When you are writing a story and refer to a character by a physical trait, occupation, age, or any other attribute, rather than that character’s name, you are bringing the reader’s attention to that particular attribute. That can be used quite effectively to help your reader to focus on key details with just a few words. However, if the fact that the character is “the blond,” “the magician,” “the older woman,” etc. is not relevant to that moment in the story, this will only distract the reader from the purpose of the scene.
If your only reason for referring to a character this way is to avoid using his or her name or a pronoun too much, don’t do it. You’re fixing a problem that actually isn’t one. Just go ahead and use the name or pronoun again. It’ll be good.
Someone finally spelled out the REASON for using epithets, and the reasons NOT to.
In addition to that:
If the character you are referring to in such a way is THE VIEWPOINT CHARACTER, likewise, don’t do it. I.e. if you’re writing in third person but the narration is through their eyes, or what is also called “third person deep POV”. If the narration is filtered through the character’s perception, then a very external, impersonal description will be jarring. It’s the same, and just as bad, as writing “My bright blue eyes returned his gaze” in first person.
Furthermore,
if the story is actually told through the eyes of one particular viewpoint character even though it’s in the third person, and in their voice, as is very often the case, then you shouldn’t refer to the characters in ways that character wouldn’t.
In other words, if the third-person narrator is Harry Potter, when Dumbledore appears, it says “Dumbledore appears”, not “Albus appears”. Bucky Barnes would think of Steve Rogers as “Steve”, where another character might think of him as “Cap”. Chekov might think of Kirk as “the captain”, but Bones thinks of him as “Jim”.
Now, there are real situations where you, I, or anybody might think of another person as “the other man”, “the taller man”, or “the doctor”: usually when you don’t know their names, like when there are two tap-dancers and a ballerina in a routine and one of the men lifts the ballerina and then she reaches out and grabs the other man’s hand; or when there was a group of people talking at the hospital and they all worked there, but the doctor was the one who told them what to do. These are all perfectly natural and normal. Similarly, sometimes I think of my GP as “the doctor” even though I know her name, or one of my coworkers as “the taller man” even though I know his. But I definitely never think of my long-term life partner as “the green-eyed woman” or one of my best friends as “the taller person” or anything like that. It’s not a sensible adjective for your brain to choose in that situation - it’s too impersonal for someone you’re so intimately acquainted with. Also, even if someone was having a one night stand or a drunken hookup with a stranger, they probably wouldn’t think of that person as “the other man”: you only think of ‘other’ when you’re distinguishing two things and you don’t have to go to any special effort to distinguish your partner from yourself to yourself.
This is something that I pretty consistently have to advise for those I beta edit for. (It doesn’t help that I relied on epithets a lot in the earlier sections of my main fic because I was getting into the swing of things.) I am reblogging this so fanfic writers can use this as a reference.
A good rule of thumb: a character’s familiarity with another character decreases the need for an epithet (and most times you really don’t need one at all).

So I work at a video game store in a mall and across the hall from us is this really nice suit shop. One day one of the guys came in an asked if they could use our microwave (the store they used to go to closed down) and we bargined for use of their bathroom in return since the mall bathrooms are like a 5 min trek.
So for like three months now we just have these men in really nice suits come in and talk while using our microwave and teach them about nerdy shit? Then I, the goblin king in various shitty tee shirts and paint stained pants, walk into their super expensive store and just get greeted with “Yo dude what’s good?” and talk about the pains of steaming silken dress shirts properly and it’s my favorite business interaction every day
A new jewelry store opened up right next to our store and when I used the bathroom today we were talking about it. I hate it on principle (they flooded our systems closet during building) and immediately both Suit Guys™ working went on mini rants. “Their suits are baggy as hell, I wouldn’t trust them to sell me a $9,000 ring when they can’t get a fitted jacket. They look so unprofessional, ” and “I saw one of the dude’s wearing a teal shirt. It’s fall, and you go with teal? At least get a color to match your store if you’re gonna ignore the seasons like that, Christ, but teal is awful.”

