A/N:
hey yall âĄ
this one was inspired by the running gag that Hoseok keeps alive, talking about he doesnât speak English when we know heâs a lot more fluent than he lets on đ
takes place during the Hope on Stage tour era, with a few creative liberties incorporated
not sure how many chapters this will end up beingâŠthis one is fresh off the boat but I have several in the editing stages.
enjoy! âĄ
âââ ââ ââ â âââ
Chapter One
Jung Hoseok had exactly eleven minutes to himself, and he choose to spend them on the practice room floor, flat on his back, staring at the ceiling like it owed him money.
HOPE: ON STAGE. Twenty-five cities across four continents. His tour â his solo tour â in arenas he once entered as one of seven. Somewhere in this building there was a whiteboard with his face on it and the word FLAGSHIP underlined twice, and every time he thought about it his heart did something that was either excitement or cardiac arrest, and he had made a conscious decision not to find out which.
He's fine. He's fine. He'd been rehearsing since six a.m, his calves were cussing him out and the setlist still had a hole in the second act shaped like a song he hadn't finished yet, but he's â
The door opened. Manager Bae stepped in holding a tablet like a summons.
"Meeting."
"I live here now," Hoseok said to the ceiling. "Tell them I died. Beautifully. And mid-spin."
"Logistics. Ten minutes." Manager Bae cleared his throat. "They have snacks."
He was upright in one motion, sunshine restored and dimples fully deployed. "Why didn't you lead with snacks?"
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
The conference room contained four staff, one tour director, a plate of tangerines, and a slide deck with more bullet points than his last album had lyrics. Hoseok peeled a tangerine and nodded through freight schedules, visa timelines, venue capacities, the phrase press obligations said the way doctors say we found something.
Then came slide nineteen.
INTERPRETER â INTERNATIONAL PRESS (FULL TOUR).
He stopped peeling.
"A translator," he said, pleasantly, feeling anything but. "For me."
"For the interviews," the tour director said. "Sixty-plus international press engagements. The company wants the burden off yourâ"
"I've been studying." It came out sharper than he intended, so he laughed it back into a shape they were accustomed toâ easy and bright. "For two years. With tutors. And flash cards. I pretty much dream in subtitles now. I can do the interviews."
And it's true. That's the joke nobody was in on except him and eight million fans who thought it was a gag â sorry, my English is very bad, delivered in lightly accented English on live broadcast, ARMY screaming in the comments, everyone laughing, nobody sure. Two years of grinding vocabulary lists at two a.m. so the joke could be a joke and not a shield. He didn't do all that to be handed a mouthpiece like he was fragile.
Manager Bae, who had known him for nine years and feared nothing, slid the tablet across the table. "Candidates. Just look."
Hoseok looks. Only to be polite.
RĂ©sumĂ© one: fine. RĂ©sumĂ© two: fine. RĂ©sumĂ© threeâ
He stopped chewing.
It was not the photo. Okay â it was not only the photo, though the photo was doing some heavy lifting â objectively the woman in the photo was one of the most strikingly beautiful he'd ever seen, and he'd seen plenty. It was the rĂ©sumĂ© underneath that was really speaking to him. 'Simultaneous interpretation', 'diplomatic summits'. 'Crisis comms'.
His eyes, normally narrowed when focused, slowly widened as the list under her name grew increasingly impressive.
And then, a commendation letter with a phrase that snagged him like a hook through the lip: 'remarkably composed under hostile questioning.'
Remarkably composed.
He read it twice. And then something in his chest leaned forward.
Having to market sunshine for a living, he was well acquainted with the cost of maintaining the mask, staying on brand. And on those nights at two a.m. with flashcards, and a notebook full of notes âdetermined to not be misinterpreted again, carrying that burden was one of the loneliest jobs on earth. But with a person whose whole career was hearing what people actually said, underneath what they saidâ
"Her," he said.
The tour director blinked. "You haven't seen the otherâ"
"Her." He slid the tablet back, smile at full wattage, the one that ended negotiations. "You're right. English is so hard. I'd be lost without help."
Manager Bae narrows his eyes. He had seen this smile before. It had preceded a particular incident with a fire alarm in Osakaâone that Hoseok made him swear not to bring up again.
"Hoseok."
"Bae."
"...I'll send the offer."
Hoseok popped a tangerine segment into his mouth and thought : this is going to be terribly, terribly fun.
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
You'd prepped for worse rooms than this.
That's what you told yourself in the elevator up to HYBE-scale glass and steel, portfolio under your arm, three months of tour terminology loaded and indexed. You'd interpreted for trade ministers. You'd translated a live apology while the CEO delivering it made everything worse. One idol â even the nation's serotonin supply in human form â was manageable.
The doors opened. A woman with a headset walked up you saying, "He's so excited to meet you," and you thought briefly, nobody has ever been excited to meet their translator, as you followed her down the hall.
Jung Hoseok stood up to greet you, and for exactly four seconds, he is everything the compilation videos had promised. Warm. Accomodating. Charming even.
And your immediate, knee jerk thought was Oh no.
Because nobody warned you.
You didn't think he'd be that tall but his presence alone took up so much room, you felt tiny in comparision. It was all you could do to make sure your face still complied with today's agenda as he approached, smilling at you like you were the best news he'd gotten all week.
Stop it, you tell yourself. Stop it right now. He's a client. No matter how attractive his jawline happens to be.
"Thank you for coming!" he said, in Korean, hand over his heart. "I'm so relieved. My English â ah, it's embarrassing. Interviews make me so nervous."
Four seconds. That's how long the performance survived contact with someone whose actual job, for eleven years, had been watching mouths and hands and eyes for the meaning underneath the words.
Because you caught it. All of it, in rapid succession, and filed it the way you filed everything:
The nervous laugh that arrived a half-second after he decided to laugh â deployed, not entirely spontaneous. Eyes that did a full sweep of you before the warmth switched onâcataloguing first, charming second. And when your phone buzzed and you murmured "excuse me â sorry, scheduling," in English, to yourself â
His eyes flicked to your mouth. Tracking the whole sentence. Effortlessly.
Then returned to nervous. On purpose.
Huh, you thought.
You'd met this species before. Diplomats were known for this. Especially the ones fluent in four languages who clung to their interpreter anyway, because the translation lag bought time to think over the next response.
And being underestimated was its own kind of weapon, because then everyone watches the translator and nobody watches them.
In that moment you knew: the nation's sunshine was running an op.
You didn't know what kind yet. You didn't know it was you. But you smiled your best professional smile, and you shook his hand, and you said, in your cleanest Korean, "It's an honor. I'll take good care of your words, Mr. Jung."
Something flickered behind his eyes, and the corner of his lips quirked ever so slightlyâthe only tell he gave, and one you noted with an acommpaning dip in your stomach.
"Ah," he said, soft, like a man confirming something. "I really pick-ded well."
Picked, your brain repeated.
"Sorry â you pick-ded?"
"Did I say pick-ded?"
"You said pick-ded."
"Hm." He looked stricken, and you bit your lip, catching on to where this was starting to go. "It seems my Korean is also not very good."
For about a second and a half you almost laughed.
But did not laugh. You were a professional. But something in your face must have moved anyway, because his whole expression changed, and he leaned in about two inches, and said, in a completely different voice:
"Oh, that's going to be a problem."
"I'm sorry..?"
"Nothing." Sunshine, restored, instantly, like a switch. "Nothing at all. Do you want coffee? I'll get you coffee. Bae hyung-nim â can we get coffee?"
"Thats not nesscâ"
"She takes it with milk," said Jung Hoseok, already walking away, "and extra packets of sugar, I'd bet money," and you stood there on the eleventh floor mouth dropped open as you watched his back.
How does he know that?
There was no way.
He guessed that.
You would find out how he guessed it. It would take you the better part of a year, and by then it would be much too late.
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
You signed that day.
Your friend Hanna was the only one you told later, sworn to absolute secrecy as you were still shuddering at the memory of the iron clad contract and the NDA you'd read line by line.
In solidarity, she ended up sending a link one night with the subject line THIS IS YOUR BOSS, and you watched four minutes of a man telling eight million people, in lightly accented but otherwise flawless English, that his English was very bad.
The comments were thirty thousand people arguing about it, and you almost had to laugh at the accuracy.
he's FLUENT he's been fluent since 2019 WAKE UP
no bc sometimes he genuinely struggles đ„ș
bestie he said "ostensibly" unprompted
You closed the laptop.
You opened the laptop.
You watched it again with the sound off, because sound is for amateurs, and by pass two you had three timestamps, a working theory, and the beginning of a spreadsheet you named CLIENT â LANGUAGE NOTES, because you are a professional, and which was, functionally, a portfolio.
It's due diligence.
Nine tabs, said the laptop.
It's thorough due diligence.
It was also, you noticed somewhere after midnight, the only reliable way to stop your brain wandering back to a man whispering in a low baritone Oh, that's going to be a problem.
You added a tenth tab.
You named it BEHAVIORAL, and went to bed at two in the morning feeling extremely, extremely professional.
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
Three weeks in, you had learned the following about Jung Hoseok:
He rehearsed like a man being chased. Six a.m. until the building started turning its own lights off, and then twenty more minutes.
