Your one-stop shop for things that were never said by Toriko characters! (Unofficial home base of the remaining Toriko fandom) • Inspired by Shimabukuro's manga/anime series Toriko • Mod is active, just forgetful
Welcome to the delicious world of Incorrect Toriko Quotes! A full course of classic fandom-blog shenanigans served up by yours truly.
THIS IS NOT EXCLUSIVELY AN INCORRECT QUOTE BLOG!!
"Incorrect Toriko Quotes" has slowly become a slight misnomer. Originally it was exclusively an incorrect quote blog, but since I seem to be the longest-running relatively-active Toriko blog, it's become your one-stop shop for all things Toriko!
HELP/ABOUT | SEARCH BY CHARACTER | BLOG LORE
Posts about:
Incorrect quotes (obviously)
Memes
Theories!!
Polls, tournaments, quizzes, etc
Videos, namely of dubious Toriko recipes.
Other Toriko-related stuff. Reblogs, asks, random musings, the very very rare piece of fanart... cringe culture is dead and I'm serving it up at Hotel Gourmet!
Always open to question/answers, submissions, sharing other people's theories, etc! The inbox is always open to everything you've been cooking up!
This blog has a lot of running jokes - check the "Blog Lore" section to catch up! Nobody shall be excluded from this table!
Won't post about:
Ships. I try and keep shipping out of my blog so that it's open to all hc/interpretation (with the obvious exception of offhanded Toriko/Komatsu mentions because... obviously.)
Look, y'all. I'm an internet fandom veteran. I don't do callouts, drama, fandom/shipping wars, pro- this or anti-that... this blog is just for stupid memes
Based on...
Mostly the arcs that overlap between the anime/manga
But SPOILERS ABOUND for everything up to the end of the manga so block spoiler tags as needed
Also I think I like, once made a post about the movie.
I don't post about the crossovers. I'm not 100% opposed to it, I just don't feel like it.
I've introduced myself briefly many times, but it's easiest to access if I pin it.
Some years ago I was nicknamed "Mod Chef", but you can just call me "Chef" if that's easier. I'm a he/him but like. not picky about it. If you need to switch it up to make the joke land that's cool. Normally mod nicknames suggest multiple mods, but not here! It's just me, some random Japanese guy who won't let this fandom die.
I started with the anime and graduated up to the manga. I've also seen the movies/crossovers. I do try and keep most of my posts understandable for anime-only and manga-only fans (ie the overlapping arcs), but not always.
So let's give thanks to all the ingredients of the world and dig in to some authentic, home-cooked anime nonsense!
Toriko? In 2026? It's more likely than you think...
The first episode of Toriko aired on 3 April 2011...
I started this blog in August of 2020.
At that point, Toriko was already 13 years from its release, and it had been almost 5 years since any new media. (The manga ran from 2008 until 2016).
This post was originally scheduled to go up on the 5th anniversary of this blog, because I didn't think I'd still be doing this up until the fifteen year anime anniversary.
So buckle up, 'cuz it's gonna get sappy.
I don't know many people who've even heard of Toriko. But I started watching as a kid and lemme tell you, this was the show that raised me. Some kids grew up on Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Pokemon... Toriko was my thing. Which is kinda funny looking bad because, well let's face it, Toriko is objectively not very good. In fact, Toriko is my favourite example of "I said I liked it, I didn't say it was good." And I'm a die-hard fan to this day.
This blog has... seen some things. It saw me through my high school graduation and (most of) my Bachelor's degree. It saw me through my first relationships. It saw me through multiple jobs until I finally reached my dream job. It saw me through the goddamn boiled pepsi thing.
(Yeah, if you were wondering why so many of the posts seem kinda juvenile, it's because I drafted like, 75% of this blog's content in like 2020, so give me a break)
It's funny how a stupid meme blog ended up being so sentimental to me. Honestly? I expected to get bored of Incorrect Quotes and abandon the blog in less than a year.
Thanks for helping keep the fandom afloat, everyone! It's been such a fantastic community to participate in.
(If the blog is still alive when this post goes up, don't consider this post a goodbye. I'm scheduling this way in advance in case I forget again.)
Consider this my way of giving thanks to you (and all the ingredients of this world!)
Takimaru: Why is he the only Knight with a nickname?
Ever noticed how the Gourmet Knights talk about each other?
It doesn't take a Japanese linguist to know that using full names + -san is a polite, more formal way of addressing someone. These guys spend every waking hour with each other, obviously living and hunting together. It seems overly formal for such a close-knit group, but it's obvious the Knights live by a classically knightly code of being formal, polite, and respectful.
