~End of internship at Fitch~
Last Day At Fitch - Day 117
Which also happens to be our Diwali celebration! Whaaa traditional?! I had to literally go and buy a kurta the day before since I never wear traditional. But it was a good decision. This would have to be the most chill day in 4 months. Exactly on the day I’m leaving. What could be better? We had a diwali lunch where they ordered Biryani and other dishes from outside and all of us ate together. I got them some homemade sweets as a thank you and everyone loved them. Thanks Mom! There was some small work I had to finish up, not much else. Other than some, most of us were ready to leave right after lunch.
They did a small farewell for me after a few hours. I had to give the obligatory farewell and thank you speech and knowing me I was awkward as all hell. THEN THEY GAVE ME CUTE GIFTS AW YISS. I got a card in which all of them wrote a little message. As seen in the image above, on the front of the card my beautiful face is photoshopped on an anime chraracter called Recca.. umm cause my email id is recca and they started calling me that and it was one of the nicknames that stuck..... okay nevermind that’s not important. But it was pretty funny. The salad because that’s all I ever ate and the pizza because that’s all I ever wanted to eat. ANYWAYS. Other than that they gave me some pretty awesome stationary from Muji. Other than that like everyone else I got some dryfruits and brownies as a Diwali gift. YAY SO MANY GIFTS.
It’s a tradition to smash cake or other disgusting food on peoples faces during their farewell/ birthday. I was dreading it since forever and thankfully I was saved. They didn’t get cake and instead I cut 4 brownies (which saved me from the facial from hell oh yeah) After that I hugged some people goodbye and the rest of us went to the bar to celebrate. Lucky day cause they didn’t even check ID’s. Do 5 shots they said. It’ll be fun, they said. THEY WERE WRONG. Nah we had a good time and I was pretty much convinced I was going to die the next day but I still had a good time. I will miss these guys a lot. I love them. But since college is so close I’ll see them around.
4 Months are finally over. Much needed holiday here I come. All in all it was a good experience and yeah a lot of the work I got I didn’t enjoy but I guess that’s a part of being in a big firm like Fitch. There’s different types of clients that need different kinds of work. There’s work I did enjoy too and hopefully I can see it in the market soon. It’s a fun environment with friendly people. The Fitch team is separated into 2D designers, 3D designers, architects, strategy team, etc. And these people form smaller groups for each client. They also have huge clients that have multiple projects each year. The whole structure of work they follow and the way they coordinate was new to me since we don’t work like this in college and I got to do a lot more than just 2d design so it was a good learning experience. Thanks for having me <3
Last Month at Fitch - Day 101 to 116
I have done it again. Not updated the blog in time so now I hardly remember everything I did. In summary, most of the major work these few weeks was for Idea and little bit for Munch. Other than that, the rest was simply collecting reference images and doing some research. For Idea I finally completed a sales aid design that the client is happy with. This was one thing I had to finish before leaving. Hopefully, soon, it’ll be made and put up in every Idea store. For Nestle Munch I just had to create an illustrative front for a box that would appeal to the “action movie” loving youth. Which I apparently did a good job at. I didn’t do any work for Nataraj other than make some mockups. After the last presentation, my senior made changes and they had another one but the client still isn’t fully sold. I was hoping this project would be wrapped up before I left since it was started just as I joined. But oh well, hopefully they will finalize it soon. Yeah, other than that everything else was just helping people out with research and crafting. Had to finish all the projects and upload all my files on the server. Work wise that’s all there is.
In other news I finally went for pizza with work friends to celebrate and boy was it gooood. Eating that after months of only salad makes it so much better. Hung out with the office peeps, had fun. I guess this month was more chilled out than the rest.
Work frands
Me after making bad work for a bad client:
Day 71 to Day 100
I haven’t updated the blog in 3 or 4 weeks and above are gifs explaining why
I can’t be bothered to try to remember each an every day when I can’t even remember what happened in the week. I’ll try to sum up every single thing in one big post. Hopefully I remember all of it.
All the work that I’ve done in the past few weeks and am doing currently:
Idea: Where do I start. I literally do so much for these guys. I’m not getting paid enough for dealing with shit work and doing so much of it. I’ve made logos, icons and posters for a movie app, as well as the same for a music app. Along with some icons and posters for a gaming app. I made a range of leaflets for “premium” Idea customers ranging from Silver to Titanium. I made illustrated emailer options for Navratri, and I’m currently working on designing a sales kit and sales aid from scratch completely on my own. No I’m not enjoying it whatsoever.