He was unfailingly, luminously kind to everyone below him on the org chart. The intern who dropped the coffee tray got a hand on her shoulder and a joke that made her laugh instead of cry, and he did it fast, before the embarrassment could set.
And his overall grasp on English was better than yours with your fifth language, which was to say, very goodâand he had never once admitted it to your face.
You had tested him. Quietly. Professionally. An English aside about the schedule, which he answered â the content of it, in Korean, three seconds later, disguised as a lucky guess. An idiom dropped into a briefing â cutting corners â and his mouth twitched a half-second before your translation landed.
By week three you had stopped calling it suspicion.
You had eleven tabs.
What you did not have was a why. Why hire a translator he did not need? Why fly her to twenty-five cities? It was an expensive joke with no visible punchline, and unexplained client behavior made your neck itch.
Soon, the itch got answered.
Seoul press conference. First day of the international leg. Forty journalists crammed in a room, with six cameras, and one long table with two microphones and two name cards: J-Hope, and yours.
He sat down beside you smelling like cedar and hairspray, and feigned gentle terror at the room.
"So many foreign reporters," he stage-whispered in Korean, wide-eyed, for the benefit of the staff. "Thank goodness you're here."
"Mm," you said, and clicked your pen.
The first twenty minutes were legitimate work, and you were good at it, and there was a rhythm to it you'd almost call pleasant. He answered in Korean; you rendered it into English with the color intact, jokes landing where he built them; he watched your mouth while you did it with an attention you chose to interpret as quality control.
Then the reporter from the London outlet asked about the tour title: What did hope mean to him, as an artist stepping onto a stage alone for the first time?
Hoseok nodded, thoughtful after you finished translating the reporters words. Leaned toward you, hand over his mic, lips nearly at your ear â standard interpreter huddle, nothing six cameras hadn't seen a thousand times â
And said, in low, unhurried Korean:
"Cutting corners. Three weeks of testing me. Very sneaky. I like it thoughâ it's been the most interesting month I've had in years."
Oh. Oh. You permitted only a second of it to scratch the surface of your guard before immediatly filteringâ
"âYou wore that perfume to our first meeting, too." Warm. Conversational. Close enough that his breath moved the hair at your temple. "I noticed it then and I've been thinking about it since. So as we've been sitting here, I just couldn't help but wonder..." A pause, half a second, unhurried. "Did you wear it for me?"
He sat back. Uncovered his mic. Sunny as a Sunday morning, to a room of forty journalists:
"Please translate exactly what I said."
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
I'm sorry
Excuse me?
WHAT?
Those three sentiments were only the tip of the iceberg as to what was happening inside your skull the moment his breath ghosted across your cheek, registering the feel of it long before comprending the words his breath carried.
On the outside? Your face was flawless. Your face was a diplomatic asset. Your face had held under an actual defense minister and it was going to hold under a man in eyeliner.
Click, went your pen.
His smile widened by exactly one tooth.
"J-Hope says," you told forty journalists, serene, professional, and utterly dead inside, "that hope isn't loud. That it's the soft decision to rise tomorrow, even when life tried to break you today."
Nobody moved. Somebody's recorder light blinked.
"He says hope isn't always a firework bursting in the sky. Sometimes it's quieter than that. Gentler. Like a ray of sunlight." You did not look at him. "He says ARMY is that light for him â and that he aspires to be a prism for them, so they can see all the colors that make them shine"
The third row made an audible sound. Two reporters wrote it down. One typed A PRISM FOR THEM directly into a headlineâyou watched him do it, and understood that you had unintentionally inspired the pull quote for the entire international press cycle while under attack.
Beside you, Jung Hoseok pressed a hand to his heart, deeply moved by his own poetry.
The gall of him.
And under the table, where no camera reached, his knee knocked yours. Twice.
Nice save.
You were going to kill him.
ââââââ ⟠ââââââ
You got to the greenroom. You made it until the staff cleared out for the venue walkthrough and the door clicked shut, and then eleven years of professional composure left your body all at once.
"What was that?"
"Which part?" He was peeling a tangerine. He was always peeling a tangerine. "The prism line was yours, by the way. All of it. I've never said anything that good in my life. I'm putting it on a shirt."
"You asked me â on camera â to translateâ"
"I asked you to translate exactly what I said. That's the job. It's on the contract. I've read the contract, it'sâ"
"You asked me if I wore it for you."
"Did I? I'm not entirely sure, could you perhaps jog my memory?"
"IN FRONT OF FORTY JOURNALISTSâ"
"None of whom speak Korean." He ate a segment, clearly getting his memory back in record time." I checked. There's one from the Osaka bureau who knows some, but she was in the back, and she was on her phone."
You stood in a greenroom in Seoul with a folder full of terminology and no available sentence.
"You checked."
"I check everything," said Hoseok, and that tidbit was catalougued too.
"You're fluent." It came out flat, you no longer had the strength to keep your findings to yourself. "Effectively. You have been fluent this entire time. I have â I have a spreadsheetâ"
"You have a spreadsheet?" He lit up like you'd handed him a gift. "About me?"
"That is not the pointâ"
"It's a little bit the point."
"You hired me for a job that I wasn't really needed for!" Louder than you had been in a workplace in a decade, and the alarming part was that you did not care. "I turned down a UN contract for this. I prepped three hundred pages of tour terminology. Three hundred. And you sit there doing your ah, English is so hard routine and then you play chicken with your own career in front of six cameras, and if I ever translate you honestly one time â one time â your entireâ"
You stopped. Breathed. Brought it back to something you could recover from.
"Why am I here, Mr. Jung?"
And there â for one second, maybe two â the sunshine dropped.
Not off. Down. Like a dimmer switch. And underneath it was something quieter and more focused than anything he had ever shown a camera, and it was looking directly at you.
"Because forty journalists just heard a fabrication," he said, "that you built in four seconds, and it was better than the truth."
"That's notâ"
"Because you clocked me in the first four seconds of meeting me. Don't try to argue, I watched you do it." He set the tangerine down. "And you shook my hand anyway, you've said nothing to anybody for three weeks, and you've been quietly investigating me like a woman with a badge, and Iâ"
He stopped.
You waited.
He picked the tangerine back up.
"Anyway," he said, sunshine sliding back up to broadcast strength, "no. I don't really need a translator, if we are talking pure mechanics. However, I need the one person in any room who hears what I actually said, and what I actually meant. Most people don't realize that those two different things. But you do. I picked you on purpose and I'm going to enjoy every city of it."
"I could quit."
"You could," he agreed, cheerful. "You won't. You're remarkably composed. It said so in your file. I've decided to treat that as a challenge."
"That commendation was for surviving hostile diplomats."
"I know." The smirk he held was frankly criminal. "Practice."
"I'm invoicing for emotional damages."
"Itemize them," he said, delighted, and held the door for you like a gentleman on the way to a war he had every intention of starting.

2. One of Everything
The tow truck reeked of motor oil and somebody's cold fast-food lunch, and you spent the entire ride into town staring a hole through the windshield, spine locked so rigid it had started to ache, not saying one single word.
Because if you opened your mouth you had NO idea what was going to fall out of it.
Ten minutes. It had been ten minutes and you could still feel it.
Nope. Nope nope nope. Not doing this. Not thinking about it.
You were absolutely thinking about it.
Because he had barely touched you. That was the part your brain kept snagging on.Â
And you'd fallen apart anyway. Completely. Embarrassingly. Against his shoulder with your teeth in it so you wouldn't make it worse.
You would take that to the grave. You would be lowered into the earth with it sealed in your chest. Exceptâ
Except he'd felt the whole thing happen. Every second of it. And then he'd put his mouth to your ear and said good girl, I knew you could do it, like he'd been certain, like it was a foregone conclusion the second you climbed into that truck.
He knew.
HE KNEW.
Great. Wonderful. Perfect. So that was your life now, forever, until you died.
And the worst partâGod, the worst part, the part that had your hands fisted in your lapâ
That had never, in the history of everâŠhappened with anyone before.Â
Not like that. Not once. You'd been on dates. You'd been kissed. You'd been touched, properly, with intent, by guys who were genuinely trying their best, and not one of them had ever gotten you within a mile of that â and this idiot managed it in a moving vehicle without getting a hand under your shirt.
So yeah. You were angry.
Angry at him, because it was on purposeâevery last bit of it. Angry at the car. And at eleven idiotic ignition tries that had dumped you in his lap to begin with.
Mostly, though? Mostly at yourself.
Years of not looking at that boy gone. Over. Undone in the front seat of a tow truck before you even reached the town.
Speaking of, the town if you could even call it that, materialized out of the heat like a mirage that had given up trying to be beautiful.
One gas station. One diner with a flickering sign missing two letters. One motel. And, praise be, one mechanic shop with its garage door yawned open like it had been waiting all day for something to happen.
You had never been so happy to see rust in your life.
The tow truck driver deposited you both in the gravel lot with a cheery "Good luck, kids," which felt less like a blessing and more like a warning. You slid off Jungkook's lap the second the door opened, which meant you promptly forgot about your ankle and put your full weight on it.
"Ahâ shitâ"
His hand shot out and caught your elbow before you could reintroduce your face to the ground for the second time that day.
