DCU Time

Specifically, DCU TV (Peacemaker and Creature Commandos). I wanted to re-watch Peacemaker before watching Creature Commandos or season 2, and it felt like a fitting time since I just finished my DCEU re-watch. Thoughts (and spoilers) to follow. Peacemaker Season One

Peacemaker season one was just as good the second time around. I really enjoyed it, and feel like its a great continuation of the character's arc from TSS. I think it presents a very good group of flawed, human characters (even Murn), who despite the horrible things they've done or the shell's they've built for themselves are not fundamentally evil or unrepeatable. I only wish he used the Sword from TSS again.

Creature Commandos

It was a fun watch, the pacing felt a little bit fast imo. Even with the flashbacks, I feel like we knew/bonded less with these characters than those in the TSS, which is a shame and also kinda weird since typically I expect TV shows to spend more time on setting up characters. GI Robot and the Bride were standouts. I like the arc we see for Rick Flag Sr starting here.

Peacemaker Season Two

Greatly enjoyed it. My only complaint I think is that Vij is underutilized early in the season, but still found it super enjoyable. I think they handled the Nazi plot really well (made it clear that they were horrible people/racist, but did not feel gratuitous in how that racism was presented), and I'm excited to see where the plot threads from this season with Checkerboard, Salvation, and Captain Triumph pick up in future projects.

Next, I'm going to watch Every Super-Man Movie in release order. I'll be back when I'm back.

Back from the dead. I've decided to (re) watch all the DCEU movies since there were a couple I hadn't seen and I wanted to see them all now that the universe is over. Thoughts so far. Man of Steel

Man of Steel has a like mildly interesting but somewhat cliche sci-fi movie in there that has been trapped within a mediocre/bad Superman movie. It's not a horrible movie, but it is def not as good as I thought it was when I was 13, both a product of age, knowing more about Superman, and having the recent movie to compare it to.

Batman v Superman

Interestingly this movie was actually better than I remembered it being. Don't get me wrong, I don't like it as an adaptation of literally any of the characters in it, and the climax is still pretty weak, but it has more going on for it than I remembered. Have 0 desire to watch it again however.

Suicide Squad

Bad movie. It very clearly felt like stuff got cut and the movie got stitched back together, but I don't think the original movie would've necessarily been better. Maybe more cohesive? But not great still

Wonder Woman

Of the first four films, this is the best adaptation of the character its about, but wasn't as good as I remember it. I don't think its a bad movie, but I feel like I thought it was better than it was when it came out since it was the first "good" DCEU movie. Justice League

I was planning to watch the 2017 Justice League and ZSJL, but I got to this point and decided I didn't have the stamina for both. I did ZSJL because I hadn't seen it before. I enjoyed it! It was fun. I still think many of the characters are poor adaptations, and the movie was wayyyy too long to be a realistic cinematic release, but the plot was more compelling in this epic sprawling form and the characters were a better as well. Flash stands out as being more fun than I remember in the original Justice League. Part of me is tempted to rewatch the 2017 cut to compare, but I don't want to so I won't.

Aquaman

It was OK. I don't know as much about Aquaman as a character so I can't compare how it felt as an adaptation. Didn't do anything that amazed me, but was also a decent if cliche superhero movie.

Shazam

I was dreading this but I actually really liked it. I wish Zachary Levi hadn't gone off the deep end after getting a modicum of fame, but the movie itself was pretty good and held up imo.

Birds of Prey

The first time I watched this I was like "OK pretty standard film for the DCEU, not great, but not as bad as people thought." Watching it again I liked it even more? I wish Suicide Squad was better, so you could have a loose trilogy of Suicide Squad > Birds of Prey > The Suicide Squad and ignore the rest of the DCEU. WW84 is next, which I remember not being a fan of, and assume will continue to not be a fan of. Will report back in. Very close to the last movie I've seen (TSS); at which point we'll be delving into uncharted waters.

