Unpopular Opinion: Yes, a woman can be radfem and have a male partner.
(premise 1) The radfem community should try to recruit as many women as possible to the movement. It is crucial in the fight for women’s rights that women in large numbers see the light and refuse to back down.
(premise 2) Some women, nay the majority of women, are straight or bisexual.
(premise 3) Sexual orientation is innate and immutable. Straight women are born straight and cannot become gay. Bi women are born bi and cannot become gay or straight. Further, not everyone, radfem or no, has the desire or ability to remain celibate and single, to live their lives without romantic and sexual love.
(premise 4) Straight women and many bi women, told that they cannot date men and be radfem, will tend to turn away from the movement. They will see it as too difficult to give up romantic and sexual relationships with men for the movement. They will fall back on liberal feminism even if they don’t agree with it, as the only option.
(conclusion) Promoting the idea that radical feminists cannot sleep with, date, or marry men only drives women away from the radfem movement, and therefore that idea should not be promoted in radfem spaces. Rather, radical feminism should provide straight women with the resources to avoid, as far as possible, being a slave to misogyny- even with a male partner.
Caveats and clarifications:
- The goal of any radical feminist who chooses to date men should be to have zero tolerance for misogyny or lack of respect for women in her male partner. She should refuse to tolerate misogynistic actions, including but not limited to the following: Watching pornography, making sexist comments towards her or any woman, refusing to prioritize her pleasure during sex, violating physical/sexual consent, shaming her period, refusing to acknowledge the struggles of women, or trying to control her dress and appearance such as makeup, shaving, etc. Dating men as a feminist is about thoroughly vetting and refusing to take less than total respect.
- Men cannot be feminists. Radical feminism is for women only. It is by women, for women, and about women first. Men can, however, be “feminist allies” in the sense that they uphold feminist principles, but they must not speak over women and must be willing to be educated by women.
- From a personal perspective I fully admit to being a radfem bisexual woman dating a man. A straight man at that. I know I know. I’m not going to sit here and say “hE’s dIfFeReNt” - my partner, despite passing all my tests, checking the boxes, and showing every sign of being a feminist ally, is still a man. Men are always just…men and he’s not a magical exception. Nor do I aim to praise him for the bare minimum. But I chose to date him because I wanted to, and I am happy in my relationship. I don’t feel any conflict between my radfem beliefs and my relationship.
- Bisexual women should not be forced to “choose to be lesbian” for the movement. That’s biphobic, full stop. Their attraction to men as well as to women should be acknowledged and supported. And judging bi women for dating men is the same as judging straight women for dating men.
- Female separatism is still important. At its core separatism means “prioritize women in your life” , not “cut off every single male in your life”. In a relationship with a man, a woman can still: Build mostly female friendships, only go to female doctors and medical practitioners, try to build working relationships with mostly female bosses/supervisors/coworkers/professors/classmates, consume media by women, support female-owned businesses, etc.
- There is no middle ground between traditional gender roles and radical feminism. A radfem in a het relationship should aim to break gender roles. Holding a job and keeping separate bank accounts, not taking her husband’s last name, refusing to take the bulk of responsibility for household/childcare, etc.
The Horrific Practice of Chinese Foot Binding
Women have done many things for beauty throughout history – from indifferently using arsenic or lead-based cosmetics, suffering broken ribs from over-binding corsets for a smaller waist, to yet more extreme forms of body modification. One of the most agonizingly painful of such practices is the Chinese custom of foot binding. This required the feet of young women, most typically young girls, to be broken and bound until they were able to fit inside a tiny shoe. The ideal was a three-inch-long foot. The process itself took around two years, but the feet would stay bound for life.
The tradition was believed to have begun around 970 AD when the consort of Emperor Li Yu of the Tang Dynasty performed a dance on a ‘golden lotus’ pedestal, wrapping her feet in silken cloths. The ruler was so entranced by the beauty of the movement that other women in the court imitated the look.
For over a thousand years, tiny bound feet were considered highly erotic, and the resulting ‘lotus gait’ – caused by women needing to walk on their heels in a unsteady, ‘mincing’ manner was not only arousing for men but thought to make the sexual anatomy “more voluptuous and sensitive”. During the Qing Dynasty, love manuals apparently detailed 48 different ways of fondling a woman’s bound feet. However even while in bed, women wore special slippers to conceal them.
Chinese women upheld foot binding believing it promoted health and fertility, in spite of the crippling pain they suffered. The practice also took the perceived disadvantage of being born a woman and turned it into a social advantage in terms of the marital opportunities it afforded. Women with unbound feet were highly unlikely to enter into a prestigious marriage, forcing those of the upper classes to ‘marry down’ while those of lower social status risked being sold into slavery. Women with bound feet were the ‘lily footed’ ladies of Chinese society. Fortunately, the Chinese government outlawed foot binding in 1911. A thousand years of women with bound feet.