Nestle: Made a few festive Vishu packs for Munch which actually turned out to be quite cool looking. We sent those out and then I worked on two comic strip illustrations for the back of a box of Munch Nuts. (A pretty decent chocolate)
I’m currently working on Nestle Alpino trying to create a creative POS that reflects the brand. So far I’ve done some intensive research and ideation. Still have to come up with something solid that can be approved.
American Club: I made a mnemonic language for a cheap cigarette brand called American Club. Quite an interesting exercise which I finished quite fast.
Nataraj: The best brand that I’ve been working on since the start, I made a very cool animation (If I say so myself) showing the rebranding and elements of the packaging and how it all works together. Last friday we went for a presentation. Oh wait. I mean. My seniors sneaked me in for it (Apparently company policy doesn’t allow interns to attend presentations or some shit) so they told me to fake being sick and leave early, which I did. And I joined them for the presentation. I was supposed to act like I don’t even exist and basically just observe. MY GOD WAS IT FRUSTRATING. The clients were apparently what nice clients are like. I really dread client presentations if that’s the case. All in all, it actually wasn’t too bad and they asked for a few changes, but the way they shat on some ideas and spoke like they know so much about design, it was cringeworthy and frustrating. I tried really hard to keep quiet. Hopefully they agree to the designs in the next presentation, before I leave.
In other news, I’m leaving this month! Hurray! I honestly can’t wait to stop doing shitty work and go back to college and produce something worthwhile. The people are the only thing I’ll miss about Fitch. The company has a big name but the clients and work really isn’t very good. This is not just my opinion, but also people I work with who will be leaving soon as well. Plus the payment is really bad, and I deserve a lot more for all the work I’ve been doing. I don’t think I’d ever want to work here again, but I would like to work with some of the people, because they are a delight.
Another interesting “side assignment” was to make fake ID’s for those of us underage, so that we could get in a bar. That includes me and about 3 other people. Best work I’ve done so far as some would say. (Sadly the ID’s I made for other people worked, but my own didn’t, because my luck sucks, but I got in somehow anyways). I’ve gone out a lot with some or most of the office peeps in the past weeks and come home late and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I’ve made some strong bonds here and that’s the only connection I’ll have with Fitch once I leave.
Most of my friends are back from their internships! I’m so happy. Work absolutely sucks but I’ve been enjoying my weekends and holidays a lot more. I finally have plans! *Tears of joy* I’ve been having the best time since last week till today. Long weekend, meeting friends, having fun. Back to work tomorrow. Kill me. ALSO I GOT TOP TEN IN POSTER 4 TOMORROW! I’m so happy. In 4 months this is the first few weeks I’m really really happy. Just about two weeks more and I’ll be done with work. I think I’ve covered everything. If I forgot something, I’ll add it in later. Thanks for reading if you actually did. Peace.
We do have an amazing view of the city.
(I know it’s vertical shut up)
Day 65 to 68
Pictures above: A wooden crocodile eating a leather sandwich for no particular reason and my view from where I sit for lunch
Even though my senior was back, tuesday was pretty pointless as well. Aside from some small work of finding a good font for a logo, I didn’t do much the whole day. At this point I was getting fed-up of work and was super unhappy coming there all the way from home pointlessly and wasting my time. I guess I expected to be more involved and busy with cool designs. But as an intern in a big firm, that will hardly ever happen.
Wednesday, I finally received some new work. But oh no. It was Idea. The most horrid clients on the planet. I had to make some logo options for some movie entertainment app they were launching. And as most Idea briefs, it was last minute. A few other designers were also working on the same. I saw what they had done so far, and to be honest, they were horrible. The problem with Idea is that they will ask for the design to be tweaked any way they want, and have ideas of their own that they want executed. And Fitch, without arguing too much, will do everything they say. That’s the biggest problem Idea has that’s holding it back in design. And Fitch as well for doing what the client wants and not making good design. I too, of course had to follow the strict guidelines Idea and my seniors told me to follow. End of the day I had a few logos which I sent in.
Thursday, Idea replied and they liked one of my logos out of the deck we sent, and asked for many very specific changes as always. These change requests kept coming in till friday. The logos looked so stupid that it was eating away at my soul as a designer. Why am I being asked to make awful design. If I did the same in college I might get a D grade or barely manage a C. Oh well. In other work I had some lame stuff from Nestle Munch, like making a text logo and making a festive box. Bleh.