But... hold on...
In this flashback, Aimaru is scolding a younger Takimaru for losing concentration. And calls him... Taki? No honourific, not even a full name.
And this is... a recurring thing I've noticed. Takimaru seems weirdly talked down to by the other Knights.
There it is again: "Taki".
Now, I have two theories as to why this is:
It's because they're scolding him. Notice how in both these situations, Takimaru is being absconded for acting out (in the first one, he wasn't focused enough in training, in the second one, he's butting heads with Aimaru and being told to stop).
Takimaru is the "baby" of the Knights. And they either aren't giving him the same respect the others get because he's the youngest and newest, or because they've had him around since he was a kid.
Let's break these down.
1. They call him "Taki" when scolding him.
When Aimaru speaks about Takimaru, he refers to him as "Takimaru", his full name. This is seen in the Eco Nori episode, when Aimaru and Toriko mention Ice Hell and Takimaru's subsequent growth:
But this is when he speaks about Takimaru, not to him. Which tells us a few things:
Aimaru does, actually, respect Takimaru. He doesn't want Takimaru to look bad in front of others. Sure, in that second screenshot Aimaru is warning Toriko that Takimaru is new and not to be overestimated, but he's still indicating that Takimaru deserves respect.
Calling him "Taki" is not a force of habit, but a conscious choice.
Furthermore, Takimaru doesn't react differently to the different names. So it doesn't take him by surprise to be nicknamed or not. Obviously, then, this isn't upsetting to him.
So possibly this is because they're absconding him, and he knows it. He's been raised and kinda parent-ed by the Knights, so it would make sense they'd call him a diminutive name. Which ties into the second point:
2. Taki is the "baby" of the Knights
It's possible there's some kind of 'child-like' connotation here. Perhaps, since he was taken in by the Knights at such a young age, they nicknamed him 'Taki' because he was a little kid, and the nickname comes back when they remind him he's behaving childishly, or in an un-knightly fashion.
Perhaps it's even a sort of denial in the other Knights themselves, especially when it's because Takimaru is pleading for Aimaru to take the medication. Like they still want to see him as a little kid who needs Aimaru instead of an adult. But that's entirely speculation.
Also, I think both theories can exist simultaneously but don't necessarily rely on each other. Realistically, we don't have enough screen time of these guys to be sure.
What I DON'T think it indicates:
They don't respect him / are 'hazing the new guy': Their whole schtick is to be knightly; respectful, polite, kind. I really don't think the Knights are going to be hazing a child they rescued from being, y'know, literally cursed and abandoned.
That Takimaru is viewed as more of a 'friend' than a fellow Knight: Although there is one other instance of a Knight going by a nickname (Toriko refers to Aimaru as just 'Ai'), this is because Toriko and Aimaru have been friends for years, and also see each other as equals. Obviously Takimaru is not viewed as an equal to the other Knights (see above: Aimaru telling Toriko that Takimaru is a novice and very green compared to the other Knights, also being the lowest in rank based on their tattoos). It's possible he gets called 'Taki' because they see him as the group baby, but I doubt it's because they're all particularly close with him. IF it was only Aimaru who did it, I would argue that it might be because Takimaru is Aimaru's disciple and likely much closer with him than the others. But since other Knights do it too... I'm not so sure.
Toriko: Look, Ai, I want to apologise for saying we should leave you behind with your ugly horse. For what it's worth, I really like having you around.
Aimaru: No, you don't.
Toriko: I know. I have dreams where I staple your fingers to your face.
"My favourite Christmas movie is Die Hard!" Yeah well my favourite Christmas movie are the two Toriko Christmas special episodes that start with "look, we're all romping through the snow decorating a big Christmas tree" and somehow end in "the real victims of war are children starving in the streets and dying to bioweapons in countries ruined by corruption, greed, and violence"
Running gags in Toriko that are fantastic and deserve the recognition they get:
All four of the Kings calling Komatsu something completely different
Sunny being jealous of Coco's ability to make a grand entrance
"Did you just call me handsome??"
Warden Love's infatuation with Zebra
Running gags in Toriko that are also fantastic and I think deserve more recognition, too:
Sestuno's obsession with making everyone have Jirou's haircut
Whatever the fuck Aimaru and Toriko had going on
Look I know a lot of people don't like Zongeh (fair) but you have to admit, even having the characters in-universe show they don't give a fuck about him either is pretty funny.
