i'm not normally one to make jokes about dialect or accent. but the way that British people pronounce "lieutenant" feels like an in-joke i'm not privy to
Aww, you're feeling lieut out?
I accidentally and legitimately pissed off Paul Bettany at his DragonCon celebrity booth when I pronounced it like an American in the middle of telling him how Master and Commander got my family through Covid.
"We named our house after The Surprise and considered ourselves as its crew with our son as a loo-tenant, and --"
"[Stops signing autograph, deep sigh] Lef-tenant."
"Oh. Yes, sorry. That's --"
"[Hands autograph us] Lef-tenant."
"[Quickly takes autograph, signals to family we should go] Yesthankyouthanksforbeingherebigfans."
We still love the movie, but woof.
