So I don’t know how exactly things will go when Dec 17 hits. If Tumblr sticks around and the filter doesn’t make it impossible to exist, I’ll still be here. 

If not, I’m planning to migrate over to Pillowfort probably under this username or my AO3 one (InkAndAmaranth). If that happens, I’ll post it here in case anyone’s interested.

“Nice to know you’re not about to shoot me either, Maddi.” Nerys leaned back against the wall of the building behind her. “Where is it you were trying to go?”

The young woman looked at the other worried for a moment but she relaxed “Can you tell me where I am miss?” she asked

Kira frowned. “On Bajor, in Dahkur Province,” she answered. “Did you get lost? And, please, call me Nerys.”

“I didn’t realise there’d be any visitors. Is there something I can do for you?”

“I don’t think I have much interests in holosuites.” Marika wasn’t really sure what she would do in one and it seemed like a waste of time, “Is there more there than the holosuites?”

“I’ve always said the same thing. Doesn’t stop my friends trying to ‘open my eyes to the joys of holosuites’.” She chuckled. “There’s a bar, a few restaurants and shops. We have a temple on the station as well, if you need somewhere quiet to meditate or pray.”

Marika thought about getting back to her daughter, but she should be alright for now and Marika really did want to see more of the station, “That would be excellent. Thank you.”

“Great.” Nerys smiled. “Well, most people spend their downtime in either the replimat, or Quark’s. Quark’s has a few holosuites, but don’t let him over-charge you for anything. He’s a Ferengi, and I don’t trust him as far as I’d like to throw him.”

Marika nodded. That sounded like something she could do. She hoped her rank wasn’t high enough to have her deal too much in politics. She didn’t think she was cut out for that yet.

“You won’t be starting work until 0800 tomorrow. What you do with your time is up to you but, unless you have something else you’d rather be doing, I’m happy to walk you through some of the promenade’s main attractions.” She made a mental note to cut the Klingon restaurant out of her tour.

“What do we do on the station exactly?” It seemed like Starships had so much more since they actually traveled. The station was a little more just… here.

“Well, we do a lot of things. It’s not just station business. A big part of the station is commercial: trade ships, restaurants, shops, Quark’s - it’s a bar.” Kira looked over at Marika. “As for you, Ensign, we needed more pilots. When you’re not taking the helm, you’ll be working in Ops.”

Marika shook her head, “This is my first assignment actually. My brother and I just graduated.”

“In that case, congratulations.” Nerys grinned. “DS9 might be a little overwhelming at first, but you might find you adjust to it more easily than someone who’s previously been posted to a starship. The dynamic’s a little different.”

Marika smiled and led the way out of the office. The station was busy which made it feel nice yet the cardassian architecture made it feel cold, “The station seems like an excellent place.”

“It is.” Kira nodded, falling into step with her. Hands clasped behind her back, she continued, “But don’t take it from me, I’m a little biased. Have you been assigned to a space station before?”

Marika nodded, “That sounds excellent.” She smiled, wondering what the Major had to show her. Well, she did want to know more of what was on the station.

A smile spread across her face. “Perfect.” She stepped up to the doors of her office and, as they opened, gestured ahead. “After you, Ensign.”

Marika nodded, she felt weird being on the station. She was fully aware of all the horrible things that had happened on this place. She knew that she would be sleeping in cardassian build quarters and that freaked her out. “I’ve already seen my quarters actually.” Marika said, “I was shown them just after I arrived.” It was mostly so she could leave Nell there which also scared her.

.”Alright... How about a walk down the Promenade? I take it you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet.” Nerys cringed inside, and wondered if the ensign would hold a grudge against her if she was the one who introduced her to Quark. Because, in her place, she’d have been sorely tempted.

Marika walked into the room as the door slid open. She still felt awkward around starfleet superiors. Kira wasn’t technically a starfleet superior but it was the same kind of them. Authority figures were intimidating. “I’m Ensign Kalum Marika, I was told to report here when I arrived.”

The ensign’s name was towards the bottom of the list Kira had been given two weeks ago, looked at once, then didn’t go back to. She erased the name from the list and stood up. “Yes, thank you, Ensign.” Leaving the padd of names on the desk, she stepped around it to stand beside the other woman. “Why don’t I show you to your new quarters and we can talk along the way? I’m sure you don’t want to be cooped up in this office anymore than I do.”

The past few weeks had been the uncomfortable sort of busy, the kind with far too many Admirals to talk to and far too little time for station business. Now that it was all over, Nerys didn’t trust the lull one bit - as it was, now would’ve been a great time for someone to walk into the office and tell her that the Universe was imploding.

Marika wasn’t sure how she felt being assigned to DS9. She had been hoped to have been assigned to the same place as her brother. And she wasn’t quite sure what all her jobs here on the station would be. She had wanted to see more of space. But she did like that she was now close to home. Marika knocked on the door to the office. This was where she had been told to report. She wondered if she would be allowed to wear her earring with her uniform since it was a bajoran station.

Although she highly doubted that that knock was the universe imploding, she let out a sigh and dropped the pad she was reading onto the desk anyway. “Come in.” It occurred to her that it might be one of the newly-assigned personnel and, at that, she sat up a little in her chair. With the Alpha Quadrant in a state of relative peace, the Bajoran sector was a slightly less interesting posting and several of the personnel on the station had checked out. Kira hadn’t had time to acquaint herself with their replacements yet, but it wouldn’t look good if she greeted them slouching with an expression only four weeks of admin could give you.

"Hey, have you seen a tribble anywhere?" Nerys sighed. "Someone let one loose around here and, if I don't find it soon, we'll be walking on furballs by tomorrow afternoon." (So, have a tribble?? Because it's 11pm here and I can't think of anything better at short notice)

Jo tilts her head.

“Tribbles? Here?” Jo sighs. “I can help you find it, if that helps… ‘m Jo.”

“That’d help, thanks. It’s best if we start here and work our way out.” 

She pauses, and extends her hand to shake. “Nerys. Kira Nerys,” she says, tagging the introduction on the end of it all like an afterthought.
