the problem with reading and writing leading to a strong vocabulary is that you tend to know the vibe of words instead of their meanings.
if I used this word in a sentence, would it make sense? absolutely. if you asked me what it meant, could I tell you? absolutely not.
OKAY HOLD UP I KNOW THIS IS A SHITPOST BUT I HAVE A DEGREE IN THIS
Okay, so when we talk about the meaning of words, we are talking about denotation, the dictionary definition of the word, and connotation, the context in which native speakers associate with the word. Connotation is why just looking up synonyms of words doesn't always work.
When teaching this to ESL learners, my favorite example is the word "accumulate." Accumulate means to gather or collect in the dictionary definition of the words. The error in the example is for someone to say "I accumulate things" instead of "I collect things." This sounds wrong, because despite the denotation of the word, the most common connotation of accumulate is that a process done over time and without intent. Water accumulates. Dust accumulates. Money accumulates. But a person cannot say they accumulate things, because that is not a natural usage of the word.
However! As a writer who likes to learn new words, you can now use this knowledge to your advantage. Consider the following sentences:
Bob collected unread books until they piled high around his bed.
Versus
Books accumulated around Bob's bed, turning it into a fortress of unread words.
Both sentences are telling us the same thing - but the latter gives us a bit more insight on Bob, in that he's not intentionally obtaining so many books and not reading them, and that's a far more interesting thing to learn. The more you learn these words in context, the more you can use them to enrich your own writing. Embrace the thesaurus - but pay attention to those example sentences and how those words are actually used!

Introducing It's All in the Eyes
In the eyes of the public, Weiss Schnee is the rich and charismatic board member of the SDC and the Schnee to single-handedly change the entire companies image after her father's arrest. This is how she presents herself to the world even when she had to avoid the press after her father's arrest. In truth though, she is a member of the Solitas Intelligence League serving in the Knights division under the name Glyph. And she is the one behind the arrest of Jacques Schnee as well as many other missions. She's excellent at her job, probably the best Knight that SILs has to offer and yet has been restrained to doing only missions in Solitas. Preventing her from pursuing her own personal mission of finding the person that took her left eye. This all changes when she meets the charismatic BOOK Keeper operative, Crescent, at a masquerade under false pretenses of working with her to reach an objective given to them by their organizations. When the dust of that unfortunate deception of a first meeting settles, they decide to work together to help the other achieve their personal missions. But what will be uncovered the more they work together? And what will become of them?

It's so funny how kids who were only given the "girl" toys seemed to frequently develop the most maniacal imaginations. When I was little and I visited friends or family who were little girls they'd have their Barbies involved in ritual sacrifice or human trafficking. They'd have barbie's evil twin drive ken to suicide by poisoning his horse or some shit.
Action figures set up only the simplest kinds of violence, heroes and villains punching or shooting each other over doomsday plots. When you crave high stakes drama as all children do but your characters are all rich suburban women you kinda have no choice but to get pitch dark I think. The only kinds of villains that logically exist in that setting are just so much sicker and nastier than just doctor octopus or something.
Kids who got hero/villain toys didn’t necessarily need to be creative to have a conflict in their games, they often would be but it isn’t inherently a barrier. Kids who only got chill fun times best friends toys don’t have any natural conflict between the characters those toys represent so if they want conflict, and let’s face it the conflict is what makes the play engaging and fun, they need to be creative and since there’s no natural starting point for them they can not only go anywhere but start anywhere with it so naturally Barbie is going to be hiking and get trapped in a crevasse and mauled by animals and the Barbie’s are going to stage a coup to dethrone their god which is also a giant baby doll and if you try to get them to play spa it’s going to end with one of the Barbie’s being betrayed and entombed in a dried out mud bath and you’ll still wonder 20 years later as you type a tumblr post if you ever remembered to dig her up or if she’s still in the back yard of that old house
