I had a blind professor, last semester, and I swung through his office to make up an exam. It was a while before I knew he was in there because he was sitting with the lights off. I finally went in, apologized, and took the exam by the light of a nearby window (which was fine). Forty-five minutes into dead silence he panicked and yelled in this booming voiced, “WAIT, YOU CAN SEE!!!” before diving across his desk to turn on the lights. I’m sure he was embarrassed but I thought it was endearing and it highlighted a large aspect of disabled life that I hadn’t previously considered.

Sort of relatedly I once had professor who was deaf, but she had learned to read lips and speak so she could communicate easily with hearing people who didn’t know sign language. One day she had gotten off topic and was talking a little about her personal life, so that one of the students said “Oh, I know, I grew up in Brooklyn too.” 

She stared at him for a long time and then said “How do you know I’m from Brooklyn?”

And he said “You have a Brooklyn accent.”

She said “I do?” and the whole class nodded, and then she burst out laughing and said “I had no idea!  The school where I learned to speak was in Brooklyn.  I learned by moving my mouth and tongue the way my teachers did.  So I guess it makes sense that I have their accent, I just never thought about it.”

Yes, thats why. Also so you can cook food in them in the oven or on an open fire without damage.

Always wipe clean with a wet rag or sponge after cooking, minimize scrubbing, simmer water in the pan to soften really stuck bits. Then dry fully and put just a smidge of your oil/fat of choice on it before putting the pan away. And liberally re-season (the coating with oil/fat and baking at 400 part) as needed if you notice things sticking more!

These pans will last multiple lifetimes, as evidenced by the video above.

Storytime: when I was in my early twenties, I moved to a country whose language was not my own. I did have a reasonable grasp of it, but I clearly lacked a lot of vocabulary, and my accent wasn’t amazing. There was a small food shop down from my apartment, and the owner noticed quickly that I struggled with the names of foods. From that point on, every time I went and he checked out my bags, he did it slowly and pointing out loud every item he checked. “One carrot, two apples, a bag of pasta…” I can never thank him enough for how much I learnt from such a small gesture.

Then listen to the accent more often if you’re going to be interacting with people that use that accent! I used to not be able to understand Indian accents, but then several people with Indian accents became relevant to my life. So I talked more often with the people with those accents I was going to be interacting with so I could just be used to it. And it took such little effort. I didn’t even have to do anything besides listen because it’s that easy. It took up like three hours of my time, tops.

And if you’re not interacting with people that have that accent, why do you care?
