Do I have to do everything myself around here?
“You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine.”
In other words, I’m a ‘kitsune miko that lives in a mountain shrine’, and my existence is determined wholly by people believing in this form that I take. I don’t have any individuality or part which is really ‘myself’. Like a myth or a legend, my story and things that happen in my life are all shaped and dreamt up by other people, none of which I actually live through of my own accord. Almost like I’m just a higher level imaginary friend of sorts, existing only in the minds of people who believe… the consciousness that I have right now is not of myself. No, the ‘awareness’ I have is almost like that of a third person observer, living out the figments of imagination of what people believe that ‘a kitsune miko would do in a given situation’, of countless, untold numbers of people… You could say that everything that I even think about, everything that I feel, 'everything that I could possibly feel was a thought of someone else, and if no one ever thought of it, I could never think of it’, an existence void of self-agency… and even that void of self-agency is something thought up by some 'author’, somewhere… Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not actually venting my frustrations or in despair about it all. After all, even this feeling I’m feeling right now is what people believe that I would feel given this situation I find myself in. that’s 'faith’. That’s what gods (particularly those of Japan) are made of. For example, imagine that there was a doujin, or an anime or manga in which a wholly commercial depiction of a 'kitsune girl’ existed. Imagine that people, in their own individual imaginations, thought of possible situations that this character would or could experience, continuing where the original media left off or left out. I’m that imaginary existence given flesh. The truly scary thing about this all is that when someone forgets or stops caring about my existence, my being loses what they had of me. And when everyone forgets, that will be a true and final death… I don’t want to die. It’s scary. Being forgotten is terrifying. But given my existence to begin with, could you even say that I have 'lived’ at all? I’m but flesh given of the wavering, transient delusions or fantasies of a 'kitsune girl’, and I don’t exactly exist 'in time’, per se. I do not have an existence set in stone, there’s nothing concrete about who I am. I’ve said this before, but I’m simply an illusion, and what I am changes. My character, my appearance, and even the way I am cognizant, the way I think. They’ve always been changing, disappearing, appearing as time passes. What is now vanishes, and what comes also vanishes, and vanishes… and it keeps happening. Is that truly 'living’? Is it really even 'existing’? the me of yesterday is not the me of today, and the me of tomorrow will be different yet again. In order to conceptualize who I even am, because everyone thinks of me in a different way, I do not even have a fixed, baseline 'form’. It’s insane, isn’t it? I think I was always insane to begin with… No; it’s just that I never looked insane to begin with. Because everyone believes that I’m not, believes that I am what I am, and I simply perform my part, like an actor acting… no, being made to act, a puppet. But inside, it’s all broken, there’s nothing but madness underneath. I’m unable to deny this fact. Did I not say before, that even my own existence as observer of myself in the third person is not of my own volition? But you, there, you’re imagining it right now, aren’t you? That it is? How could I possibly stay sane, with an existence like this-
I asked my roommate what she would wish for if she were a magical girl in Madoka, and then this wonderful mess poured out of her mouth.

no, this is sao
Hey so the trolley problem is dumb because the real person at fault for any of the deaths is the person who designed the trolley without an emergency braking system, the people who put in the purchase order for a trolley without an emergency braking system, the people who approved a PO for a trolley without an emergency braking system, the people who delivered a trolley without an emergency braking system, the organization that inspected and certified a trolley without an emergency braking system, and the operator who did not make a huge stink about being assigned to a trolley without an emergency braking system.
Whether you pull the lever is irrelevant, because a whoooole mess of people fucked up for you to be in that hypothetical situation.
Seriously, like, as a professional engineer, I find the premise of the trolley problem offensive. Cause like, so many safety regulations have been violated that it's just... insane.
"But, Cody, what if there was an emergency braking system, and it failed?"
Failure to perform regular maintenance and inspection. So, it's still someone else's fault.
"What if maintenance and inspections were done correctly, and it still failed?"
Some engineer somewhere failed to design a failsafe with the necessary redundancies. Again, it's someone else's fault.
"What about sabotage?"
The saboteur is obviously to blame.
"What if it's just a freak accident?"
Once again there's that engineer failing to place redundancies.
"What if it was just an act of God, and the engineer and everyone else did everything right?"
Then God is to blame. Duh. Not sure why this is so hard to get.
Any accident investigator will tell you that an accident is caused by a chain of incidents, and there were always several places the disaster could have been stopped.
Trolley problems are just philosophers being cruel to their audiences.
