Island Jungle of Tasmania #1
The beaches are nice in Tassie. This was taken on a trip to Diana's Basin one summer when it definitely wasn't snowing. Was talking to an old bloke who was from the Apple Isle the other day, who reckons that place is now over run by feral cats. Poor cats. There was a certain type of over saturation you could get from those cheap Kodak films that the local two dollar shop used to sell. Sad day when they disappeared. Chickenfeed for lyfe.
On Trend... With A Polariser
It's hard in photography to keep on trend. Instagram brought back the square format. Facebook brought the selfie. Hipsters brought the film grain. 80's brought the soft filter effect. Cheap full frames and primes brought the bokeh. Which is really just a pretentious way of saying blur. These cain fields up in the burbs of Bli Bli make this shot feel on trend... Cain fields are in people. I like how her arms are waving in the direction of the cains. I like how the f/2.8 makes the background slightly blurred (bokeh-ayd ha) but not too blurred (bokeh-ayd). I like how the f/2.8 costs two hundred bucks. I like the pic. Fini.
Water & Grain
It doesn't matter what you shoot with as long as you shoot with something right? This was taken right after a crazy lightning storm..instead of cleaning up our soaked camp site we sat up on the rocks and had a smoke. We had it all to ourselves. Only happens in Tassie it seems.
Moody Blue
I shot this one time when I was road tripping with my mates down on the east coast of Tasmania back when I had some dodgy telephoto lens on my 6 megapixel Pentax that I had and thought was amazing. It was a full manual lens and had to be used in full manual mode. Me, not knowing how to operate a camera fully in manual decided to dial up a whopping 1/1500th to capture this near black photo. I lifted the centre up in photoshop at school and thought it looked alright. The colours are great which is what the camera recorded. Earlier that day I had captured some epic moments in the surf before realising I hadn't put any film in my other camera so had to resort to the old faithful digital... Memory cards are so reliable. Shooting with two bodies at the time definitely earned some street cred too.
Flower Photography With No Flowers
Back when I was stoked owning a Nikon F5 I used to shoot anything. I was getting free processing at the time so I was shooting as if it were a digital. Through that, every now and then you would get an idea with something that you see right in front of you. This plant used to be in my yard. The obsession with a shallow depth of field is obvious. Shooting like that was fun. Pick your camera up more folks.
Beers & Photography
When I go shooting I hate sifting through thousands of dud images on my computer or wasting a whole roll of film and getting one 'keeper'. Plan your shot before you take it. It will be more satisfying and less time consuming when sitting in front of the expensive square box people like to name after fruits or house features which have nothing to do with what they actually are. Computers don't make you a healthy eater nor do they inspire imaginative writing. Get out and shoot and don't use your ten frames a second on a pelican eating some fish and chips. Grab a six pack and imagine your shot before you shoot. No one likes you if you have square eyes right?
6MP Shooting
Never be a camera snob. You don't need the best gear to get out and start taking photo's. Years ago no one had twenty megapixels to play with so we don't need it now right? Next time you have a bit of spare cash floating around (ha) try purchasing an experience rather than a new lens that will replace your current gear. This shot was taken on a beach somewhere on the east coast of Tasmania back when I wasn't too sure exactly what aperture meant. It was probably taken on auto. Get out and start shooting. Your crappy camera can handle it.
Wide Angle Distortion
There's something amazing with how a wide angle distorts the planet around us. It makes simple looking landscape photographs look as though the sky is wrapping itself over the top of the subject. The real estate agents best friend as they say... It will make your balcony huge and your bathroom huge-er. It will also make your skies look amazing. Use a wide angle lens for your landscapes!! The colours created here are thanks to a Queensland sunset and a little help from my Cokin ND8 filter which adds a little saturation when exposed correctly.
Slow That Sutter Down
Using neutral density (ND) filters is lots of fun. You can trick the camera into thinking it's night time rather than daylight. This image was shot using a one second shutter speed and when used in combination with an ND8 filter enabled the camera not to over expose and put a slight movement blur over the incoming waves. I like using the Cokin P-series filter range as it's a semi affordable way to ND all your lenses up. The colours are amazing around the time the sun goes down in Queensland. Very different in comparison to Tassie skies. Sitting around and watching the colours change over the course of an hour is good for the soul I reckon. It's hard to be stressed out when you have a backyard that looks like this.
Night Photography with the Canon 40D
One has to be patient with a 40D. The waiting time for a 627 second long exposure to process is the equivalent of ducking into the pub for a quick counter meal. (About half an hour) Looking on the bright side though that leaves more than ample time to scout out your next shot. Using the 40D is kind of like going back in time when high res screens weren't invented yet and minimal sharpening and small print sizes was the norm. It is however, good times. You'll find yourself saying old man things like, "They don't build 'em like this anymore," and other things such as, "The weight is good. It feels like a camera." etc etc.
