...case in point. and since qrow is famous enough huntsman to have fanboys, i've come to decision that this is his fault and he is a trendsetter, whether he knows it or not.

All of Ruby's current situation had reminded me of the lyrics of Friend in a fascinating way. Because Penny promises that she'll be there for Ruby, and that they'll protect each other (yes, reference to a bees line, especially fascinating now that bees are canon). But it's very clear now that Ruby has never let anyone do that. She's never let anyone protect her. Penny has never protected Ruby, emotionally speaking.

That's kind of the key to this breakdown, everyone relies on Ruby, and Ruby never relies on anyone.

But we know from the song that Penny wants to protect Ruby, she wants Ruby to count on her just as much as Penny could count on Ruby. She just hasn't gotten that chance yet.

Ascension is tricky business, memories are lost but the heart rarely forgets, changes happen as informed by what someone wants, a new purpose is gained... and it can happen to someone from Remnant, as we all just painfully learned.

If Penny were to ascend, she wouldn't want a purpose built into her again. But the heart rarely forgets and if she saw Ruby again she would choose to help Ruby, even to have that be her purpose. And the tree, knowing this, of course would not let Ruby pass by her without taking her along.

If Penny were to ascend, of course Little is who she becomes.

"Protectors of each other's what we'll be", is what Penny's song says. That's not true yet, but Little will be there with Ruby in the ascension process. They're the only one that can help Ruby right now. Between giving that role to an entirely new character with very little going on besides being adorable, or giving that role to someone who's got some catching up that she clearly wants to do when it comes to helping Ruby... I know which one I'd pick.