For goodness’ sake, can we talk about how this is not just a matter of “beauty” (“women have done many things for beauty throughout history” — silly women!) but about literally and physically restricting women? About how beauty norms and constructions of femininity under patriarchy are designed to make women less powerful? It’s not an accident. When it’s impossible for women to walk or run without pain or injury (e.g., footbinding, high heels, etc.), women are less in control of their own bodies and physical movement and are thus more vulnerable. Attaching erotic and social value to those looks—even calling them “healthy”!—is a very effective way to get women to “willingly” participate. And can we talk about how another factor at the heart of “beauty” norms is that women’s bodies in their natural state are flawed, unattractive, and need fixing (whether by footbinding, corsets, cosmetic surgery, makeup, dieting, waxing, etc.)? Presenting footbinding as taking “the perceived [sic – it wasn’t/isn’t just a perception, because girls and women were and are actually worse off!] disadvantage of being born a woman” and “turn[ing] it into a social advantage in terms of marital opportunities” completely misses the point: that footbinding was an example of how women’s social inequality (as well as class differences between women) were physically cemented in their bodies.
“the resulting ‘lotus gait’ – caused by women needing to walk on their heels in a unsteady, ‘mincing’ manner was not only arousing for men but thought to make the sexual anatomy “more voluptuous and sensitive”.” - men think women in pain and women who can’t move are sexy. that’s nothing new. it’s why we have HIGH HEELS.
the point of beauty practices for women is that they take time, are painful and makes women unable to move freely. that’s WHY THEY EXIST.
THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF FEMININITY, no matter the culture or the country.
I have a vicious hatred in my entire body for the term "Karen", first of all how dare you taint an entire name so that innocent women suddenly can't go anywhere without being taunted. Second of all women are ALREADY so afraid of saying anything and standing up for themselves. They'll tell stories of the most messed up injustices being done to them but they'll be terrified of speaking up on it because they think they're just being dramatic. So much misogyny goes by unquestioned even though women are rightfully angry about it, they just don't make a stink so nothing gets done. They were like this a gazillion years before those idiots came around trying to punish women even more for not keeping quiet and dealing with their wrongdoings.
BASED !!!!!!!! FEMINIST ICON
No offense but why is it that makeup culture is so evil and we all currently live in hell
i hate makeup
imagine how much they really hate actual unfeminine women, if going with your natural face out is getting this reaction.
Why are they trying to drag her she looks great without makeup. Just goes to show that when people say that make up is a choice and it’s ok to wear it or not wear it they’re lying lol
Men go out without makeup … Showing their uneven skin tone and dark bags, ans they don’t get called “haggard”, “a fucking mess”, or “tired”. People have become so accustomed to women painting their faces with five coatings that they flip their shit when a woman is genuinely normal. God I hate libfems, who literally encourage this behaviour.
Makeup-obsessed women show endless cruelty to any woman who doesn’t validate their obsession. Their understanding of class solidarity begins and ends with whether or not you have a makeup collection.
the audacity to call her sis
The only gender neutral bathrooms that should exist are single use ones, where only one person is in there so it doesn't matter anyway.
If I (and many other women) are scared of passing a man while on a walk, imagine how scared many women will be in a bathroom with men.
Bathrooms are not only a space to pee for women. It is a place to fix your hijab, it is a place to ask "oh no! does anyone have tampon", it is a place to fix your bra because the straps need loosening or a clasp came undone, it is a place to cry, it's a place to hide if someone is being creepy, it's a safe space to women. Men usually see public bathrooms as a place to pee, poo, and wash hands and that's all. Women see bathrooms as a safe space as well as a bathroom. There's a social aspect too, many women go in groups and talk as we pee or fix our hair.
Bathrooms to women are much different than bathrooms to men. It's a safe space. It's not fair to take that away.

Half of me wants to never have kids to stick it to the patriarchy and the other half of me wants to either have or adopt a girl so I can teach her to be an angry radical feminist like me
apparently relevant, where is the tumblr photo post with the ... i want badly to say Italy but I'm not sure ... legislative rep voting in assembly with the baby sling, then more photos later as the kid gets older. you might like that one
Licia (and Vittoria) Ronzulli of Italy!
Although there’s also Larissa Waters, the first person ever to breastfeed (daughter Alia Joy) on the floor of Australian Parliament:
And Illinois’ very own Tammy Duckworth, who caused the United States Senate to change its rules and formally permit people to bring infants (in this case the adorable Maile) onto the Senate floor and breastfeed there.