Update: Wonder Woman 1984 WW84 was better than I remembered but the ending fell kinda flat. Honestly I think Gal Gadot was the weakest link in this movie and the other actors/characters felt more compelling/better acted. I'd say that while I liked WW less than I remembered and WW84 more than I remembered, WW is still the better film overall the quality difference was just less extreme than in my recollection. The Suicide Squad Cheffs kiss, masterpiece. As beautiful as the day I lost it. Only critique is that I loved the take on Harley's classic look at the beginning and I think it is the best live action Harley Quinn look we've had, so I wish we saw more of it. The dress is also iconic though so no big issue. Maybe if we get more Harley in the new and improved DCU (whether it is Margot Robbie or someone new) we'll get another cool take on it. Black Adam We're getting into uncharted territory (I haven't seen any of the movies after TSS before). Black Adam was better than I expected it to be but that is not saying much because the bar was pretty low. It feels like Dwayne Johnson/the Rock is actively trying to sabotage his own movie at times, and really I think the JSA was my favorite part of the movie as a whole. Costume design was decent for the most part but I don't think intergang/Khandaq were established well enough and the plot feels incredibly forced pretty much all the time. Will not be re-watching this even in spite of Dr. Fate and Hawkman being very well designed (and good on the eyes ;) Shazam! Fury of the Gods Weak movie, feels like if the DCEU as a whole had been successful this could've been fine as like a "weak but not egregious movie," but was certainly not good enough to stand on its own. In a recurring theme with WW84 and Black Adam, the lead (Zachary Levi in this case, the kids were all fine) feels like they may be the worst part of the movie. The movie just couldn't figure out how to make the stakes feel compelling, and the ending had too many things happening that I didn't care about at once. Asher was also one of the best parts of the original Shazam and they did him so dirty in this movie. The Flash next, fingers crossed because nothing I've heard inspires confidence.

Finale: The Flash

The Flash was better than I expected, with the worst parts of it being, once again, the lead; as well as the fact that the final battle took place in basically a grey expanse of nothing which was not the most visually interesting. I like Flashpoint as a story and I think this did an OK version of it, I think Keaton Batman and Calle Supergirl were both cool, and I honestly had fun with a lot of the movie; but "quirky Ezra Miller" is definitely not my thing. Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle was a lot of fun! There was maybe a bit of line delivery that felt forced/overly cheesy on occasion, but overall it didn't seem too bogged down by this. I think my biggest critique is it felt very cliched/by the beat. I also will admit that Blue Beetle is a character I knew next to nothing about, so it being an accurate adaptation was less of a concern for me going into the movie. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

I've heard a lot of mixed things about this; mostly negative when it came out and positive now saying people were too harsh on what is just a fun/campy family superhero movie. I think watching it directly after Blue Beetle was good because it made it clear how much of a step down Lost Kingdom was since both fit into that same category roughly. The comedy aspect of it felt forced, the set design and effects felt really lame at times (particularly on the Manta ship and some underwater scenes that were painfully obviously CGI; and the entire design of the undead evil guys). Definitely a downgrade both as a funny/family film compared to Blue Beetle, and as a sequel to OG Aquaman.

Closing Thoughts

I feel like the new and improved DCU is off to a good start, and I hope it can learn from some of what dragged the DCEU down. I feel bad for a lot of the actors who it felt could've done much more with their roles, especially when we saw them do a great job in one movie just to prove they're capable of playing the character, only for every other appearance to be pretty shitty. Since some actors have been recast in new roles, and some have kept their original character, hopefully the trend will continue for some of the more standout performances.

shadowheart is an unimpressive and even lacking starting character if we go only by her specs. she's a cleric, but her starting cantrip, fire bolt, relies on intelligence, not wisdom. sacred flame doesn't have the same utilities as other cantrips bc it's a saving throw. she doesn't hit hard enough and her trickery domain provides little in-battle support. you benefit greatly if you spec her OUT of being a trickery cleric. what's more is that deception and intimidation and persuasion - all charisma-based skills - skills that sharrans SHOULD have proficiences and expertise in - are ones she uses with a deficit (-1) due to having poor charisma

anyway, do you ever think about how shadowheart is ill-suited to be a sharran but because of how she was raised, she had no choice but to conform to a lifestyle that actively harms her? i think about that a lot
