I’ve been trying to put my finger on why Hades being depicted as a villain is so annoying in other media but works so well in Hadestown, and I think I’ve figured out why: Hadestown Hades isn’t the bad guy because he’s the god of the DEAD; instead, he’s the bad guy because he’s the god of WEALTH. Usually, whenever Hades appears in a movie or video game, he has some stupid motivation like “ughh I’m tired of being lord of the underworld I wanna be lord of everything” or “I’m the Greek mythology version of the western concept of Satan, fear me!!” but Hadestown really said screw that and made his motivation “I love my wife so much but we have a shitty marriage arrangement and her long absence combined with my severe self-doubt has lead me down the hellish road to corruption by all the riches under the ground.”

#okay but you could argue! that in hadestown specifically#hades being the god of wealth and the god of death are both part of him being a capitalist#unsafe practices and hazardous materials kill or disable a LOT of construction workers#labour laws are written in blood#and it’s impossible to get filthy rich like that without exploiting other human beings

Sorry @exeiguess but your tags passed peer review. This is it exactly. The two are intertwined especially when it comes to discussions of labor and worker’s rights and exploitation, and THAT’S part of what makes him work so perfectly as the antagonist in Hadestown.

the fact that cats don't really meow much in the wild and it's largely a noise they make to communicate with us is already delightful, but its much funnier when you realize humans parrot this sound back to cats to communicate with them. no one involved knows what this noise means, we're just chirping at each other. everyone who interacts with cats has basically created their own inter-species pidgin with that specific cat or group of cats.

I've made posts about this before, but I get infuriated every time I remember that the most pressing issue to some gamers? Was not the rampant greed, negligence, etc on display in the gaming industry.

The signs of decay have long since been there. But a good chunk of them were not worried about games becoming $80. Or that the people who made their favorite games were getting laid off, overworked, or paid pennies while a CEO went home with 10s of millions. Or that AI is ballooning prices and pricing people out of the hobby.

None of that.

To them the issue was a woman protagonist they couldn't sexualize. Or seeing a Black character they couldn't ignore; who was the main character and not a sidekick.

All that energy towards the wrong thing. Galvanizing people towards the nonissue. And now the actual one has reached an apex we likely can't come back from.

And it's the same with movies and television if we're honest. But that's a conversation for another time.
