My last year of medical school. My last few months of student freedom. I don’t have to work every day, I can manage to take a week off. And that’s exactly what I do! My future is dedicated to helping people who are sick as well as anyone in need. While I can, I made a promise to myself to see as much of the world as possible. Thailand is beautiful.
This is how us medical students spend our Valentine's Day weekend. Ballroom dancing takes the mind off of upcoming finals!
Have you been to Iceland yet? Peace of mind.
This is my companion, who helps me with my studies, who sleeps with me and keeps me sane through the long nights of exam prep. Guess his name? It's Gunther.
After returning from Venice, I studied long and hard to pass my last exam. Traumatology & Orthopedics. My examinator requested that I draw him a set of lungs and show him the airflow during so called ‘pathological breathing’, which occurs with a collapsed lung during a pneumothorax. I sketched out two circles, one small, one large. Those were to be the lungs. The examinator flipped! He took my drawing and addressed the class: “Is THIS what lungs look like to you?!”. I was baffled. I continued to draw and explain the phenomenon. Later I answered all his questions and got a perfect score. But I will never draw two lungs as a circle again!
After my last exam, I took another trip. This one to Budapest, Hungary. Budapest is the only European capital city, which is considered a resort. Places I recommend: Széchenyi Thermal Bath (get a cabin, as it is easier and much more comfortable than a locker; go in the evening - less kids, more space, but arrive before 19:00, so you catch the thermal pools), Rudas Baths (go for the night swim - it is wonderful), ‘Cat Cafe’ for the atmosphere, ‘Leves’ for the on-the-go soup by the Central Market, ‘Habos Gofri’ for the popular waffles to-go, and definitely visit ‘Belvárosi Disznótoros’ - a meat haven for meat lovers and ‘For Sale Pub’ for the famous goulash soup. The only downside to the trip, was the complex and unlike-any-other Hungarian language.
My next escape was to Venice, Italy in the early dates of October. I stayed at an AirBnb member’s place between San Marco plaza and the Rialto bridge. A wonderful city indeed. That's why I proposed to my ex-wife here over three years ago. I guess giving the places of old forgotten romances a visit gave me a happier outlook for the future. I felt like I was still able to understand what I felt then, and this time I am ready for someone new, for the past is the past, and the person I married is in that past.
All in all, being in a foreign environment makes me invisible. I don't speak Italian, I don't know the streets of Venice, I am insignificant to the lives of the locals - I am temporary, but still Venice made me feel very welcome. This city should be on everyone’s “To Go” list.
As in Paris, I spent a day picking, writing and sending out postcards to my family and friends. It is memorable to receive a shoutout from across the world.
August passed. I returned from Montenegro, feeling a bit refreshed. My last year of medical school began. Days moved like weeks. I couldn’t listen to the lectures, I couldn't study. How am I going to pass my last exam, I thought, which was coming up in a few weeks. Well, I decided to take a break in Paris, the city of love. After a disastrous delayed flight had me overnight in Zurich, I arrived at Paris a day later, but did not regret it one bit. The city is beautiful. Having been there before, I knew my way around the city and my mediocre knowledge of French was helpful. A bottle of wine by the Siene and a studio, with a view of the Eiffel tower (thank you, AirBnb), had me feel like I was more at peace with my surroundings, than back at home.
