opportunity. As a pseudo-side job, I started to organize bookings for larger bands to play in my area. After I became more successful at throwing a good show, I started adding my band to open for them—gaining exposure. I also spent four summers with my grandparents in Clarksville, Virginia, Washington DC and Norfolk/Virginia Beach. I still visit from time-to-time but I am really on the road a lot. There are many towns I have played/stayed in over the past ten years that I feel I could call “hometowns.” I feel incredibly fortunate to be like family in so many places.

How did the band come together? How long has it been? It’s been since the Owl City/Relient K tour in 2010 since I have done any form of full band stuff. It’s all new again!

How have you grown since you started? Wow- loaded question. Most obviously I have grown musically. I have learned that while I can stay true to Rookie’s original sound, I can explore the boundaries. I’ve ranged from Friday-night pop-rock to a more softer acoustic, proving true to the variety that Rookie can accomplish. If anything, over the years I have learned to trust my musical instinct and to not be crippled by stifling opinions. I think that’s something that a newer artist might be caught up in. I have also grown personally. Cutting down my touring allows me to focus more on shifting priorities. Touring is notoriously strenuous on relationships. I have also started to focus more on my health. Apparently I won’t live forever.

What sets you apart from other bands? I know very few bands in my generation that have stood the test of time- in my case for over a decade. There is a reason Rookie keeps putting out EPs and records. My friends and fans’ unending support has not only financially enabled me to continue but they have also emotionally empowered the longevity of my band. Something else, as I mentioned before, is Rookie’s consistency. My friends and fans know what to expect of me year after year. If I ever got the musical urge to explore other sounds, I would (and have) start side projects. I do not attempt to conform or muddy Rookie’s consistency.

What’s the best part about being in your band? I am fortunate enough to have friends and fans all over the country so travelling is a big part of my job and I love it. This past January I went on tour to Europe with one of my favorite bands, Mae. Europe was incredible. France is a big favorite. Definitely one of my farthest travels to date and have a mentioned I hate planes? No? Ok, I hate planes. I’m going to change the subject now because I don’t like the word planes either. I think another huge perk about my job is the fan feedback: just knowing that I changed someone’s hour or day or year or life. I can’t count how many times I have received fan mail thanking me for a certain song. That the song helped them through a dark point in their life and sadly enough, I get a lot of fans that tell me a song helped them move past the thought of ending their own life. Knowing that I have affected someone that deeply is humbling as a musician. I can’t express how much I love helping people.

POZ Showcase: I Is Another

Alternative rock outfit, I is Another, may be call opposite sides of the country home (singer, Jonah Matranga, hails from San Francisco while guitarist/bassist, Ian Love, and drummer, Jeff Gensterblum, call New York City home) but the cohesiveness of their music certainly does not suffer. Rather, the distance seems to have brought numerous influences to the table for the trio to pull from. Give their brand of arena-ready alt-rock and listen and you may just be taken aback.

What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)? Jonah - San Francisco, California Ian & Jeff – New York City

How did the band come together? How long has it been? Jonah: Ian sent me some demos a couple years ago. I listened to them just because I thought they were great. Eventually, some words and melodies started arriving. He liked my ideas, so off we went.

Why should people listen to your band? Jonah: I’m not sure it’s possible to answer this question without sounding like a pompous idiot (laughs). That said: anyone that likes dynamic, moody music will find something they like on our album.

How have you grown since you started? Jonah: We really took our time writing and recording these songs. We were in no hurry. The more we sat with the songs, the more cohesive the melodies got, the more adventurous we got with the arrangements…it just got better in the way that only patience makes possible.

What sets you apart from other bands? Jonah: This is like that other question.  Um, I guess the main thing is that we’re not a band that’s hell-bent on fame and fortune. We actually just really love music. We’ve both been through so much over the last 20 years. We have nothing to prove. I think that shows in the music. It’s free.

What’s the best part about being in your band? Jonah: We really keep it simple. We know what’s important to us, so there aren’t the usual idiotic fights than can ruin the fun of playing music.