Stella Creasy and her son and daughter - the UK Parliament has now banned MPs’ children from the chamber.
Breastfeeding or having small children doesn’t have to mean women will have to stay home. We just need societies that doesn’t hate children and mothers.
These children are the literal future of the society. We all should welcome them.
The thing the normie antifeminist (someone who is stupid, misguided, but ultimately believes in gender equality they just think feminism is too mean) dont realize is this could all be over so much quicker if we rip the bandaid off. It is a SCARY thought- that the laws and civilization we have r literally founded on men overpowering women. Its not a fluke its a design. The sooner we start implementing harsher sentences on rapists and violent sex offenders, reclassifying gendered violence as a hate crime, and giving Bad Men consequences, the sooner we can stop talking about it! Crazy how that works!!!
“not all men-“ exactly, right? If 30 percent of men in the world are rapists- why not just get rid of them. What good does saying “not all men :(“ and wringing our hands do? If anybody “hates men” its the people that get offended when you suggest killing rapists. I for one never said that i think all men are bad (my dad was a man and i love john olivers show). I said all rapists are bad. Do you think all men are rapists? Wow.
What’s your radfem hot take?
Not All Men (tm)
A woman can (gasp) date or marry a man and still be radfem
Some genuine transsexual people exist
It’s ok for radfem women to be stereotypically feminine
The tradwife life is valid
Organized religion is ok
More than one of the above
None of the above
What the fuck
There is literally no reason the porn industry should exist. Porn provides nothing that a person cannot get without watching the rape and abuse of exploited women
“But I need to fantasize to masturbate” - Use your imagination. You have one for a reason. Or read smut/erotica. There’s a whole ton of it online, websites devoted to it. It harms no one for the most part, and some of it is well-written.
"But it helps me know how to spice up my sex life with my partner" - Literally just Google. You can find hundreds of articles on every sex act, sex position, sex toy, or kink under the sun with tasteful, non-pornographic drawings.
"But my partner and I watch it as foreplay to get aroused" - If you can't get aroused by your partner, either you are not attracted to her/him or you have other issues you need to solve, none of which will be solved by watching porn.
"But I deserve to look at naked wo-" - HAHA NO
it's stupid because you've been on the earth for a while now and every time someone says oh you're a feminist, wait until you need to open a jar or yeah everyone wants equal rights until it's time to pay the bill huh you mostly just grit your teeth and suffer through it because you've been up and down that argument before about a million times
so you talk to your bathroom mirror about it: are you aware women only got the right to open a credit card during my mother's life? the ECOA was passed in 1974. if you want, i could ask her to pay.
interesting that their biggest argument against feminism is just "sometimes you'll need help with things, and then you'll be sorry". interesting that they think of women as being damsels in distress and they can swoop in and save you. when you ask someone to take the trash out, you're just asking for support - it's not a gendered thing. interesting that they think of these tiny moments where they can offer any service to their community as "proof" that men are secretly their better. that everyone owes men for these small moments, just because they may occasionally take on a tiny request. interesting.
the bathroom mirror isn't useful. murmuring your soliloquies into your shower. delivering the presidential speech that about how there should be no discussion on rights, justice, and equality.
but there's something deeply sad in there, too. because at the core of it, it's that you're always being reminded of your weakest moments. the times you've realized - oh fuck, i really am not strong enough. the times you've had to call your dad because, yeah, you don't know how a car works. the times where you were horrifically, terribly - acting like a girl.
because god forbid one of those men sees you like that. something in their eyes just... lights up. like you're an emblem of everything they've always secretly believed. you're having a bad day; you fuck up the parallel park. when you get out of a car, a man says women! like he's been waiting to drop that particular bomb. your family is falling apart and you're stressed at your job and you don't have time to grocery shop but when you raise your voice after being interrupted; your coworker's eyebrows shoot up. okay, let's calm down for a moment. i thought you said more women deserve a promotion?
over and over again; that resounding belief: sure but you all actually secretly love the patriarchy. because god forbid you ever need a man to pull you out of a burning building. god forbid you ever stand on your own two feet. you are constantly in the space of either proving them wrong or proving them right - but you always have to be proving something. and it's a tuesday, and you come up on one of these fucking moments where suddenly and fucking terribly - you're weak.
you need someone to just fucking help you. like literally, anyone else. fuck, goddamn it, you can't get this stupid cap open. you're having a flare up of your carpal tunnel. you've already tried using a towel and even your teeth.
it's just... the look of that sly fucking triumph on his face. like see? nobody's really a feminist. not really. at the end of the day, you all need me.
