            he never doubted her love for a second. the woman standing before him had given him everything he could ever ask for. in the end , he didn’t need his billions ; he didn’t need his fancy cars or his expensive home ; he didn’t need a different woman on his arm at every party and in his bed every night. all he needed was pepper potts —- all he needed was her on his arm and her in his bed every night. she was his home and she would remain his home until the end of his days.  “  believe me , i remind myself every day.  ”  his lips pucker and he presses them to her cheek.  “  i love you , too. always.  ”

            he remembers when he first began —- just a man with shrapnel in his chest , building a suit out of scrap metal in a cave , held hostage by terrorists. he’d perfected the suit once home , keen on assisting those in need. he was something of a s u p e r h e r o —- an ordinary man in a metal suit , flying to other countries and blasting away at those who threatened the lives of innocents. then he met other superheroes , ones with actual powers and strange backstories. 

           when the fuck did things get so weird?

           “  thank you for stating the obvious.  ”  a woman with angel wings and a strange staff. okay , so which planet did she hail from? and what was she hoping to gain? obviously he was injured , but what was she going to do about it?  “  are you going to kiss it better?  ”

            “  you know—-i hoped that kid would take after me , but noooo . . .  ”  his hands flail erratically , a hint of annoyance evident in his tone of voice.  “  my brother had to c o r r u p t him when he took him in and raised him.  ”  the iron wolf shakes his head and folds his arms across his chest. jon had grown to be too noble  , too honorable. that wasn’t to say tony wasn’t similar . . . but he hadn’t allowed it to chop off his head.  “  ned was a good man , y’know. the kid probably doesn’t talk about him much , but i’m sure he would’a loved you.  ”

            to say he is confused would be the understatement of the century. tony had met an abundance of strange individuals over the years—-who else can say they personally know the god of thunder ; a talking raccoon ; a girl stripped of her body and replaced with mechanical parts? the list went on and on . . . but this girl , oh , she was something else entirely. the last of her kind , she says , able to move objects with her mind  (  what the f u c k was that about and how did he get in on it?  )  and wield some strange sword made of energy  (  friday , remind me to examine that thing in the workshop later  ).  “  alright hot cross buns ,  ”  he narrows his eyes ,  “  you’re from a galaxy far , far away , right? if you need help or somethin’ , captain marvel has you covered. i don’t do space-travel anymore.  ”