"Two for two," he observed. "You really committed to the ground thing today, huh."
"I tripped."
"You fell. Twice. Dramatically. In front of an audience."
"The audience," you gritted out, "could keep his commentary to himself."
"The audience paid for a ticket. He gets a program and everything."
You would have argued but the mechanic had emerged, wiping his hands on a rag that was making things dirtier, and you squared your shoulders. You knew how this went. You'd watched your dad handle car people your whole life. The second they clocked two broke college kids, the numbers were sure to climb.
So you opened your mouth, ready to take charge, handle it and be the adult in the room.
And then Jungkook stepped in front of you.
"Hey, man." His voice had dropped into something you had never heard from him. Easy. Grounded. The kind of tone that took up space without asking permission. "Battery's dead. Jumped it off my cables this morning to get it going, but it's not holding a charge anymore â cells are shot. You got one in stock or you gotta order it?"
You blinked.
The mechanic squinted at him, reassessing. "Gotta order it. Won't be in till morning, earliest."
"Cool. What's it run? And don't quote me the tourist rate â we both know a battery's a hundred and change and it's fifteen minutes to drop in."
Excuse me.
Excuse me, since when did Jungkook â who once microwaved a fork on a dare, who thought "check engine" was a friendly suggestion â know what a dead cell was?
Without your permission you felt a pulse race down below to between your legs at a speed that left you dizzy.
Oh no. Oh helllll no. For the love of godâthere was no wayâŠno way that Jungkook speaking to this man like he had some hair on his chest was turning you on.Â
What the fuck was wrong with you??
And â hang on. Rewind. Jumped it off my cables this morning?
He'd jumped it. This morning. Known the battery was on its way out â and driven you across three states on it anyway, because he'd figured it would be fine??
And instead of saying hey, I think the battery's going, he made a dumb joke, and let you believe he was an idiot who fixed things with his foot. Anything but admit he'd got it wrong.
Cause clearly he'd rather you thought he was stupid than wrong.
Now, you were sure he was both.
You stood there, gawking, as the two of them settled into an actual negotiation. Arms crossed. Chin tipped. Not budging. The mechanic named a number, Jungkook named a smaller one, and â the audacity â got it. And then shook the man's hand at the end like they were old friends.
"There a place to stay around here?" he asked, already sliding your bags onto his own shoulder before you could reach for them.
"Motel down the road. Only one in town. Tell Deb I sent you."
"Appreciate it."
Then he turned and walked, expecting you to follow, which you did, because your brain was still back in the lot trying to file a report on what it had just witnessed.
"Okay, who was that."
"That was me handling it."
"Since when do you handle anything?â It came out so fast, you didnât realize you had tossed him a grenade.
âI seemed to handle you just fine fifteen minutes ago.â He tossed it right back, and his smirk was atrocious as he watched you detonate. Your brain once again optimistically beamed a signal down so fast you almost whimpered this time, but you managed to recover with a slow inhale.Â
âIâm going to act like I didnât hear that.â
"Yeah, okâŠtoo soonâgot it. Anyways,â He was giving you a reprieve for now. âYou'd know I work on cars if you ever bothered to pay attention, noona. My brother taught me before he taught Jay."
You stopped walking.
"You jumped it." You held up a hand. "This morning. You jumped a dying battery, and then told me you got it running by kicking it."
"I did kick it." He was fighting a grin, and losing, and there was something underneath the grin that was working a little too hard. "First. Didn't work. Then I used the cables."
"You let me think you fixed a car with your foot."
"Sounded better than the truth."
"The truth is you knew that battery was dying." Your voice climbed. "You jumped it, which means it was already dead, which means you knew â and you put me in that car for a twelve-hour drive across three states anyway, on a maybe."
Jungkook's jaw did something. For half a second you watched it shift ever so slightly, and if you were any less observant you would have missed it.
"I thought it'd hold," he said, shorter than usual. "It didn't. It happens."
"It happens!"
"Batteries die, Y/N. I read it wrong. It's notâ" He caught himself. "It's getting fixed now. That's the part that matters."
"That is not the part thatâ"
"It's the only part I can do anything about." He hitched the bags higher on his shoulder and started walking again. "So that's the part I did."
You opened your mouth and found, irritatingly, that you had nothing.
â
The motel was the color of a Band-Aid and roughly as inviting.
Deb, who did in fact exist, sat behind a counter beneath a wall of keys â most of them hanging on their little hooks like they'd been there since the Clinton administration. She looked up over her glasses as you approached, took one long appraising sweep of the two of you, and something knowing settled across her weathered face.
Oh no.
"Just the two of you?"
"Yes ma'am," Jungkook said, in that same tone that apparently worked on everyone born before 1970. "Need a room for the night. Car's in the shop."
"Mm." Deb tapped a pen. "Well. You're in luck. Sort of."
You did not care for sort of.
"Got exactly one room left. Weekend crowd from the raceway two counties over cleaned me out." She plucked a key from its hook and set it on the counter with a click that echoed way too loud. "Number nine. One bed. There's a chair."
The word bed â singular â landed in your stomach and exploded.
"Ohâ no, we'll need two rooms, or two beds, orâ"
"Honey, I'd love to give you two of anything, but I only got one of everything." Deb slid the key another inch toward Jungkook, bypassing you entirely, which felt personal. "Take it, or take the diner booth. Grill closes at ten."
Jungkook picked up the key. "We'll take it."
"Kookâ"
"Thank you, ma'am. You've been a real lifesaver."
"Mm-hm." Deb was already looking back down at her crossword. "Y'all have a good time."
You were somewhere else entirely at that point â specifically, several feet down a spiral about the words one and bed â and it went past you like the tumbleweed you spotted earlier.
Deb beamed at him on the way out. She had known him for ninety seconds and she already liked him more than she liked you. Figures.
You waited until you were outside, until the office door had swung shut and the evening heat wrapped around you both like a wet towel, before you rounded on him.
"One bed."
"I heard her."
"One bed, Jungkook."
"I'm aware of how counting works." He was already ambling toward the row of doors, jingling the key, insultingly relaxed. "You want me to march back in and yell at a seventy-year-old woman until a second bed materializes? Is that the play?"
"âThe PLAY," you exploded, at a volume that put a bird off the motel roof, "was to NOT BE HERE. The play was to be four hundred miles from this ass-backwards town in a car that WORKED, driven by somebody with the GOD-GIVEN SENSE to notice his vehicle was DYING before he packed another entire human being into it and drove it into a DESERTâ"
"Okayâ"
"âand now I'm STRANDED in a town with ONE of everything, in a motel the color of a BAND-AID, with a busted ankle and a boy who jump-started a battery he KNEW was dead and then LIED about it for a JOKE, and if you say it's getting fixed tomorrow to me one more damn time I swear on everything holy I will take that key and I will LODGE it somewhere that Deb can't reach itâ"
Jungkook waited politely for you to run out of air.
"You done?"
"No."
He waited some more.
"...Yeah."
"Cool." He stopped at the door to number nine and did not unlock it. Turned the key over in his fingers instead. "Hey. Real quick. You think Deb thought we were together?"
You stared at him.
You stared at him for a while.
"Oh." His whole face lit up. "Oh, so you didn't hear her. Guess you were too busy freaking out."
"I was not freakingâ"
"Y'all have a good time," he said, in a truly criminal impression of a seventy-year-old woman. "That's what she said."
"That could mean anythingâ"
"Sure." He nodded, agreeable as anything. "Sure it could."
"We are STRANDED," you informed him, at volume. "I can barely WALK. My entire life is in the trunk of a DEAD CAR a mile up the road, and the thing you have chosen to bring up at this moment â the ONE THING â is what a woman with a CROSSWORD PUZZLE assumed about TWO PEOPLE she has known for NINETY SECONDSâ"
"You don't have to yell, I'm right here."
"âand I need you to understand that NOBODY THINKS THATâ!"
"I'm just saying she's got instincts."
Something dropped through the floor of your stomach and kept going.
Because that was twice now, in sixty minutes, that this boy had said something perfectly stupid in a perfectly casual voice and left you standing there with your pulse in your throat. And you hadn't even recovered from the first one yet.
He was already unlocking the door.
You closed your eyes. You counted.
"You" you said, very evenly, "will be taking the floor."
"Obviously Iâm taking the floor." He slotted the key in and shouldered the door open. "What kind of man do you think I am?"
You opened your mouth.
"Careful," he added, without looking back. "Your answers gonna tell me a lot about what you think about when you can't sleep."
You stepped on his heel on the way in. On purpose. He didn't even flinch, just grinned at the wall like he'd won something.
â
The room was exactly what 50 dollars a night bought: one bed with a floral comforter that had seen things, one armchair that could generously be called structural, a bolted-down TV, next to it a desk with the chair missing, and an air conditioner that rattled to life with all the fight of Jungkookâs dying car.
You sat on the edge of the bed and took your first real breath in hours.
"I'm showering first," Jungkook announced, already toeing off his shoes. It wasn't a question â he'd been making executive decisions all day and clearly saw no reason to stop now. "You can go after. You reek of outside."
