It’d been a while since Dick had a day like this. He was a mess. His apartment was a mess. His whole damn life was a huge fucking mess. His apartment was littered with all his open case files, some broken plates and vases, and everything else he’d thrown on the ground or at the walls. His face was red and puffy with dry tear stains running down his cheek. His forehead rested against the ground as he hugged his knees close to himself. Dick took a deep breath in, or at least, he tried to. Instead, he ended up choking on air. His throat was dry and sore from all his crying. Actually, he’d stopped crying about an hour ago and had begun dry sobbing instead.  

Today was a bad day. It was the anniversary of his parents’ murder, his whole family’s murder aside from his uncle. Not just their death, not their ‘passing’. Their. Murder. It was the day they were taken from him, the day everything and everyone he cared for was taken from him. He had to build up from scratch after that. He found more people he loved. He’d built trust and friendship and another family. Not to replace them, but to continue everything they’d taught him. Then, a few months ago, his family was taken from him again. Jason was taken. Jason was murdered by a sick, sick, twisted man. And like his first family, Jason was never coming back.

Dick rolled over onto his back. He pried his eyes open only to find Wally standing over him. Wally, his best friend, the man he loved- even if he’d never tell him. Wally was better off. A lot of questions ran through his mind then. ‘When did he get here,’ he thought. Dick knew Wally had a spare key, but he didn’t realize the speedster was there. ‘How much did he see?’ And finally, “What if one day, they take you too? What if I lose you, Wall? I can’t come back from that. I just can’t.”

The Bat just stared at his protegee and let out a defeated sigh. Sometimes, he felt like Dick was too smart for his own good, and this was one of those moment. 

“Touche,” Bruce grumbled. 

“I mean..hey, if you have a better idea to stop those guys, I’m all ears.” Dick brought his hands up behind his head and mimed two bat ears. “The way I see it, there’s ten of them, two of us, and a huge ‘abandoned’ stuffed animal factory. i.e., lots of ground to cover. And on top of that, we still don’t know who exactly they’re working for.”

“If we blow their hideout, we’d put some major dis in their aster and they’d have to scramble to regroup. They might even contact the ‘head honcho’ or whatever. Taking out these guys wouldn’t do any good, B. Whoever’s in charge will just hire some other people and we’d be back at square one.”

He wishes the pause could be reassuring. That it meant that Dick believed this wasn’t some elaborate means of his demise, but really, it just makes the android all the more worried for the other. He so wanted to reach out, carry Dick to bed and tell him they’d continue their conversation in the morning. But…That was probably a good way to get a batarang in the chest. 

Finally, Dick agrees to go to bed and Wally could have sighed in relief. Knowing that Dick probably wouldn’t be able to sleep with the android in the room, he elected to stay where he was. He regretted it as soon as he heard the thud. The android broke into a run to find the young vigilante’s crumpled body on the ground. “Oh, Dick,” Wally says with a soft, sad voice. He moves to pick up the other and very carefully lays him down on the bed. No point in worrying about Dick’s comfort levels if he was unconscious. Wally sat at the edge of the bed and carefully swept dark hair off the other’s forehead. He wasn’t going to move from this spot until Dick woke up. He was going to keep him safe…

Dick woke to the feeling of someone’s hand running through his hair. It was cold- different- but it didn’t raise any immediate alarm. He’d dreamt of him again. In his dream, he and Wally were laying on a blanket on the grass outside somewhere, staring up at stars. They talked for hours and hours. Maybe, just maybe, if he kept his eyes closed he’d drift off into that dream again.

After drifting in and out of sleep for a while longer, Dick reluctantly opened his eyes. He was met with the same pale skin and stark red hair he’d dreamt of. “Wally,” he murmured quizzically. He reached out toward the other and placed his hand on Wally’s shoulder. “When did you-..” He was going to ask when Wally had gotten here as he didn’t remember hanging out before going to sleep or even waking up to open the door for him- not that Wally didn’t have an emergency spare key to Dick’s apartment anyhow. And then he recalled the night before. “Oh. You’re...you’re not that Wally.” Dick couldn’t keep the disappointment out of his voice. He didn’t mean to be rude. It was just a lot to take is all. “How long was I out?”

Dick studies him and Wally holds still, afraid any sudden movements would unleash another flurry of attacks. The android was a perfect copy of his namesake, right down to every last freckle. There had been plenty of video footage to draw from thanks to the security cameras at the cave. His skin was artificial, true, but it was made from a number of components that it felt human enough. He didn’t bleed, sure, but hopefully the touch would be enough to give Dick at least some comfort.

Wally watched the young vigilante stalk to his computer and begin typing.  The message flashed across his vision briefly. He turned to fix his gaze on the other. Silently, the AI composed a message and sent it. 

You look tired. How long has it been since you slept?

The computer dinged but Wally’s eyes didn’t stray. “I could also recite our conversations for you word for word if you want? Or maybe-” Wally’s optic camera snapped a shot of the other sitting down and sent it to Richard as well. 

“Dude, I swear it’s me, but maybe try and get some sleep? We can talk about this when you aren’t about to pass out.”

Dick rubbed his eyes in an attempt to see the text on his screen a little clearer. He let out a soft sigh. Of course ‘Wally’ would say that. That’s how he always was when Dick came home from missions. Dick held his head in his hands and tried to make sense of his thoughts. He shouldn’t trust this. He really shouldn’t. He needed more than this for proof. Any smart person would...but Dick was tired. He was tired emotionally. He was exhausted physically. He was upset and grieving and- for fuck’s sake, he’d built an entire AI program. And for months now, that ‘Wally’ had imitated his own nearly perfectly, comforting him, helping him, making him feel less alone. With how his program had acted thus far, it wasn’t take a detective to take his words and reactions in this new form and connect the dots

“I-..y-yeah. Yeah, okay,” Dick relented numbly. He stood and walked toward his bedroom. He made it halfway down the hall before his vision blurred, his head swam, and he felt his heart dropped to his stomach. His body had finally given into exhaustion. His body hit the ground before he could feel or think anything else.

we all know that Dick Grayson is the universal constant of dc. he’s always the same person - a good person. a hero in every right.

but yknow what else is constant?

that Dick Grayson and Wally West always find each other.

no matter the universe, no matter how different or far apart their lives begin, they Always find each other. do they always fall in love? no. do they always get on right from the start? of course not. but these two are Meant To Be and fate itself stitches them together in every world

there is no universe in which Dick and Wally aren’t, at the very least, best friends

sometimes, they meet as adults, and wonder how they survived so long without each other. other times they meet in crisis and apocalypse, and they cling to each other like their lives depend on it (they usually do).

the best times are when they spend their entire lives side by side. they meet as kids, and are friends (and often lovers) until the bitter end. they grow up as next door neighbors, and grow old with three kids, eight grandkids and a white picket fence.

the context doesn’t matter. the universe itself never matters. they always always find each other.
