I was able to make a boot drive of El Capitan while running Mountain Lion. It sorta worked but got all weird and shut down a bunch of times. So now I ripped out the drive and am using an older 2009 MacBook white to install it via a hard drive dock. Man this was not easy but I’m happy with the outcome. Hopefully this works. It’s back!! And I figured out why, it involves my own personal mandela effect. I could of sworn this 13” MacBook Pro was a mid-2010 with an i5 processor but now it’s a mid-2009 with a Intel core 2 duo processor. So weird cuz the fact that it was newer and had a better processor was the reason I bought it. Back in 2012, I was cutting a short film that was shot on RED in 4K on my current 15” 2009 MacBook Pro. I made 1080p proxies and edited the short along with colour correction but when it came time to export. The damn thing took 4 days and would always fail. So I bought this newer 13” Mid-2010 MacBook Pro with the i5 processor. Upgraded the OSX, ram and Premiere. Now the export took 3 days instead of 4 and it actually finished properly. I delivered on the project. As time went on the screen on this laptop started having issues and I used it less and less but now we’ve been using it a lot in the living room with a monitor for YouTube, so it’s been valuable in that regard. Like I said it in my earlier post, it was slowing down so I wanted to update the OSX to High Sierra thinking it was a mid-2010 only to find out it’s actually a mid-2009 which is the cut off. I can’t explain it. Why would I replace my 15” MacBook Pro with a 13” MacBook Pro if it was the same year (2009) and processor (intel core 2 duo)? I pride myself on knowing my computers specs so this threw me for a loop. Other than the ram upgrade 4 to 8gb but that would be transferable. Very mind boggling but explains why I was getting the do not enter sign, with it being an early 2009 it’s too old for Sierra and needs El Capitan. I can’t make a boot drive for El Capitan in Sierra and I don’t have any computers in Yosemite anymore so I went with the trusty old Snow Leopard Disc. At least it brought it back to life so I could check the specs. Turns out this MacBook is not gonna boot no matter what I try. I’ve fixed this issue before with a new hard drive cable but this seems to be something different. The frustrating thing is that the issues I’ve had are not consistent enough to narrow down the problem. It’s an old MacBook I bought for $400 in 2012 so I got a good 6 years out of it. The screen went on it a few years ago but we used it with a monitor. Like I said in my other post it was our living room computer so it wasn’t any of my editing systems but was nice to watch YouTube on. It’s always funny, the serendipity that can happen while troubleshooting a problem. Last night I was having issues installing High Sierra on an old MacBook. Eventually it worked but my next move was gonna be to try a different drive. So when I looked around, I found a 100Gb drive instead of the 500Gb drive that was giving me issues. Since we only use this comp in the living room for YouTube. 100GBs is lots and I can use the extra 400Gbs for archiving old projects. I have a vga/video out box that gives me a couple analog feeds so I can use my 1998 Hitachi tube tv. It appears that all the macs still running just Sierra have slowed down to a halt. Not really sure why but it’s forcing me to do some much needed updates.
