In Islam, a believer is like the example of a “shajara tayyiba”, or a good tree. During winter months the tree conserves its energy and resources and literally grows a thicker layer to protect itself from the surrounding harsh environment. During the summer, the tree thrives and produces fruits and flowers allowing it to contribute to the world, and further its cause in future generations. Like a good tree, we must protect ourselves and maintain self-care during the winters of our life. These are the times we reflect on ourselves, reevaluate and accept the situation around us. During the summers, we grow beyond ourselves, contribute to humanity, seek pleasure and give thanks. A Muslim understands that hardship is temporary and ease is certain to follow, just like summer always follows winter. A Muslim understands that we have to be uncomfortable sometimes in order to grow stronger. Allah has designed our lives in harmony with the flow of nature. I have come to understand that Allah has maintained this world in balance through a constant state of calculated motion and undulation between states. The alternation of night and day, the cycling of winds and ocean currents, the earth’s magnetic polarity, and the cycle of life and death are all signs for those who wish to see. Contrary to popular belief, balance is not a fixed station, rather it is the undulation between two extremes. Each time we move, we grow and achieve the stable, yet fluctuating state of balance, or sukoon. Such is the example of life, we must accept the alternation between states of certainty and uncertainty, all the while surrendering control to Allah and maintaining trust in Him with the belief that every situation has been designed to provide us with opportunities for growth. While a tree's leaves change in every season, the trunk stands strong.
