The Bennets having no clue about the Darcy/Elizabeth drama is so goddamn funny, especially in the book. This fucking interaction takes me out every time:
Mr. Bennet: Lol, Lizzy, Mr. Collins thinks Darcy wants to marry you, what an idiot, doesn't he know that dude sucks and you hate him?
Lizzy, trying not to cry: yeah, ha, hysterical
Omg, yess!!
Mrs. Bennet: Lizzy! Do Jane and Bingley a favor and distract this horrible man, walk away with this Mr. Darcy
Lizzy, secretly engaged to Darcy since yesterday, literally: oh no, thats fineee
friend sent me an Instagram reel yesterday with 1000s of likes that was basically like "pride and prejudice is timeless actually because it's about an autism romance 🥰" and then the creator proceeded to cite moments in the book and film where Lizzie and Darcy are "socially awkward" and....listen. I'm far from an Austen scholar, but I have taught Austen novels as an educator and this kind of psycho-pop analysis that views characters as individuals with autonomy over their actions, rather than tools in a story written at a particular time to say something about that time, pisses me off more than I can say without sounding like an asshole. I'm sorry but Darcy isn't rude and awkward and even cruel to Lizzie because he has autism, he says and does those things because he's a wealthy upper class land owning man raised to see a middle class woman from a large family with no male heirs like Elizabeth as inherently beneath him which he expresses to her multiple times because it is socially acceptable for him to do so in a society where someone like him is privileged above almost all others. He is "socially awkward" around her because of misogyny and classism (PREJUDICE) and she is "socially awkward" around him because a woman of her standing at that time simply wouldn't have had much to do with the gentry but to actually push back against the shit that Darcy says would be social suicide for her whole family so she protests the only way she can which is refusing his advances (PRIDE). not to be the "context collapse is the death of media literacy" guy. But this is the problem with the kind of head empty, let people enjoy things, if I can't relate to it what's the point type crowd. Youse think you're being so quirky justifying incoherent and anachronistic interpretations with your rampant individualism, ensuring that other people never confront anything that challenges them in these stories like patriarchal misogyny and classism. Pride and Prejudice becomes an "autism4autism romance", completely undermining the historical context of its status as one of the great social satires about the class and gender politics that Austen so expertly observed around her. This attitude is why we have nonsensical historical dramas that actively hate history like fucking edgy bdsm "Wuthering Heights", Bridgerton, The Buccaneers, and even a 2025 Frankenstein movie where the monster is just misunderstood and does no wrong uwu etc. because individual relatability and catharsis is king over anything actually saying anything about anything now. Everything is relatable and nothing is meaningful.
Darcy in his letter being like, "I suppose if you say so, your sister might have actually loved Bingley. I'm not sure though, it seems unlikely. I did look very hard at her for like, whole minutes at the ball. But whatever, it's already done and I still think I was right. Because your family sucks."
Elizabeth to Jane being like, "Darcy's friends who quite literally live with him think he's great, but obviously they are decived and blinded by his wealth. I talked to this hot guy at my aunt's house for a whole evening and I, Elizabeth Bennet, know the real truth: Darcy sucks."
They really are made for each other.
in a way i am my own dead wife
why are all the actual real human jobs like baker and florist and childcare worker barely paying livable wages but the fake jobs like ai specialist boot licker or marketing campaign dick sucker making six figures
To my 25 - 35 year olds, you've reached the age where people around you are starting to give up on themselves because they think it's too late. Don't let that energy rub off on you. It's not too late.
Time to be weird and scary with big bro!
My WIFE (ao3) has been SHOT (is down for maintenance) and is DEAD FOREVER (probably will be back up in a few hours)
a real jegulus fan never speaks ill of lily evans
ai could never come out with the idea to ship harry potter's dad and sirius black's little brother........... and i think that's beautiful
Black Brother Coded
10 y/o old me already completely fascinated by Regulus’ character when I first read the books.
I love the fact that the headcanon of the Blacks being uncanny and creepy, makes 100% sense in canon.
They're described as beautiful with sharp jawlines, pale skin, dark hair, dark eyes, and many being tall with "elegant structure." They're these gorgeous people, and hold themselves to a standard of being this Wizarding World Royalty.
However, they're fucked up at the same time. They have the crazy eyes. It's a coin toss on if they're insane or just severely traumatized; regardless of which, you get this weird feeling around them, because you know something is wrong.
They all look alike, too much a like; there's not enough genes in the pool to make them look too different after all. They look normal alone, but when you put them all together, this uncanny valley feeling settles in when you look at them all enough. Cousins looks like they could be siblings, children are nearly identical to their parents. No one looks the age you expect, everyone is either younger or older than you thought, because no one really looks.. right.
They have a ton of money, power, and connections, so if you look at them wrong for too long, something could happen to you. Just the power alone makes many fear them, but along with the unnerving appearance, being around them must have been complicated for many people.
They're also intelligent, raised with the finest tutors and access to ancient knowledge many could only dream of. If they can't spook you with looks or power, they can outsmart you and plot your downfall with magic alone, no connections involved.
It's unnerving.
oh my GOD
Oh im just internally laughing like a horror monster
which spouse would be the most freaked out accidentally touching an obelisk and randomly teleporting to like ginger island lol
Uh Oh!
Out of all the bachelors and bachelorettes... Penny's the LEAST capable of handling that kind of pressure.
