Hi Cassie! I have a question about Kel - will we ever learn about Kel’s family or is it not the important?

Ooh, Sword Catcher question, love that.

So I understand why people are curious about Kel's family—fantasy is full of hidden lineages and secret inheritances, and I love those stories too — obviously! They're mythically powerful for a reason.

But one of the things I wanted to explore with Kel is the opposite idea: that where you come from isn't the most important thing about you. Throughout Sword Catcher we meet people with ancient names, noble blood, and immense privilege, and we see that none of those things automatically make someone worthy or good. Most of them are pretty crappy really, as privilege has spoiled them.

I wanted Kel's story to stand in contrast to Conor, who is so constrained by what he was born to be and the obligations of his lineage. I wanted Kel to have free choice as well as a found family that makes a dependence on finding his blood parents not unimportant, but less pressing.

That doesn't mean Kel is totally uninterested; he'd probably want to know if the information was on offer. But he doesn't think about it all that much and he isn't searching — which might have been different if Conor hadn't given him a kind of family — and if he did search, I think it would signal that his lineage is important to the story. But it isn't really — I made a choice not to make his worth or his destiny about a secret ancestry. I wanted Kel's story to rest on the idea that who he is comes from the life he lives and the choices he makes, not from a revelation about where he came from.

For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary.