"Excuse me?? I reek ofâ"
The bathroom door clicked shut on the rest of it. The pipes groaned, water hissed to life, and you told yourself the thing loosening in your chest was relief at finally getting a minute alone to think.
And you did not think. You spent the entire length of his shower failing to think, listening to him nail a song through the wall, trying very veryhard not to think about him nailing something (or someone) else, and staging stern little internal lectures that collapsed the second the water cut off.
He came out in a towel.
Just the towel. Slung low on his hips, water still tracking down his chest, hair shoved back dark and dripping. And he crossed the room like there was nothing remarkable about any of it, like you weren't boxed into one small room with one bed and a man who was, functionally, naked.
"All yours," he said, pleasant as anything.
You or the shower?
...
No.
NO. Absolutely not. Who said that? WHO SAID THAT?!
That was not a thought you had. That was a thought that wandered in off the street, uninvited, wearing shoes, and you were going to escort it back out and never speak of it again as long as you lived.
Twenty years old. Dean's list. A five-year plan laminated in your desk drawer. And your brain looks at a boy in a towel and comes back with that.
Pathetic. Genuinely, historically pathetic.
You did not need telling twice. You were off the bed and across the room and behind the bathroom door before he'd finished the sentence. Because if the alternative was standing three feet from Jeon Jungkook in a towel, you would take the lukewarm mercy of that shower and you would take it gladly.
You stayed in there way longer than strictly necessary. And you ran the lecture. Ran it again. You are a grown woman. You are a composed, functional, fully-in-command adult who does not come apart over damp freshman boys. Say it again. Say it like you mean it.
By the time you cut the water off you had almost sold it to yourself.
You emerged fortified. Armored. Ready to be normal.
And he was still in the towel.
Sprawled back against the headboard, with one knee up, thumbing through his phone like he had all night and not one stitch more clothing than when you'd left.
"You have got to be kidding me." You flapped a hand at the entire situation. "It's been twenty minutes. Why are you stillâ"
"Oh. My bad." He didn't even glance up. "Just scrolling and lost track of time"
"Put. On. Clothes. NOW."
"Yeah, yeah." He heaved a put-upon sigh, swung off the bed, and ambled to his bag, and you turned pointedly toward the wall to grant him a privacy he had done nothing to earn â and heard him mutter, "Hang on, lemme justâ"
You chose that moment to mishear him and your head turned back for a millisecond.
And of course thatâs when the towel dropped.
You caught it in the corner of your eye: the fabric hitting the floor, a flash of skin, and your entire nervous system flatlined.
"OH MY GOD, KOOKâ" You whipped around to face the wall so fast you nearly retired your bad ankle for good, both hands slapping up over your eyes, heat rocketing straight up your neck. "Are you out of your â you cannot just â  WARN a personâ!!"
Behind you, Jungkook was making a sound you knew intimately. A sound that had haunted your entire adolescence.
He was wheezing. Cackling. Absolutely gone.
"Noona," he managed. "Why are you so jumpy?"
You risked a look through your fingers.
He was wearing shorts.
Gym shorts.Â
Which meant he had pulled them on while you were in the shower, wrapped the towel back over the top of them, and then sat on that bed for fifteen solid minutes pretending to scroll his phone, waiting for you to walk out so he could run this.
Premeditated. The whole thing. Start to finish.
He was folded over the foot of the bed now, one hand braced on his knee, laughing so hard he'd gone completely silent.
A decade. A decade of orchestrated pranks and you had walked straight into it again like it was your first damn day on Earth.
"You absolute piece ofâ" You seized the nearest projectile, which turned out to be the spare pillow, and launched it at his stupid howling head. He caught it one-handed without looking, which pissed you off even more. "I hate you! I have ALWAYS hated you! hope that car stays broken, I hope it gets WORSE, I hope the mechanic calls tomorrow and says the whole thing has to be put DOWNâ"
"Careful." He was still catching his breath, one arm slung over the footboard. "Car stays dead, we stay here. Another night. Same room." His eyes flicked to the bed and back. "Same everything. And the last thing you want is to see me running out of clean clothes."
A beat.
"Or maybe you do."
The sound you made was not a word. It was several consonants colliding at speed, and you had to stop and physically reboot before language would come back online.
"You can't just â you cannot just DROP YOUR TOWEL, Jungkook, that is not a prank, that is a criminalâ"
"You screamed." He wiped at his eyes. "Genuinely screamed. Over the possibility." And then, in the singsong you hated so much: "Don't tell me you were actually scared."
The laughter slowly tapered off, and something sharpened underneath it, and he tipped his head at you with a slow, dawning delight that was so much worse than the prank had been. "Hang on, though. You really freaked the fuck out," His mouth curved. "For a girl working this hard to look unbothered."
Oh, no.
Oh, you'd overplayed it. You'd screamed bloody murder over the mere POSSIBILITY of him being butt ass nakedâ in front of the same person who was a running list of every tell you'd ever had and would surely cash them in later. With interest. At the worst possible moment.
Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.
You went for the blanket. It was all you had left. You snatched it off the bed and marched it to the chair, because rearranging bedding was, it turned out, the only weapon in your arsenal.
"This," you said, smoothing it down with considerably more violence than a blanket requires, "is where youâll sleep. I'll be over here. We are going to be normal, and separate, and we are not going to make this weird."
Jungkook â shorts and nothing else, infuriatingly at ease â leaned a shoulder into the wall and watched you build your little fort with the fond patience of a man watching a kitten hiss at a mirror.
"You keep doing that," he observed.
"Doing what."
"Saying the rules out loud. Normal. Separate. Not weird." He gave a show of counting them off on damp fingers. "Bout the third time since we walked in, give or take. Who're you arguing with, noona? Because it's surely not me. I've barely opened my mouth."
You opened yours to fire back and came up empty, which was its own answer, and you both knew it.
"I'm immune to you," you said instead â flat and final. "Completely immune. I have known you since your stomach and your back touched. Whatever you think is happening here, it does not work on me."
Jungkook's brows rose, slow. And then he smiled â the exact smile of a man who'd just been handed the rope he fully intended to hang you with.
"Okay," he said easily.
"...Okay?"
"Yeah. Okay." He pushed off the wall. "Then me standing here's nothing." Step. "Me half-dressed and dripping on this floor's nothing." Step. "You said it, not me â you're immune. So none of thisâ" a lazy gesture at all of himself, "âdoes a single thing to you. Right?"
"...Right," you said, and it came out a half-register too high.
"Great." He crossed the last of the distance and braced one hand flat on the wall beside your head â caging you in without a single point of contact, just his bare arm and his heat and the slow drip of his hair â close enough that the damp warmth of him and the sheer fact of him wiped the rest of the room clean out of your skull. "Then you won't mind me proving it."
Your back met the wall. Your pulse was somewhere up in your throat. He wasn't even touching you and you'd lost the basic mechanics of breathing.
"That," you got out, "is not proving anythingâ"
And then, because your pride would sooner die on its feet than fold against a wallâŠ
You laughed at him.
It came out thin, but it came out, and you watched it register â watched something in his face shift half a degree.
"God, you're good at this," you said. "You really are. The voice, the wholeâ" you flicked a hand at the arm braced beside your head, "âthis. Somebody's been practicing."
Because that was what this was. That was what this HAD to be.
You knew this boy. Okay? You knew him.
Jungkook did not do depth.Â
He found the thing that got a rise out of you and he pulled it. Over and over. For years. And this? All of this? With the towel, the voice, the whole desert Casanova routine? Same skit. Bigger stage.
He'd figured out he could get to you.
Well. Obviously. You'd handed him the receipt in the truck, hadn't you?
And oh, he'd be so pleased with himself. For a week. Maybe two, if you were really something. And then he'd be eighteen and a freshman with an entire campus in front of him and you'd be that thing that happened in a motel in the middle of nowhere . A story. A notch. The best friend's sister he finally got.
And then holidays, because your parents had basically adopted him. Thanksgiving. Him popping in at Christmas. Sitting across your mother's table from him passing you the rolls.
Nope.
You would not survive that. Not from him. Not from HIM.
"You graduated high school ten minutes ago," you said, and made it light, made it cruel, because light and cruel was the only tone you could still hold. "One moment of weakness on a tow truck and you think you're â what, exactly? You've had a growth spurt and sprouted three lil mustache hairs and now we're doing this?" You shook your head at him, slow before scoffing. "Go to bed, Kook."
That, finally, did something.
He didn't laugh. The light thing went out of his face entirely, and what came up underneath it was so much older than you were braced for.
"That's the part you can't get past, huh? The picture you've got of me in your head." His head tilted. "How old am I in it?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"Humor me."
"I'm not playing this game with you." You folded your arms, which was a mistake, and you knew it was a mistake while you were doing it, and you did it anyway. "What, you want a number?"
"Yeah."
The number that surfaced was fifteen. You did not say fifteen.
"'Cause you left." When he said it had no heat in it. Somehow that was worse. "I was sixteen. You came back twice. One of those times I wasn't even in the country."
"I went to school." It came out hot, and you let it. "That's not a thing that happened to you, Jungkook, that was me getting into a program six hundred miles from home and working my ass into the ground to stay in it. Don't stand there and make my whole life sound like something I did behind your back."
