Campaigners urged the Government to make 20mph zones ‘the norm’ in urban areas and villages - insisting their widespread roll-out has reached a ‘tipping point’. But the AA said it was wrong to impose 20mph limits ‘by diktat’ and that the zones - which it broadly backs - should only be introduced where they carry clear public support. The row come as road safety group Brake today takes its ‘GO 20’ campaign to Parliament and calls on ministers and MPs to support the introduction of 20mph as the ‘default’ urban speed limit. Brake has released new figures suggesting nearly eight out of ten (78 per cent) of people think 20mph should be the ‘default’ limit around schools, in residential streets, villages, town and city centres. And just as many (81 per cent) think traffic travels too fast on local roads, according to the poll by Brake and Allianz Insurance. But the AA said it strongly opposed the idea of blanket imposition of 20mph zones without the consent and support of local residents. It supported lowering the limit from 30mph to 20mph where local residents backed the idea - including outside schools, colleges and hospitals. 2014 Mini review

Forget the 2014 BMW Mini for a moment, and go back to 1959 for the launch of the original, then called the Austin Seven. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, this extraordinary £497, 848cc four-seat machine captured hearts like few others. More than 1.5 million were sold in the UK between 1959 and 2004, four years after it had ceased production. As this is the third-generation of BMW's Mini, we should also go to 1969 for the launch of the Mark III version of the original Mini, where you might note that some of the whimsy had worn off. Bigger doors with hidden hinges and wind-up windows lacked charm and the hinged rear number plate and tiny lamp on the end of the wand-like indicator stalk had gone AWOL. I expected a similar reversion to bland for the new BMW Mini Mark III; dialled-back specification, a cost-saving cabin, more weight and bulk along with thigh-deep marketing waffle. Falkirk pubs in the running for Best Bar award

Two Falkirk licensed premises Behind the Wall, Voodoo Lounge and City nightclub are in the running for a Best Bar None Scotland national award. Both have already received gold accreditation through the scheme which encourages safety, responsible drinking and customer care. Premises across Scotland sign up for the initiative to ensure residents and visitors alike can enjoy the safest and best pubs in their area. Run by the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, best Bar None awards pubs, bars, nightclubs and specialist entertainment venues bronze, silver and gold awards for the standards they adopt. Behind the Wall has made the shortlist in the independent pub category, Voodoo Lounge in the bar section, while City is in the nightclub category. Now they will be hoping to be named champions at the ceremony in Glasgow next Thursday, March 27. Mandy Haeburn-Little, director of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, said “The scheme has the safety of consumers at its heart and the number of premises taking part from all areas of Scotland this year is very encouraging.” It has the backing of the Scottish Government, police, fire and licensed trade. Larbert to experience water disruption

Residents in Larbert are being advised that their water system will be briefly interrupted on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as engineers fix a burst water pipe in the town's Main Street. The work will be performed from about 10 p.m. on March 11 till around 6 a.m. the following morning. This will result in the momentary loss of typical water materials to about 200 homes in Larbert, including Main Street, Dundarroch Street, East Crawford Street, Russell Hill Court, Sir John Graham Court, St George's Court, Falkirk Road, Stirling Road and Union Place. When typical the usual supply is brought back, homeowners are also most likely to experience tarnished water. In addition, about 5500 homes in Stenhousemuir and Carronshore are also anticipated to be impacted by low water pressure and discolored water during this work. Falkirk district delivers the goods

You’ve everything you could possibly want on your doorstep ... and supporting local town centres will keep things that way. That’s the view of council leader Craig Martin, who believes Falkirk district offers quality and variety when it comes to shops, restaurants, bars and leisure facilities. Backing The Falkirk Herald’s new Shop Local, Eat Local, Play Local initiative, he encouraged residents to make use of all that is on offer. He said “It is very important that people get behind local businesses who are providing a fabulous variety for shoppers and those looking to spend their leisure time in their own community. “Falkirk has so much to offer, as does Bo’ness, Grangemouth, Denny and Stenhousemuir, and I don’t think there is any need to travel outwith the district, when there is so much close by.” Councillor Martin said the local authority had put a lot of resources into transforming the look of town centres as well as supporting businesses. He added “The diversity of places in Falkirk district is second-to-none and offers things for all ages. Many of the businesses now in our town centres are long-established which shows that the support is there and we have to ensure it continues. “I welcome any initiative which encourages people to shop, eat and spend their leisure time locally.
