Period drama I would like to see:
Archduke John of Austria & Anna, Countess von Meran. Because she didnāt start off as Countess von Meran, she started off as Anna Plochl, daughter of a postman.Ā
One night, sheās just living her life in a little town in Austria, when all of a sudden sheās woken up by her dad. Presumably he tells her something along the lines of,Ā āThereās a rich guy outside who needs a lift to Vienna,ā because before she knows it, sheās been thrown into some menās clothes and hoisted onto a carriage to pretend to be not only a man, but a coach driver. The man (the real one, not Anna) forgoes all known taxi etiquette and tries to strike up a conversation with his driver, where he quickly works out that sheās not a man, nor a driver, and is actually just a girl with a paper round. Anyway, she proceeds to reassure him that she can take him to Vienna, and he is suitably impressed with her confidence so attempts to impress her in return by telling her that he is, in fact, an Archduke of Austria, and the son of the Holy Roman Emperor.Ā
Anna doesnāt believe him, but plays along, because sheās a good coach driver and is about to make bank. John repeatedly tries to persuade her that heās telling the truth and she doesnāt buy it, so he probably says to her,Ā āfuck you, Iām gonna prove it, also I love you.āĀ
Anna drops him off in Vienna, and thinks no more of it.
Until John turns up at the post office where she works, with some sort of fancy paperwork that proves his lineage. Anna, still not sure wtf is up with this grown man, sends him away.
He returns multiple times, asks to court her, and she refuses, assuming itās all a joke, because this man is literally twice her age and the son of the Holy Roman Emperor. Eventually, presumably many decades later given how unimpressed Anna is by all of this, she allows him a date, and she actually likes him, so they begin a relationship.Ā
After a while though, the royal court begins to hear rumours of John dating a peasant. I can only infer that John heard these rumours, and on one date with Anna, proudly declared that,Ā āeveryone knows Iām dating you [heart eyes].ā At which point Anna loses her shit and breaks the whole thing off because itās too scandalous and John could lose a lot. John, baffled that Anna doesnāt see how wonderful his fall from grace is, immediately proposes marriage.
I couldnāt find the part of the story where she reacts to his proposal, but I like to think Anna asked him if was a fucking lunatic, and John was like,Ā ā??? youāre literally the best woman alive,ā and she was like,Ā ā!!!!!Moron!!!ā
Eventually she agrees to marry him, because despite her better judgement, she loves him. Stupidly, she assumes that John will ask the Emperor for a morganatic marriage (one where they both admit theyāre unequal, and that any children of the marriage will be legitimate but have no titles.)Ā
But PLOT TWIST Johnās gone straight the Emperor and been like,Ā āI want to marry this woman, and I want her to be an Archduchess, thank you goodbye.ā The Emperorās head explodes (again, I can only infer this) and John takes that as a no. They donāt get married until 11 years later, when finally both the Emperor and John accept that it will be morganatic. (Anna, meanwhile, is in the background like,Ā āI donāt care about the titles? Truly, honestly, do not care, never haveā and John being like,Ā āthatās not the point!!!ā having absolutely no chill whatsoever.)
They have one son together, who does eventually inherit a lesser title, and the family live happily ever after.