I would look at whoever is tying people to trolley tracks. That might be the issue right there.
Gotta love how people are so ready to hold themselves to a position of moral and intellectual superiority that they try to invent new options or explanations to a deliberately simplified scenario that has nothing to do any of the things people are arguing about
If you’re getting to the point where the physical mechanics of a scenario posed by high level moral philosophy have any bearing at all on the discussion you’ve not only missed the point but you’ve skipped completely over into arguing about something else entirely unrelated.
The trolley problem isn’t even about “the 1 vs the 5” in terms of “one vs many” That’s not the point. The thought experiment in its true form already supposes full damn well that saving the majority of people is morally superior if there are no conditions or caveats. The original problem also already posits that the creation of the situation is an accident and out of the hands of the person at the lever.
The entire point that allows the experiment to have any moral value at all is the starting presumption that the impetus of the accident is not in any way the driver’s responsibility.
The point of the trolley problem is is the ethical ramifications of Action vs Inaction. It’s about whether you, personally, as a moral human person, are better off involving yourself morally by interacting with this tragedy, or if you are morally superior for keeping your hands clean of the accident that is not your fault.
Is your own singular moral compass cleaner for your personal actions causing the death of 1 person that would not have died if not for you, but in the process saving 5? Or does it make you a more moral person for doing nothing at all. You are not personally responsible for any deaths except through inaction. You changed nothing, and are simply an observer to a larger tragedy that may have been lesser with more involvement?
It’s not about the grand scale, or how many people are alive, or the one vs the many. It’s always been about how the person at the lever feels about the event afterwards.
My friend, that's an excellent explanation of the original intent of the trolley problem, so I'm gonna let it slide that you are incapable of discerning a joke when you see it.
You know I was responding as much to half the people in the comments so much as your initial reply, but since you’re so keen to respond smartly with self satisfied superiority again I’ll do so in turn.
If you have to constantly troll your notes and repeatedly insist to everyone that doesn’t agree with you that it was Just A Prank Bro and Really It’s Them Who Doesn’t Understand, then no one has been reading it as joke, and if it doesn’t hold up to serious scrutiny either...
Then what you insist you told was a really a bad joke and you’re just getting booed off the stage.
Tips for a newbie fanfiction writer?
You can’t improve without writing.
Always have back up of your stuff.
Distraction-free software that helps you write do exist.
Pasting your text from google docs onto AO3 will make it look funny.
There’s a script☆ that solves that problem.
Feedback (or the lack thereof) is never what you expect.
Learn to write for yourself in the first place.
Not everything you write will be the best fic ever™.
You can’t control how people react to your stuff.
No self-deprecation. Seriously.
A good summary attracts people. (No “I suck at summaries” there!)
Punctuation and structure are so important.
Don’t be afraid of using a character’s name. That’s why they have one.
Get a beta reader if you can.
It’s YOUR story and only you can tell it.
DO write that 9861th coffee shop AU for your fandom.
Anything is an AU.
Researching is good but don’t let it keep you from writing.
Tag your stuff accordingly.
Advice you see around aren’t supreme rules set in stone.
You’ll learn more about your style as you go.
Don’t compare your writing to others’. Especially “famous” fic writers.
Perfection doesn’t exist. Stop striving for it and just write.
A rough draft is better than NO story.
It’s okay to move on from an unfinished work to a new one.
It’s okay to not write 200K words in an hour.
Any length of writing is okay. Just focus on telling YOUR story.
Slumps and writer block are common.
You can always improve your writing if you want to.
Read lots and notice what you like in other people’s writing.
If you’re not having fun take a step back.
Set up a sideblog for writing on tumblr.
Tag your stuff accordingly. (both on AO3 and tumblr)
Follow spaces for fanfic discussions like @ao3commentoftheday
There’s no consensus about ANYTHING regarding fanfiction.
You can’t please everyone but you can please yourself.
Some people out there are rude and can’t be reasoned with.
Fanfiction is NOT your job. Don’t feel guilty for “not updating in months”.
Publish your stuff because you want to share it.
Everybody write crappy fics. Write yours.
Game soundtracks (instrumental) are great to play while writing.
There’s always somebody out there waiting for your fic.
Many times you won’t hear but they exist.
Have fun. Indulge yourself. Treat yo self.
Writing is the best thing but also the worst.
Jot down those ideas. You won’t “remember later”. Seriously you won’t.
Inspiration often hits you when you CAN’T write.
It also often leaves when you can write.
Everybody hates and loves writing. That’s the life of a writer for ya.
