Castiel always knew he was different. The forest was full of trees, but none were like him. It did not trouble him much. Not while the human boy, Dean, spent his days recounting adventurous tales in the shade of Castiel’s leaves.
Since Castiel was a seedling, he’d known they were kindred. Until the day the Dean’s family left, and Castiel was all alone.
Years later, when Dean returns to the forest as a grown man, Castiel discovers how transformative their bond can be.
Castiel has been on edge since the incident.
Since the moment he tore free from root and bark and everything changed.
Now, back in his old self, he sees the sun set with his almost vision — not the sharp lines and colors he’d experienced in the brief moments he’d left his woody vessel, but the sense of light, shadow, and form that seems to muster when he concentrates on knowing the space around him. The moon is rising, and in the forest, the night birds and insects are singing, the cacophony of summer giving way to the slow, sparse chatter of autumn. Castiel ignores their banter, putting all of his effort to reach high, as if in doing so he could touch the moon…the only one who might be able to give him an answer, after all, it was the moon who first whispered his name.
What’s happening to me? He silently pleads, hoping she will answer.

Her light shivers through his canopy, silver and soft.

There’s a sudden stillness, deeper than roots, more ancient than the forest around him, then...
It’s no more than a whisper, but it thrums through him like the charged hush in the air before lightning strikes.
Dryad? Castiel repeats the unfamiliar shape of it, feeling its strangeness, its weight. What does that mean?
Rest, little lost one, she answers, her gentle light combing through his leaves.
