Renegades - X Ambassadors
âThat cheeky old man⊠That mistletoe better trap him too.â
âYet we all know it wonât because he charmed it himself. Is all really fair in love and kisses under the mistletoe if everyone doesnât have an equal chance of getting caught?â
âDid you hear that?â
â--- The particular sound of yelling mistletoe? Maybe, but that may be the fact that I know itâs bound to happen at some point. What is it youâre hearing, Pandora?â
Are you kidding me? Itâs Christmas time already? Again?
I swear to Merlin if I end up being chased around by a squad of demon elves again I will throw such a fit itâll make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Tim Allen.Â
âOh, come on, they just thought you needed some Christmas cheer. Which you still do, but thatâs beside the point. Are you going to Slughornâs party tomorrow?â
âI do love Christmas carols, but someone ought to tell poor Cadogan that heâs not quite catching onto the same songs as the other portraits. Though his and Anne Boleynâs rendition of Silent Night was definitely something.â
âSo what youâre saying is you officially give up on trying to stop me from kissing you? âCause Iâm down for that.â
ââŠ.yeah, still not feeling History of Magic, Evans.â
âI think you have enough self-restraint to do that yourself, Potter.â
âIâm about as interested in the Goblin Rebellions as you, but we still have to do this project. Come on, letâs see if we can find another book.â
âItâs a learning curve; they need to learn how to be strong in the face of pressure, and itâs our job to help them. Do you not have such standards in Gryffindor?â
âWe prefer to approach it in a less offensive way, but to each their own, I suppose. Strength isnât a learning curve, Narcissa, just because theyâre scared or worried doesnât make them any less strong.â
âA good surprise, you say? Well, then, Iâm going to go with the previously unmentioned option Dâ midnight fairy hunting in the gardens.â
âSounds like the perfect choice, actually, Iâm always up for finding some fairies. Lead the way, Mr. Dearborn.â
âExcuse me, Miss Evans, but⊠What business is it of yours how I talk to people in my own House?â
âBeing in your house doesnât make them your personal punching bag, Miss Black. When you use a word as tasteless and tactless as that to describe other witches and wizards in this castle, it becomes my business.â
âOh man, oh man, I love surprises.â
âYouâre really okay with me picking any choice? This isnât one of those things where you say I can pick anything I want, but secretly thereâs a right answer that I damn well better hit? Because I am not that great at reading minds, so.â
âPart of me wants to say yes just to see which answer you think Iâm willing you to pick, but I need a good surprise, so nope, no catch -- no mind reading required.â
âNope, Iâm done, I officially give up on this.â
âOkay, no, I donât mean that. Letâs try one more time.â
âFor the love of Merlin, learn to talk about something other than Mudbloods and death. Not only is it crass and tacky, but your sour mood is bringing down the aesthetic of the entire castle.â
âThe only thing crass about that conversation is you using that word, Narcissa. Leave them be, for Godricâs sake.â
âBut, Moooooooom, Iâm bored.â
âTo which my mother would always reply, âOnly boring people are bored, Caradocâ. So, what do you say? Dare to not be boring with me? Option A, we throw an impromptu karaoke glitter party in the corridor. Option B, we go play tag on broomsticks. And option CâŠ. you close your eyes and let me kiss you, right here, right now.â
âYour mum sounds like a wise woman, âDoc.â A laugh slipped past the redheadâs lips. âAh, quite a dilemma youâve given me here. Why donât you surprise me? Pick your poison.â
âIâve never seen Mary go on a rant that articulate, but hey, maybe Iâm wrong. It is, isnât? I think so, but even if she doesnât, it wouldnât hurt to ask. Especially since I have a feeling youâll be her favorite within the month.â
âSlightly offended our looks have never wounded Donovan Yaxley in such ways, but yeah. Her death glare is definitely goals.â
âHey now, that could even be you in a position like hers in a few years. âProfessor Blackâ, I can see it now. Changing the wizarding education system one high-heeled step at a time.â
âWe can only dream. Even though Iâm pretty sure you at least have a few Gryffindors that turn around in the halls when they see you.â
He was an asshole- heâd already accepted that fact about himself. It wasnât hard considering it was difficult for him to get through a day without internally cursing most that crossed his path. But heâd always tried to make that exception for Lily. She didnât deserve his snark and bitterness, and as the words left his mouth he felt himself flush and hang his head. âSorry-â He lifted his head slightly to make eye contact with her. âI didnât mean- You know how I get- Sorry.â He shook his head sheepishly and looked back at his potion.Â
âNormally Iâd want to be alone- but not when itâs you. Youâre probably the only other person in this ruddy who even understands what the hell is happening inside my cauldron.â He felt the corner of his lips lift into a brittle smile, as if he hadnât worked those muscles in far too long- which was true. âIâm trying to put some sort of time release property into this potion, but I just canât seem to get it right.â Itâd been bothering him for days, and Slughorn had been absolutely no help.
Lily offered a small smile, knocking her shoulder gently against his. âDonât worry about it. Iâve been on edge too,â she responded, tone soft. The redhead linked her arm through his, looking over the cauldron set before them. Godric, had it been a long week. A brief laugh fell past her lips at his words. âAnd sometimes even I donât understand what that brain of yours is mastering this week.â There was something about seeing him smile, even the slightest bit, that made her own spread wider. Perhaps it was because she so often saw him doing anything but, which was a shame. He deserved better. âOkay -- and what is this potion supposed to do? I mean, once the time release bit works. And is there any way I can help you out?â
âOh donât you worry, Evans, Iâll get the kiddies to bed in just a moment. Iâm letting them admire the view first.âÂ
âWere you always a piece of shit or did they teach you that between classical dance lessons? They were children, Rodolphus, they didnât deserve to see that. They shouldnât ever have had to see something as awful as that first hand.â
âYeah. Watching her talk was⊠well. It was kind of like watching your future play out in front of my eyes. You really have to get one of those white peacoats she has, it screams âwoman-on-a-missionâ.â
âMine? Oh, Merlin, I doubt it. Perhaps Mary or Marlene. Though that peacoat of herâs is really cute. Think sheâd tell me where she bought it if I asked?â
âIâm pretty sure I saw Donovan Yaxley practically fold in on himself when she looked at him during class today, though -- if looks could kill, eh?â