"I didn't say you did it to me." He hadn't moved. "I said you weren't there. Those aren't the same thing."
They weren't. You hated that they weren't.
"So everything you know about me came from Jay over FaceTime." He let that sit exactly one beat too long. "JungHyun never came back from Busan. Stayed out there, got his own place. You know that?"
"Oh," That was news to you. "When?"
"End of that summer." He said it like it was nothing. "I did my mom's shop books all last summer. Every night after close. Know that?"
You did not know that.
You had been in that house all summer. You had walked past him on that couch a dozen times. Said go home, Kook a dozen times. Stepped over his takeout containers a dozen times.
And not once â not ONE time â had you asked him where he'd been before he got there.
Oh.
Oh, that's not great.
"That's not the same asâ"
"What do I wanna do with my life?"
You opened your mouth.
You got as far as the shape of a sentence. The first sound of one.
Then it fell apart in your mouth, because you didn't know. You had no idea. Not a clue, not a guess, not the vaguest edge of one.
You could list every prank that boy had ever pulled on you in chronological order, with dates, and you could not name one single thing he wanted out of his life.
Cool. Great. Really solid showing.
The AC rattled.
"Yeah," he said. "That's what I thought. And for the record it's software engineering. Developing games, maybe even do photography on the side."
That, honestly you could see. Jungkook was a whiz when it came to anything computer related. It still stung a little that you were finding out this way, after all this time.
"You never told me any of it," you said, and heard how weak it was on the way out. "Not once. You had a bunch of chancesâ"
"When?" It landed flat and fast. "You'd say go home, Kook, and I'd go home."
That shut you up.
"I'm not mad at you." And he wasn't, that was true enough, surprisingly. "I'm just saying you got a kid in your head and you like him there. He's safe." A shrug, one shoulder. "Shit's a lot easier if I'm still nine on your porch. Then none of this counts."
Your throat had gone tight.
"That's notâ" you started, and had nowhere to take it.
"You think I'm playing." It came out quiet, with clarity filling his eyes. "That this is a game Iâm running. You really think that, huh?" He let it sit. "Ok, let's do the other thing then. You said we'd talk. So letâs talk." His voice dropped, low and dark and horribly unhurried. "What happened in the truck, Y/N."
The floor dropped out of your stomach.
"I was there," he said. "You were there. Leaning against me. I felt every breath you took, right up until you stopped taking them right." His breath ghosted along your jaw and you had to lock down every muscle you owned. "And I barely touched you, Y/N. That's the part thatâs killing you, isn't it? Half of what I did, I did to your clothes."
"Don'tâ"
"And you still came apart for me. Me. Not some other guy out there. But me." Not cruel. Not gloating. Just â sure, and unwilling to pretend otherwise. "In a moving tow truck. With a complete stranger one seat over. Biting down on my shoulder so you wouldn't give away how far gone you were, and I felt every second of it go through you." He pulled back just far enough to look at you, and the look was so much worse than the words.Â
" I've thought about it every minute since. The blissed out look on your face, god your face, with you cumming all over my lap. Do you have any idea how hard it was not to slip my hand down to just make sure I didnât imagine it? I promise I had never been so hard in my life Y/N I swear to god. And then after all that â all of thatâyou sat there the whole rest of that ride like if you held still enough I'd forget it happened."
He sucked in a slow breath, steadying himself.
"I'm not gonna forget it happened."
You couldn't answer. You'd lost the ability somewhere back around I thought about it every minute since.
"And here's the thing I need you to hear." His voice dropped, even, not a hint of a smirk in it now. "I'm not throwing that in your face to win anything. I know you're embarrassed. I know it scared you. I was there, remember? And I felt you try to disappear the second it was over." A pause. "But I'm not gonna sit here and dance around it just so you feel better, either. So you can tell me all night long that it was the heat, that it didn't mean anything, that I'm still some kid you grew up around. Your mouth can say whatever it wants."
He held your eyes.
"But your body already answered the question. It clearly doesn't know how to lie to me. Its the one part of you that never learned to bluffâand it went and told me the truth."
And there it was. THERE it was. The exact thing about him that made you want to climb out of your own skin, reminding you as a heated breath grazing your cheek.
Everybody else got the best version of you. The girl with the plan. The schedule. The four-point argument. The five-year map. You were the one who had it TOGETHERâ
And this boy looks at you and sees right through it all.
But you couldn't fold that easily, and you ignored the 2nd heartbeat you felt throbbing in between your legs.
He must have felt you go rigid, because he pushed off the wall and stepped back, giving you the room he'd spent five minutes taking away. Which was somehow worse. You could fight the wall. You had no idea what to do with him being considerate.
You used the space to get out from under it, putting the width of the bed between you like it was a trench.
"You don't know me as well as you think you do," you finally said â which was, even as it left your mouth, a coward's move, and both of you knew it.
"Sure." He dropped onto the edge of the mattress, elbows on his knees, entirely at home. "Say boo."
"What?"
"Say it. Out loud. To yourself."
"I'm not going toâ"
"Because if I said it right now you'd hit that ceiling so hard Deb'd charge us for the light fixture."
"I would notâ"
"Y/N. This morning a moth got in the car and you tried to leave through a closed window."
"That moth was the size of a handâ"
"It was the size of a moth." He was fighting a grin and losing. Then it faded, and he tipped his head, and his voice came down a register. "You got a temper that could level a building. You'll argue a thing into the ground before you admit you don't know. You did it about the Olympics. Got punch dumped on your head over table tennisâ"
"You dumped it. That was youâ"
"âand you can't tell anybody no." He kept going, mild, like he was reading off a grocery list and not disassembling you. "Your mom. Jay. Professors. Some stranger with a favor. You fold every time. God forbid somebody thinks less of you."
"That's notâ"
"But you say no to me." He looked up. "Every fucking time. Never once backed down. Not ever."
Your heart was doing something violent behind your ribs.
"So." He rubbed the back of his neck, and you caught it â the tongue pushing into his cheek, quick, gone almost before it happened. "So maybe I'm the only one who gets the real thing. And maybe that's what's messing you up." A shrug. "Cause I've seen all of it. And Iâm still here."
The air conditioner rattled. Somewhere outside, a car passed on the empty road.
"That's notâ" Your voice cracked and you hated it. "You don't get to justâ psychoanalyze me in a motel room, that is notâ"
"I got a C in psych."
"Then stopâ"
"I'm not psychoanalyzing you. I'm telling you I see you. Different thing." He hadn't raised his voice once. That was what was killing you. "I've been seeing you since the beginning , Y/N."
Everything stopped.
"Since I was a kid," he said again, quieter, like it cost him something to hand over. "That's what you keep dancing around. You think this is me trying to get you into bed because there's one and it's convenient? It's not. I've had feelings for you for years."
You forgot how to stand.
"Youâ you can'tâ"
"I can, actually. It's mine to say." He stood, slow, and dragged a hand back through his damp hair. "Why do you think I was at your house just about every day?"
"Because of Jayâ"
"At first. Sure." He shook his head. "After that I came 'cause you were there."
"Thereâs no wayâ"
"Even if it was just to see you for few seconds in the hallway. Even when you were mean to me." A breath of a laugh, rueful. "Especially then. Which I probably need to unpack cause thatâs another thing."
You couldn't get air.
"Last summer I let your mom feed me damn near fifty pounds of cookies just to stay in that living room." He looked at you. "You know good and well your moms cookies are decent but not fifty pounds decent. I've been standing right in front of you for years hoping you'd look up."
"Jungkook." Your eyes were stinging and you willed them, furiously, to stop. "You don't understand. It's not that I don'tâ" You caught it just before it got out. Too close to the edge. "There are reasons."
"Then give me the list." Almost fond. "You love a list. Shoot."
"Jay." First finger, jabbed into the air between you. "You are my little brother's best friend. If we did this, and it went badâI am not blowing up my brother's whole life because you have a â a thing."
"Counter." Instant. "Jay's known since sophomore year."
"What?"
"Told me to say something or shut up about it forever. Called me insufferable." A shrug.Â
Your stomach turned over.
"Why do you think he had you drive with me across the country?" He almost smiled. "Kid's been playing chess since high school."
You lowered the finger slowly.
"...He set us up."
"He set us up. In a car he knew was one bad morning from dying." Almost admiring. "Next argument, noona, you've got that look like you've still got one."
You did. You scrambled for it.
"You know statisticallyâ" you began.
"Oh, here we go."
"âstatistically, relationships that start under conditions of, of situational stress and forced proximity have a significantly higher failure rate, there are studiesâ"
"Name one."
"...There are studies."
"You made that shit up." He said it so gently it was insulting. "You do this. You cite a study, and if I let it sit for four seconds you'll say the word 'longitudinal' and hope I fold."
How the hell did he know you were about to say that?
"Fine. Fine." Second finger, and your voice was climbing now, because you could feel the ground going. "What if it doesn't work? We do this, we crash and burn, and I've torched â everything. My family, our wholeâ " You sucked in a breath. "I would rather have you as this. This annoying constant in my life forever, than have you for like six months and lose you completely. Okay? There. That's the reason. Are you happy?"
âand then it was just out there. In the air. Raw and stupid and true.
No. No no no, put it back, you did not mean to say the real oneâ
His whole face changed.
