The largest employer in the seat of global imperialism is a distribution service. The empire has exported nearly all of its industry to the periphery, creating a situation where it's more profitable to simply move commodities around in the core than it is to actually produce them. Thousands and thousands of distinct commodity types are all put together into massive concrete and steel warehouses built to last no more than 20 years. Each is surrounded by an area of asphalt larger than the warehouse itself where nothing can be allowed to grow or be put to productive use, the only purpose is to let cars sit idle and leak oil into the ground for a time. The asphalt wasteland is patrolled constantly by private police officers, because the company makes so much money it can afford to hire people to literally just sit around and drive aimlessly around the parking lot and look scary, producing nothing, contributing nothing to society. Each warehouse is filled with hundreds of cameras, and for every camera there are 2 giant televisions hanging from the ceiling which only exist to display the output of the cameras to remind everyone in the warehouse that they are being watched at all times. The warehouse is divided into groceries, clothing, pharmacy, home and kitchen, construction and automobile, sports and hunting, toys sections, each of which is individually very large, each of which could individually exist as their own store, all put under one roof simply because it's more profitable to have some of everything in the warehouse even if 99% of it goes unaccessed at any given point simply because in the rare instance when someone does want to access a specific thing from the less popular sections they won't go to another store and therefore any competition will just wither away. And all this is possible only because concrete, steel, and every commodity sold is produced for virtually nothing in the imperial periphery and is sold for 100-1000 times more than its production cost in the imperial core, and it's emblematic of all economic relations under imperialism. A massive machine of global suffering and exploitation exists, running off the literal blood of the third world, so that shitty plastic commodities can be shoved into environmentally ruinous warehouses for a few US dollars