Even your fave fic writer can feel ehh about the fic of theirs you LOVE.
Starting from the middle or the end IS a thing.
Listen to Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten. She knows what’s up.
For anyone who is curious- this is Girls Und Panzer; it’s Japan’s usual anime shtick of combining “X niche interest” with cute girls.
In this case WW2 tanks.
The cute girls aspect is not as creepy as you’d expect so it’s easy enough to ignore; what you’re left with is a show about a crazy tank combat sport.
This one is the most “because anime” tank battles from the show; from the movie Girls Und Panzer Der Film. It’s bat-shit insane but just so much fun.
The premise of this series is set in a world where Sensha-do (aka Tankery) is a martial arts sport with a long tradition of being feminine and ladylike. The aim of the game is to shoot the opposing team’s tanks and disable them; their on board computer registers when a tank has suffered enough damage and a white flag pops out of a small hatch on the uppermost surface to show the tank is out of the match. They use live rounds but the inside of the tank is lined with carbon and there’s emphasis on participant safety and sportsmanship.
“People rarely get hit during matches” famous words of tank commander sitting outside her tank with shells detonating all around her, with giant pieces of stone and other debris being tossed into the air all around from the explosions.
“it’ll be fine”
No one ever gets hurt so you stop caring after an episode or two and just enjoy the action.
Most school teams have a theme and only use tanks from a specific country; Japan, Germany, Great Briton, USA ETC… and they tend to act like stereotypical versions of the country their school represents.
The Great British team keep a stiff upper lip and like tea.
The German team like rules and driving in formation.
The Italian team are more interested in food.
You could say it’s racist but the Japanese team have only one tactic: banzai charge at the opposing team head on without thinking- and lose the match right away.
So no one is safe.
The main character’s team are so poor they can’t afford to have a theme and have to make do with what they got, going to battle with a random assortment of vehicles from all different countries. Usually outnumbered 2:1 if not more… And in this case, outgunned by a Morser Karl siege mortar.
Nothing a 16 tonne Hetzer ramping off a Carro Veloce can’t fix.
(because anime).
If you’re stuck at home during quarantine and want something fun to watch and don’t mind venturing into the “weeb zone” you can find Girls Und Panzer on Netflix. If you like it, grab it on bluray from Sentai Filmworks (shameless plug that I’m not ashamed of). Though if you live in Australia or New Zealand only the series is released locally (by Hanabee); you’ll have to get the OVA and the Movie from USA.
EDIT: I don’t know the name of the genius who created this fanart but they are an master creative wizard without compare.

#I feel like we're all conditioned to give these corporatized apologies or statements for every interaction#because when you talk like a regular fucking person online it's much more easily misinterpreted by people who just want to be pissed off#you know the Tweet that's like “I like pancakes” “so you hate waffles?” “no bitch that's a whole new sentence what are you talking about”#corporate apologies and statements read the way they do because they're intentionally structured to prevent ambiguity or misunderstanding#while also conveying a certain tone that will hopefully prevent people from getting mad while they read it#and when we have to buffer everything we say with conditional statements to prevent some rando from ripping us apart over a perceived slight#everything we say starts to sound sanitized and corporate (x)
Reeducating myself on how to say “You are willfully misinterpreting me so this conversation is over.”
Recently watched a youtube video about tips for trying to buy sustainable and high quality textiles and the narrator started with several minutes of "I am not shaming anyone for having to buy fast fashion, no ethical consumption under capitalism etc., these are just some tips for if you have the means and desire to source these sorts of fabrics, I know being able to buy sustainable things is a privilege --" and the fact that that disclaimer is necessary, that we live in a culture so ready to read anything in bad faith that providing tips for something is assumed to be shaming people for doing anything else unless you do the "you're valid too! <3" speech at the start, made me want to eat my own face.
It's also because people are too sensitive now and can't handle criticism of any kind
It's the age where we fought so hard to dismantle shame.
Yet again, we are shaming each other constantly and probably are ashamed ourselves to the maximum.
No wonder people are flipping out more and more.
I'm like if a chivalrous knight kissed a fair maiden's hand and said "my lady, I fight for you" and then walked off and immediately tripped over his own armor and fell on the ground
#funny#if the lady's a keeper she would make a funny comment to dissipate the tension#'my good knight though I admire your skills you have no need to fight the whole earth for my sake'
This would be amazing.
"As I was saying, milady," he springs to his feet, declaring proudly, "I worship the very ground you - " before tripping again.