"That's the most honest thing you've said all day," he said quietly, reverently almost."You'd rather have a piece of me forever than risk the whole thing."
"That's notâ"
"You just told on yourself, Y/N." He took a step. "You wanna keep me."
"Stopâ"
"You can't stand not knowing how it ends. So you'd kill this thing now, while it's still yours."
And then something in him gave, all at once.
"Hey." His voice was softer now. He ducked his head to catch your eyes, and waited until you actually looked at him. "I wanna keep you too."
You forgot how to breathe.
"And you know what else?" Another step, and you backed straight into the chair â his chair, the demilitarized zone you had built with your own two hands, which had lasted a grand total of ten minutes. "This could be the best thing that ever happened to you. And you'll never know. 'Cause not knowing scares you less than it working."
"That's notâ"
"It is." Flat, his voice left no room for argument. "If it works you don't get to steer. And that's the part that terrifies you the most."
You had nothing.
So you reached for the one weapon you had left. The one you'd been swinging since the day he grew taller than you.
"You're a kid." You hauled your chin up, pride dragging itself off the mat for one last round. "To me. I'm older than you, I've got years of school on you â I need a man, Jungkook, not a boy who thinks a smirk and a good jawline count as a personalityâ"
The second it left your mouth you knew you'd made a mistake.
Because Jungkook didn't flinch. Didn't get hurt. His eyes sharpened, slow, the way they did right before he took a dare he had no intention of losing, and you realized too late that you hadn't insulted him.
You'd challenged him.
"A man," he repeated, turning the word over like he liked the taste of it.
"Kookâ"
"'A good jawline.'" His brows went up. "That's pretty specific. You didn't even have to reach for it."
"It's a figure of speechâ"
"It's an inventory." He was almost delighted. "You got a list of everything wrong with me, and every single thing on it is something you've clearly spent time looking at."
"Jungkookâ"
"Alright. Run today back for me." And the humor dropped out of him all at once as he stepped in, the last of the space between you evaporating. "Who talked the mechanic down?"
"Kookâ"
"Who got the room? Who carried your ass up the road in a hundred degrees 'cause you were too proud to sit down and wait?" His voice went even and low, walking you backward away from the chair one word at a time. "You've been falling apart since this morning, noona. Every time â I caught it." A beat. "I caught you."
The backs of your knees hit the edge of the desk.
"Two years." He almost laughed, and there it was again, quick as a flicker â his tongue pressing into his cheek, and you knew you were never a true contender in this fight. "You think two years is what's stopping this?"
"It's not justâ"
"That's not what this is and you know it." His hand came up, slow, giving you every chance to slap it away, and cradled the side of your face. "I've been enough for you all day. You've felt it every time I put my hands on you." His thumb moved once. "That's what's got you spooked. Not that I'm too young." A beat, quiet and lethal. "That I'm exactly enough."
"That's not fair," you whispered.
"I know." His thumb dragged along your cheekbone and your eyes very nearly fell shut. "Been fair for years. I'm done."
"Kookâ"
"And I don't want you to just want me. I already know you do â that's been obvious since I picked you up off that road." A ghost of the smirk, then gone. "So when are you gonna quit lying to yourself and put us both out of our misery?"
"That's notâ"
"Tell me to stop." His mouth was a breath from yours now, his other hand finding that home at the small of your back and pulling you flush, and you felt every place your body met his light up like a live wire. "One word. You use it on me better than anybody." His voice went low. "Say it and I go to sleep in that chair or the floor or wherever the hell you think I belong and we never talk about today again."
You opened your mouth.
The word wasn't there.
For the first time in your entire life â standing in a motel room that smelled like industrial carpet cleaner, with a ruined ankle and your whole meticulous defense in pieces at your feet â you looked at Jungkook, really looked, the way you'd forbidden yourself to for years, and you could not find a single noanywhere in you.
But even with this, your pride held on like Jack from Titanic held on in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Before letting go and freezing to death.
"Okay." Your chin stayed stubbornly up even as your voice went uneven. âSo what if I feel something for you? That doesn't mean it has to be anything, ok? It doesn't have to turn into some wholeâ"
He kissed you.
Cut the sentence off clean, one hand sliding into your damp hair to angle your head exactly where he wanted it, and then he drew back just far enough to speak against your mouth, close enough that you felt every word land.
"No." He said it low. Certain and final. "It could be everything.Everything you've ever wanted." His nose dragged along yours. "In fact â I know it is. So stop trying to fight it." His hand fisted at the small of your back and pulled you flush against him. "When I know you want this just as much as I do."
And then his mouth was back on yours before you could get one word of argument out, and the rest of it dissolved against his lips.
It was nothing like the two or three times you'd let yourself imagine it before shaking the thought loose. It was better and it was worse â worse because now you would know, now you could never go back to not knowing. This kiss started slow, almost unbearably unhurried, like even now he was leaving you room to change your mind â and then your arms curled around his neck to drag him closer instead of shoving him away, and whatever restraint he'd been holding onto all day snapped clean in half.
His hand fisted into your damp hair to tilt your head and deepen it until you'd forgotten there had ever been an argument to lose, and the other splayed hot and possessive at the small of your back, before slipping down to your thigh and lifting you up one handed onto the desk.
His weight settled in between your open legs you like it had always belonged there, and you arched up into it before your pride could get a single word in â and the low, wrecked sound he made against your mouth at that, at you finally giving instead of fighting, undid you faster than anything he'd said all night.
He dragged his mouth off yours and along the line of your jaw, down the column of your throat, and whatever you had been about to say evaporated somewhere between your brain and your mouth and did not come back.
You made a sound instead.
The same sound. The one from the truck, the one you'd bitten into his shoulder to smother â and you felt him register it exactly the way he had the first time. That half-second stillness. Then the slow curve of his mouth against your skin.
"Oh," he murmured, delighted. "So you got nothing to say now, do you? Now that I've got my hands on you again."
Your face went up in flames.
"I have plentyâ"
"Mm-hm."
"âto say, I just don't happen toâ" Your voice failed somewhere in the middle of it, because he'd chosen that exact moment to press his mouth just under your ear, and the rest of the sentence collapsed into nothing.
He laughed against your throat. You felt it everywhere.
"That's okay." Low, and warm, and so unbearably fond that it did more damage than any of it. "You don't have to say anything else but my name, pretty girl."
Absolutely not.
You had spent years not giving this boy the satisfaction of unnerving you and you were not about to start now, so you did what you always did. You shoved at his shoulder. You got a hand up between you. You told him, with what was left of your dignity, that he was insufferable and smug and that he could get off you right this second.
He didn't move.
He let you push. He let you get the whole performance out, patient and unbothered, one brow raised like he was waiting politely for you to finish. And then he caught your wrist, drew it up and pressed his mouth to the inside of it, and you felt the fight go out of you all at once.
"You done?" he asked.
You were done.
"Kook."
"There she is." His eyes closed for a second â actual relief, like he'd been holding his breath for years. "One more time."
"Jungkook."
And that did it. His hands found the hem of your shirt and yours found bare skin, the warm cut of his waist, the last scraps of who's-winning and who's-in-control burning off somewhere between one breath and the next.
You'd spent so long bracing against him, sure that giving in would feel like losing.
It turned out it felt nothing like losing at all.
You couldn't help the shudder that coursed through you when Jungkook found your neck again, only this time instead of peppered kisses, he nipped you right behind your jaw and sucked, god help it, you keened.
You felt him freeze, before doing it again to the other side and you were already falling apart. You had no idea how you were going to survive when once again he was barely touching you.
"Noona, you and these noises," he breathed against you, sliding his hands down until they laid flat on the desk on either side of you, still caging you in but giving you both a moment. "I'm not going to lie, its taking every thing in me right now not to take you right here on this desk. ButâŠI'm not moving faster than what you are comfortable with. We can take this as slow as you need. I don't want you to think that this is all its gonna be. I was serious when I said I want to keep you too. I want to do this right. You deserve that. We can stop here if you want. It might kill me a little butâ"
"âWho said I wanted to stop?" You had been half listening, still in a Jungkook induced haze but when the words we can stop here if you want registered, something in you woke up just for that moment and ran out in oncoming traffic.
Jungkook for his part was momentarily gobsmacked before it finally clicked that you had given him a green light.
And then, the whole world shifted as he pounced.
His lips crushed against yours and you felt it down to your toes, before his hands fell to your hips and scooted you to the edge of the desk so effortlessly you gasped against his lips, and then you felt him hard and pulsing against your thigh. When he pulled away he groaned at the feel of you, rolling his hips helplessly.
"Thank god, cause I really didn't know how I was going to make it through the night, knowing that you would be sleeping in that bed, aching and wet and not doing a damn thing about it."
"Well now you can." You replied egging him on, his words fully activating your horny lizard brain that had been waiting for its time to shine. "So what are you gonna to do about it?"
His chuckle was downright wicked as one of his hand worked its up under your shirt and took hold of one of your breasts, his thumb sweeping back and forth over the hardened nipple through your bra, coaxing a surprised gasp.
"Do you want me to tell you or show you? Or both? I'm pretty good at multitasking."
You whimpered in response.