I feel the need to add a story to this? My co-worker brought his longboard to work, and one of the suit guys reminisced on how he used to ride pretty often. So Co-Worker and I were like, “Dude, go give it a spin, who cares, this mall is huge.” He was nervous about it because there are mall cops on segways everywhere (with helmets, like bruh, full on Paul Blart) and he was worried he was gonna get caught, and eventually we made a bet that he could ride down to Macy’s and back (it’s like a straight shot). So dead ass, this man hung up his jacket, took a running start, and zipped down the hallway with his tie in the breeze.
He evaded the mall cops and claimed that was, “One of the biggest rushes he’s ever felt.”

if you are in high school and you follow me idc if you learn nothing else from me, but learn this: do not join the fucking military. they will promise you all sorts of things in exchange for joining their muder-system for a few years. do not listen to them. you won’t find a sense of purpose, you won’t find an adventure, you might not even get the money they promise you for college. if you survive, you’ll come back with blood on your hands, feeling just as aimless as before except knowing you’re a killer. the government will drop you like hot potatoes the second you are not useful to them, and you will be on your own with nothing but some ptsd and a more intimate understanding of the phrase “blood for oil.”

It’s a reminder of the things STOLEN from these families without proper reimbursement. There’s a lot of stories about how the military got out of helping some of these people for really sketchy reasons on the military’s end. There’s a fair amount of people warning how they also didn’t get their money and medical needs met like how they were promised. Not only did these families make sacrifices but they WERE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF AND LEFT TO SUCCUMB TO THEIR TRAUMA.

Yes. A Death that is kind, and patient, and inevitable.
A Death that need not fight against you, that will often fight for you, because why not? It will gather you home eventually. Why not enjoy you first?
A Death that treasures those who fight it most ardently. That loves healers and defenders and survivalists and necromancers and mad scientists and immortal gods. That lets them pour everything they are into fighting it, denying it, adoring every desperate scrap of strength and will and brilliance and raw determination poured out against it. That catches you when your strength is done and all your will and brilliance run out, that gathers you close beneath a warm, dark cloak, and whispers well done, oh child, you were magnificent, well done.
A Death who will not seek to hasten an inevitable end, who will chastise those who seek to hasten it for others in Death’s stead, who will slowly and patiently plot and sow and siphon away from the great monsters of the world. Because who are they to hasten Death’s domain, who are they to deny Death its time and its place, who are they to cut short these vital glories that illuminate it so? Who are they to presume upon its will, that is so much larger and so much longer than theirs?
Who are they to call, and presume that Death, of all beings, should obey?
A Death that is not a hunter but a gatherer, who is always and eternal, who loves you, and can afford to wait. A Death who will fight for you and defend you, who will place its hand upon those who would speed you to its embrace, who has no need to rush you, only to greet you when you call.

