Okay, I am finally breaking and ranting about Supernatural, specifically Samuel Winchester. I wish Sam got more attention within the fandom, and the show, I really do. I'm only on season 9, but looking back, despite seeming like the main character Sam is definetely sort of the reactor rather then the reacting, and Dean is given a lot of the moral playing field. While I am absolutely a Dean Winchester lover, don't get me wrong, it feels like the show is framed from his point of view, so whenever Dean does something wrong, there's a lot more sorrow towards his point, and framing it in a sad lighting where Dean looks forgivable and you pity the situation he's being put in, rather then Sam, who suffers more from Deans perspective in that he is always wrong.
Take Season 9 compared to Sam and Dean splitting up after Lucifer gets popped from the cage. When Dean tries to go back to normal and fails after Sam breaks his trust, he gets his full reasoning out. We see how much damage it did to Dean, when his brother was being manipulated and throughout the entire situation we get to see through multiple framings how Sam is in the wrong. It makes his actions look unforgivable, like bleeding that lady dry in order to fight Lilith, and trusting a demon, it's put in dark lighting, the phrase 'We don't trust Demons' gets repeated over and over, and they make sure to film it with a sense of wrongness.
However, when Dean tricks Sam in order to get the angel inside of Sams body, making him agree to something he'd never agree to under normal circomstances and then continuously lying about it, we see Deans perspective again. I mean, we barely get to see Sam struggle with the idea of accepting death, we don't even get to see him consider everything. This situation is about Sam, but we get to see Dean reacting to it more then Sam going through it. We don't even get to see how he thinks about leaving Dean, or get any kind of tension other then a brief moment of dream Dean trying to fight him to stay. He just kinda...accepts it. Meanwhile we get way more tension from Dean, and see how he struggles with Sam being in a coma, and how he'll do anything to get him out. Other then acknowledging that Sam wouldn't like it, Dean gets shamed from no other characters in the show, and there's more focus on how wrong he was to PUT CAS out of the bunker, then allowing someone else to hijack his brothers body. It makes him seem sympathetic. So when Sam disowns him as a brother when everything gets figured out, Dean has had so much sympathy poured into him, that you feel bad because you know how hard it was for him to make that choice, and how it ate him up inside, and you just want Sam to forgive him. That's how the show frames it.
In that same position, wasn't Sams wishes to help and drink demon blood and everything for a good cause? I mean, we as the viewer know it isn't, but save for the bunker scene and when Sam nearly calls it off, when do we really see people acknowledge that Sam just wants to do the right thing? He's trying to save the world, trusting the only person he's got that's telling him he can do this, that he can be good, and make up for the guilt he feels at just existing with this awful thing inside him. There's less sympathy because they make the choice seem so black and white with the framing for Sam, while for Dean, the greater good is frequently on his side, and there's a show of how hard it is for him to lose his brother, all of these things that make it easier to sympathize.
So anyways, I just feel like we need more Sam Winchester love in the community, coming from a professional Dean Winchester empathizer, and I plan on rewatching the show entirely after finishing to watch from Sams perspective, because I have come to realize I watched the entire thing from Deans eyes, and that limited my spectrum of understanding as well as my sympathy for Sam.