"Both? Ok I got you. Put your arms around me for a moment sweetheart." His tone left no room for argument and you immediately did what you were told. He lifted you for only two seconds and boom your shorts were tossed clear across the room. "Oh fuckâŠ." he moaned and you pulled away to see what it was that had him sounding so wrecked only to see him hungrily eyeing you between your legs.
"Noona," he breathed, mesmerized by the sight. "You are fucking soaked, look at you. So wet I can smell itâŠ.fuck that is so hot. Can't believe this is all for me."
You knew he'd be a menace but there was nothing that could've prepared you for how needy he'd sound at just the sight of your wet panties, and you felt another pull in your core at his perusal of it.
"Jungkook, please." You were reduced to two word sentences now, your hands sliding up and down his back.
"Yes, pretty girl I'll take care of you. Do me a favor though and take this off." he instructed, tugging at your shirt. You wasted no time in removing it, your skin already itching for it to come offâand without him asking you reached behind and undid your bra, tossing it along with your shirt. His eyes darkened as he took you in, zoning in on your breasts and peaked nipples, screaming for his touch. "I didn't even have to ask, good girl."
He then bent down to take one nipple in his mouth, alternating between sucking, and flicking it with his tongue and you arched with a sound so high pitched it was mostly air as it escaped through your parted lips. You barely had time to take another breath before his other hand found its way to your parted legs, his thumb pressing the seam of of you through your panties, before pushing your panties to the side and sliding his fingers in between your sodden folds, to which he audibly groaned.
"Fuck Y/N, its just dripping out of you." He hissed, mouth coming off your breast to look at his hand and then instantly switching over to the the other breast, eyes closing as he savored the taste of you there, too. "How did you know that I wanted to suck on these pretty tits and play with this wet pussy, hm?"
His mouth was atrocious and you found that you loved every second of it.
"I still can't stop thinking about you in the truck, noona. I'm never gonna get over it. Knowing that you were this wet, so desperate to come that all it took for you was me rubbing the seam of your jeans over this fat little clit you got right here." He said this right as he pressed directly on your clit, and this time you did cry out because finally, finally his hand was right were you needed him the most.
"Oh my god Jungkook fuckâŠthat's so goodâŠyesss."It came out of you in a choked moan as he continued to circle your clit, dipping down every so often to your entrance to wet the tip of his thumb before circling it again and again.
"You want my fingers noona? Or do you want my tongue?"
Your lizard brain was fully in control at this point.
"I want your dick. In me, NOW."
At this he laughed.
"Nope, not ready yet." You groaned, starting to get pissed off.
"Dammit Kook, why the fuck are you doing this to meeee"
At this he lightly slapped your pussy, not enough to hurt but it jolted you all the same.
"After all the shit you've put me through over the years? Nah, I'm taking my time to enjoy this."
You almost cried when you felt his fingers leave your folds, only to find yourself in the air as he swiftly lifted you up, your legs crossing around his waist as he walked you both back to the bed, before laying you on your back and crawling up over you. Two seconds later your panties were a long lost memory as he yanked them down your legs and tossed them across the room. Your legs being opened by his blazing palms were the only warning you got before his hand was in between your legs.
"You never answered my question noonaâfingers or tongue?"
You were reduced to whimpers again, but this time Jungkook was pretty fluent with your noises.
"Both?" He grinned, wickedly "Ok, I got you."
And then that's when you died.
Actually died, because next thing you knew his head was between your legs, and he breathed you in before curving the flat of his tongue up against the underside of your clit before ending with a flick. And then, then as if that wasn't enough to kill you, he slid not one but two fingers inside of you, pumping them in time with his tongue flicking.
"Mmm," he groaned in between flicks and sucking around your clit, utterly transfixed by the feel and taste of you, "You taste so fucking good noona. And you take my fingers so well. You're doing so good for me. Might just let you come like this. You want that? Hmm?"
You braved a look down at his words, and the sight that met you was so filthy, his big eyes meeting yours, entirely fucked out and devouring youâand absolutely enjoying every second of it. Your legs were beginning to shake and you knew it wouldn't be long.
"KookâI-Iâ"
"âYes y/n, that's it"
"I'm sooo close , its really closeâŠ!" you gasped as you felt the tingle in the base of your spine, and the pull on your abdomen taking its mark.
"You can do it baby, give it to me again, I want it all."
And then he said the thing that would ruin you forever to anyone and anything else:
"You deserve it."
When it finally hit, it rushed through you like a wildfire and you cried out brokenly, legs flying up and out as wave after wave hit you, your core clenching so tight around his fingers he gasped at the feel of it. You vaguely registered a shocked, Oh shitâŠ.fuck noona. Oh my god. but you were still drifting through another dimension and didn't realized it had come from Jungkook. When you finally started to get your lungs working right, you blindly reached around for Jungkook's head, fully intending to thread your fingers through his hair as your mute form of thanks for what had to have been, hands down, the best orgasm of your life. Only to find, when your hand reached him, his hair completely soaked.
What the fuck?
You propped yourself up on your shoulders to get a better look, only to quickly cover your mouth in shock.
Jungook was still as a statue, his eyes glazed over, and entirely drenched. Like he had dunked his head in a pool of water and had just come up for air.
"Jungkookâ?" you squeaked, suddenly afraid you had broken him, because he still wasn't moving.
"Y/N"
"Yes" He finally moved, but only slightly as he tilted his head with a look of disbelief.
"Did that just happen?" He looked down at his hands, that were entirely coated with your slick and he groaned, so deeply you felt it vibrate throughout your body. "Fuck, it did, it really did. Y/N you fucking squirted all over me."
You were mortified.
"Oh my god Kook, I'm so sorry! I didn't knowâthat's never happened before I-I'm soâ"
"âNow why the fuck are you apologizing Y/n?" Jungkook looked at you full on and that's when it registered, and you appraised the hunger in his eyes as they swept over your body. "Don't you dare apologize, that was hottest fucking thing I've ever seen in my life."
And he was on you in an instant, his hand grabbing your chin with his palm on your neck, lips finding yours once again.
"You were so fucking beautiful, coming apart for me like that. You did so good,"
He took his weight off you for a moment only to tug on his shorts, pulling them halfway down before kicking them the rest of the way off, and you heard it, the heavy sounding smack against skin before you saw it. He hadn't been wearing boxers and his manhood sprung straight to attention once the shorts came off, and you audibly gasped.
Holy shit, its huge!
Jungkook's laugh cut though your thoughts.
"Thanks noona, I grew it myself."
Oh shit, you said it out loud. Again.
"Shut the fuck up Kook." Your cheeks blazed and wasn't just from the afterglow.
Laughing, he climbed over you again, and you moaned at the feel of him, hot and heavy between your legs.
He groaned at the feel of you too before dropping his head down to your shoulder.
"Dammit, I didn't think about protection. Fuck."
"Kook, we're fine. Im clean and I'm on birth control."
He instantly shot up.
"You're on the pill??
"No, IUD, just put it in last yearâgood for five.
"Oh damn, ok yeah Im good too, I can show you my mychart if you wantâ"
"âYou know good and well you are not about to get up from between my legs to show me a mychart Kook. I trust you."
At this he looked at you again, the gaze sweeping over turning fond for a moment.
"You look so beautiful like this you know," He brushed the hair off of your sweat slicked face. "How did I get so lucky."
You inwardly preened at his praise, breath catching as the moment passed through both of you.Â
I'm the lucky one
And then you couldn't help but arch up underneath him again as you felt the pulse coming back between your legs and the weight of him there making you lightheaded. You rolled your hips against him, fingers curving into his back.
That pulled a strangled groan out of him and he quickly thrust back against your heat.
"You said I wasn't ready earlier." You mentioned, suddenly feeling a little anxious at the size of him and putting two and two together. "Do you think we need any thingâ"
He cut you off as he reached down in between your legs, before sliding his fingers into you once more, pumping only a couple times before grinding his palm against you. Then without warning, he pulled his hand away and slapped it down on your belly, and slid it down, your slick covering the entire expanse of your abdomen, with residue still shining on his wrist. Your jaw dropped as he pinned you with a hooded look that had you quaking.
"We don't need anything love. I know I'll slide right in. Easy. You can take it."
Fuck if that wasn't the hottest thing you had ever seen/heard. You clenched at the thought of him inside of you and nerves started melting away.
"And you will take it. Inch by inch. Its yours. You ready for it now noona? You ready to take this dick inside of you?"
He rolled into you again and your eyes rolled back at the feel of him, teasing your clit with the head, as the rest of him slid through your parted folds.
"Yes, Kook please, yes let me have it. I wanna feel you inside of me."
"Then you can have it."
And with that he pulled back just enough to line himself up before slowly pushing forward and finally, finally sinking into you.
You both groaned simultaneously at the feel of him sliding into you inch by inchâ and he was right, you were still so wet that he was able to slide all the way without hesitation.
"Oh my godddd." You moaned at the thick feel of him, finally inside, and you already felt your walls fluttering at the fullness.
"Mmmm, I knew you'd be able to take me in one go. Good girl." He took a moment to catch his breath as he dropped his head into the crook of your neck "You feel so fucking goody/n, I'm trying so hard not to lose it. Give me just a minute and then I can give us both what we need."