Despite everything certain people would have you believe, Death did not despise the living.
They loved them, in fact, treasuring the sight of their festivals and celebrations. Death attended births not just to reap an unfortunate mother (stillborn children had already come into their arms), but to celebrate the arrival of a new life in the world.
It did not matter to them, really, if there were plentiful deaths or few. As long as there was a single living thing in the world, they had a purpose, and did not fear obsolescence as some gods might. Death was not a god; they were an inevitable force of nature.
Death reveled in those who would fight their call, who would fight against their inevitable claim on all living things. They championed the healers and the protectors and the despairing who still found a reason to live another day. They actively worked against the despots and the murderers and those who would seek to send souls to Death before their time.
When they took souls from the world, no matter how violent the moments before, they were gentle. Peace, child, they would murmur. You have finished your journey on the earth. You are safe. Do not fear what lies beyond, for it will not harm you. There were those who swore a punishment lay beyond, but the only punishment that existed in the realm beyond was self-inflicted. The punishment of clarity and surety of truth and the depths of harm one caused others. Some moved beyond it, accepting their flaws and the wrongs they had done. Some didn’t. It was not Death’s doing, what they suffered. The clarity of truth freed many a good person who in life had grappled with guilt, and trapped many an evil one who had suffered no uncertainties.
Cults arose, now and then, to send souls to Death in tribute. They struck these down viciously and without hesitation, aiding and empowering those who would see the cults destroyed. So many healers and protectors acted unknowingly with Death’s blessing, to save all they could. And when those healers and protectors inevitably came into Death’s embrace, they kissed the souls who had fought so hard against them, and praised their efforts. Well done, well done, they cried. You saved so many. You brought more life to so many souls, let them truly appreciate what they had. You enacted my will in the world for so long, and I am most pleased by your efforts.
And sometimes, often, these souls would protest. I did not enact your will, O Death, as I kept souls from your grasp! And Death would embrace these beautiful beings and pour their love upon them.
I do not desire any before their time, Death would say. And I treasure those who would seek to protect others from coming to my arms before it is necessary. I am part of Life, and I, too, rejoice when life is brought into the world, and kept in the world. Thank you.
For Death is simply another guise of Life, and they are well pleased by those who celebrate them in their turn.

1. SHE’S BABY, YOUR HONOR
BADGERMOLE KISSES FOR BABY TOPH!!!!
ONE LITTLE EARTHBENDER BABY FINDING A LOVING AND ACCEPTING FAMILY WITH THE BADGERMOLES!!!!!
2. This moment was one of the first times we saw Toph be open and vulnerable around one of her new friends-- not hiding behind a veil of sarcasm or hardness, just being vulnerable about something you wouldn’t think she’d care about. She’s not a ‘girly girl’ but we saw in this episode that she had a nice time getting pampered with Katara and she liked being treated, even if she had to gradually get comfortable with it. She likes and trusts Katara enough to go along with it, even if she was hesitant (if you think about it the spa was kind of the perfect metaphor for Toph opening up to and taking a leap of faith for Katara because she was putting herself in an inherently vulnerable position: letting people touch her feet, having people touch her, etc.).
But at the end of the day, we see some of her fears validated with the girls making fun of her and it does hurt her. She was crying during this scene. And she was comfortable enough around Katara to be that vulnerable, not just brush it off like it didn’t affect her.
And right here it pays off. Toph’s constantly brushing people off and has put up walls that could rival Ba Sing Se’s, but she takes a leap of faith on these people, a leap of faith on Katara-- and she’s met with love and support and kindness.
And as someone pointed out once, she knows Katara isn’t lying right here.
3. Zero to “SOKKA’S COMING!!” real quick after he’d been gone for like 3 days max

4. Okay I never see this moment talked about which is a shame because it makes my heart hurt every time.
The last time Toph thought she was going to see her mom back in Ba Sing Se, it turned out to be a trap and she got captured and put in a metal box. For all she knows, that’s what her parents really wanted for her. She already felt trapped with them for years, but in a moment when she expected her mom to come see her with open arms, she was locked away instead.
And after all that she’s still angry with them, but she still misses them. She feels guilty over leaving them even after how they treated her. She’s not really dealing with how she feels about it mainly because it’s complicated and she’s rightfully angry with them, but she still loves them. Under all the Greatest Earthbender in the World hardness and through all the walls, Toph’s still sometimes just a kid who wants her mom. Sometimes that’s not an option for one reason or another, and she needs Katara for that reason.
Katara and Toph’s friendship was so important for Toph because even though they bicker and fight, Toph knows she needs Katara. She knows that Katara grounds her and supports her. Katara’s the person Toph will let her guard down in front of without having to be pushed. There’s this unbreakable, important trust she has for Katara-- one of her first friends in her life and someone she knows accepts her and would do anything for her.