Friday was mainly making changes in the idea logo and sketching when i’m bored. Someone from London had come down to work with us. He was from a company that Fitch bought and gave us a presentation about the kind of digital work they do. It was really interesting because they use virtual reality devices to work on interiors and make really interesting human interaction designs. By the time the presentation ended, work time was up. We got out the beers and chilled in the balcony with an amazing view. It’s always fun letting loose with these people. Since, I don’t talk much cause of my social awkwardness, it takes a while to make friends. But i’m getting better at it and I’ve made some friends here already. As I’m very used to at this point, they are still very surprised that I’m 19 and are jealous that I didn’t have to go to college. It was fun talking to them. As much as I can’t wait for work to end, I will definitely miss them.
Best weekend ever
Got to meet my friends after so long! Finally spent a weekend out of the house, having fun.
Also, I've finished two months at Fitch.
Day 57 to 61
Worst. Week. Ever.
Monday I asked one of my other senior designers for work. I was given the work to find images of mrf tires as well as the names, qualities, sizes and comparisons and make a big chart with everything. Thankfully I found a PDF available on the internet with everything I wanted. Other than this I had no other work so I whiled away time. I had no work on Tuesday either. Absolute waste of a day. Most of it I spent working on my grand project. I took Wednesday off since there was no work and worked on my grand project again. Thursday I was back in office with absolutely no work again so I spent all day making this photoshop art that I’ve posted. Today is Friday and I’m still sitting here with nothing to do, so I figured I’d update the blog finally. I’m waiting for my senior to come back so I get actual work and don’t just pointlessly come to office to waste my time. I'm so happy that Monday is a holiday. I'm meeting my friends this weekend so that's the only positive thing about this week.

Day 50 to 54
I’m late to update this again. And there’s not much to write. So from now on I’ll just do week updates summarizing everything and only do day updates if there’s anything interesting. Basically Monday whiled away in doing small work (fixing up the presentation and such) and the Nataraj presentation was on Tuesday. I asked if I could go along, hoping to see them pitch to the client, but they blatantly said no. I guess they don’t take interns to presentation. Wednesday I was told that the client loved everything other than the pack for the classic range of pencils. Because they’re stupid and don’t understand design. Simple, bold and striking didn’t work for them so now we have to try something along the lines of playful and fun. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday went in trying to come up with ideas and looking for references for what we could go with. I made a few designs, but we still have to wait for Brendan to talk to them about the classic range. He was pissed that they didn't understand why it was good. Oh well, all we can do is wait. My senior and Brendan are both out of town next week, so I basically will have no work. Sigh. Hey we went for sushi this friday and it was pretty damn good. There’s something interesting. That’s all.
Weekend gifs are still a thing
Day 44 to Day 47
Basically I was too late to update the blog and don’t remember what happened on each day (not much happened anyways) so i’ll summarize the entire week. We showed our printed designs to Brendan on monday. And well, he pretty much didn’t like a lot of things. He said the ranges of Nataraj pencils should look different from each other and yet all over belong in the same family. We didn’t achieve that yet and had to spend time working on the brand architecture and defining what each range shows. After working on the designs from monday to wednesday, we just had to add some ideas and definitions to the presentation on thursday, and we were pretty much done. We showed Brendan the presentation on friday, AND HE LIKED IT. We got it. Finally. This will be presented to the client on tuesday!
Much needed long weekend where while everyone else is busy going out of town, I will stay in my room, play videogames and binge watch Stranger Things like a lazy slob.
Day 40 - Friday
After yesterday’s discussion I had a good idea of what is to be done so I designed a bunch of packs with the new style and... it looks good! I’m really happy with how this is turning out and could definitely see them use it. Worked hard on it all day and then relaxed for a while. We’ll see if this works on tuesday when we have another group discussion. Also did some small photography work. Oh yeah this is also the best friday. Why? CAUSE MONDAY IS A HOLIDAY AND ITS A LONG WEEKEND. YES.
#REPRESENT
Day 39 - Thursday
Used two different illustration styles for one of the themed nataraj packs. Senior did a few of her own. We printed all the designs and discussion with Brendan. Got a good idea of what exactly we can do. This is a great project because of the amount of freedom the client is giving us. It’s so rare. I’m lucky to be able to work on it. We can design any pack we want, suggest more, design every single pencil. Literally anything we want. It’s exciting! I’m finally pumped about this project. I mostly worked on it all day and did some other small photoshop work.