"O-ok." You let out a shuddering breath, smoothing your palms against his back.
A moment passed and then you felt itâ a quick pulse of his hips. And you knew that was only the warning shot.
Because then he pulled back all the way, and then slammed back into you with a trust so powerful you slid six inches up the bed.
"Oh shit!" It came out of you automatically, because it all it took was one thrust and you were effectively ruined to all other men for life, because this was it. "Oh fuckâŠKook oh my godddâŠ!"
Jungkook was equally affected, mouth dropped open in awe as he watched himself sliding in and out of you.
"Goddamn baby, you feel insane around my dickâhow does it feel for you?" He hissed as he leaned over you pressing a breathless kiss just behind your ear.
Words were failing you, there's no way he expected you to respond verballyânot when he was now pounding you down in the bed, the smack of your bodies meeting amplified by the slick smeared in between your legs and up over your lower stomach.
You whimpered once more, because it was too good for words.
"Speechless again huh?" He rasped against you ear. "Don't hold back now. You finally got me where you wanted me earlier when all you could do was moan into my shoulder while your pussy clenched around nothing, wishing it could be filled up instead."
Your legs tightened in response to his words, and a strangled moan broke lose when suddenly he rolled his hips, grinding his pelvis so it caught the underside of your clit with each pass.
Omg this might just do it for me!
You felt utterly feral, and probably was drooling at this point but you didn't care one bit cause the way it was building up had you shaking in your legs. But right when you felt like you would tumble into a another orgasm, Jungkook suddenly yanked you up from under him before flipping on his back, lifting you up over him.
"Whaaaa, Kook whatâ"
He looked completely fucked out as he stared you down and you clenched around nothing.
"I want you to sit on it. And take this dick just how you want it." You blinked owlishly at him, stunned. "Now. PleaseâŠI need you to sit on it. Don't make me beg cause I will at this point."
He didn't have to tell you twice.
Within seconds you were lining him up before dropping back down and you both cried out. He felt even deeper at this angle and you feel yourself getting right back to where you left off, rolling your hips over him as you leaned forward slightly, locking eyes with him.
As much as you loved Jungkook putting you damn near through the mattress, you found yourself enthralled by how he looked underneath you, his hands gripping your hips so tightly that he would surely leave marks. He would helplessly let go of a hip to reach up and fondle one of your breasts, tugging and pulling on your nipple before grabbing your hips again and meeting your rotations with one of his own.
And it was this that finally pushed you closer to the edge, your hips erratically sliding back and forth as you felt your orgasm approaching like a freight truck.
"Yes, that's it pretty girl," Jungkook groaned underneath you, eyes blown out and dark as he watched you swirl your hips over him in quick circles. "Take what you need and cum all over me again, yes take it all it's yours"
That finally does it and you explode around him with a cry so forceful it's nearly a scream, before elongating into a broken moan, completely losing it over him as your entire body shook, legs jerking out to the side.
You were crying, you knew you were because that was the most incredible thing you had ever felt âon top of already experiencing another incredible orgasm, in the same day.
Jungkook talks you through it, praising you, telling you did amazing and felt incredible around him. Once you felt your senses come back, you found yourself flipped on your back again.
"You are so fucking incredible y/n, the way you came apart on top me âŠI will never forget it." He moaned it into your neck, his pumps now erratic as he was getting close. "Please, Im so close Y/N, I need to come inside inside you, can I? Please let meâ"
"âYes Kook yes, please cum inside me," You moan into his ear and he shudders at the sound of it. "Please fill me up, I need it, you fill me up so good I need it all."
"Oh fuckâŠo-oh fuck, Y/N shit I'm about toâ"
With one last thrust his back locked in place as he finally released inside of you with a broken groan, pulsing hot over and over and you shivered as you felt him helplessly roll one last time into you before collapsing on top of you. His hand found yours after a moment, capturing it in his, his face still buried in between you breasts.
You stayed like that for a several moments, completely blissed out.
And then he finally opened his mouth.
"Knew it." It was all he said at first.
"Knew what?"
"That I was man enough you." He let it settle, and you found the fight had been effectively fucked out of you.
"Also," he continued. "That Deb had good instincts."
The responding smack to his chest from you happened so fast it didn't even register until you felt the sting of your own hand.
Well, maybe you still had a just a little fight left in you.
âââ
Later â much later, the AC still rattling, his heartbeat slowing under your ear â the entire room lit up.
Jungkook's phone was going off on the nightstand, buzzing against the wood like a hornet in a jar.
You both looked at it.
JAY â and underneath, the four most terrifying words in the English language:Â would like to FaceTime.
What happened next could not fairly be described as a decision. It was closer to what happens when somebody drops a pan of hot grease.
You went off the side of the bed. Not gracefully. You took the entire comforter with you and landed in the gap between the mattress and the wall with a thud that rattled the lamp, and your ankle informed you, immediately and at volume, that this had been a poor choice.
"Do not answer that," you hissed from the floor.
"If I don't answer he calls your mom."
He had a point. Your brother had exactly one setting.
"Then fix your face."
"What's wrong with my faceâ"
"You look likeâ" you gestured wildly at the entirety of him from your position on the carpet, "âthat!"
He accepted the call.
"KOOK." Your brother's voice filled the room at a volume that suggested he had never once in his life considered that other people might be asleep. "Bro. Where are you guys, I've been texting since sixâ"
"Car died." Jungkook's voice had gone flat and bored and faintly put-upon, and you had to admit, from the floor, that it was a stunning piece of work. "We're in some town. Motel."
"A motel."
"Yeah."
A pause.
"...Both of you?"
You stopped breathing.
"We had to sleep somewhere," Jungkook said.
"...Right." A beat. "And what's wrong with the car?"
"Battery." A pause. "Just needed a jump, probably."
And that â that â was the thing that got you. Because it did not just need a jump. A jump would turn it over and it would not hold, the man had said so himself, that was the entire reason you were STRANDED here overnight instead of miles down the road, and something utterly beyond your control took the wheel.
"It does not just need a jump, the cells are shot, that's why we'reâ" You heard yourself. You closed your mouth. Too late. From the floor. Out loud.
The silence that followed had a physical weight to it.
Jungkook slowly, slowly looked down over the edge of the bed at you with an expression of such profound disbelief that you wanted to die.
"...Was that my sister?" said Jay.
"No."
"That was absolutely my sister â in your room."
"It's the TV."
"Kook, it is two in the morning."
"It's a late show."
"Put her on."
And so you surfaced â hair a catastrophe, comforter clutched to your chest, arranging your features into what you desperately hoped read as a woman who has been asleep in her own separate bed, alone, for hours, and not a woman who had all of her flabbers thoroughly gasted by the man next to her.
"Hi," you said.
"Hi," said your brother.
There was a long pause.
"So the car should be ready around ten," you offered.
"Uh huh."
"...Ten-thirty at the latest."
"Uh huh." And Jay had gone quiet in a way your brother had never once gone quiet in his life. You watched it arrive on his face in stages, like a raincloud coming over a hill. "Cool," he said. "Cool cool cool."
"Jayâ"
"No, it'sâ" Your brother's face was attempting several expressions at once, none of which were compatible with the others. "It's good. This is good. I'm good. Yep."
"Jay."
"I told him to say something." It came out strangled. "Years ago. I told him that, I saidâ"
"Okay, so thenâ"
"âI didn't think he'd actually do it!" He had passed straight through betrayal and come out somewhere near hysteria. "Four years! Four years of you doing absolutely nothing! That was just how it was, that was the one thing I could count onâ"
"Not anymore," Jungkook said.
"DON'T SAY IT LIKE THAT."
"Jay, keep your voiceâ"
"And you." The camera swung back to you, and your brother stared at you like a man who had come home to find his furniture rearranged. "You. You called him a gremlin. At Christmas. In front of Mom."
"That wasâ"
"He ate an entire pie at that table and you called him a gremlin, and now I'm supposed toâ" He stopped. He put both hands over his face and held them there. You could hear him breathing.
Jungkook, beside you, had gone very still, and when you glanced over you found that the smugness was entirely gone. He was watching that screen like the answer actually mattered to him.Â
Then your brother dropped his hands. Squared his shoulders. And looked at the pair of you with the grim, hollow-eyed resolve of a man being wheeled into surgery.
"Okay," he said. "Okay. I love you both. I support this completely. And I am never going to think about it again for as long as I live."
"Jayâ"
"Goodnight."
He hung up on you.
Three seconds later the phone buzzed. Then buzzed again. Then a third time.
And then, after a longer pause, one more:
Jungkook read that one twice. Something in his shoulders came down about an inch.
"Yeah," he said, mostly to himself, and typed something back you didn't get to see.
Then he set the phone down and looked at you.
And caught it â whatever your face was doing. That flicker. The old reflex, the one that had run all day: this is the part where it goes wrong. Jay knowing made it real, and real was the thing that had scared you from the jump.
âHey.â He hooked a finger under your chin, tipped it up, waited until you actually looked at him. âI know that face. Quit it.â
âIâm not doing a face.â
âYes you are.â His thumb moved once along your jaw, and the smirk went out of him. âYou are freaking out and trying to act like you aren't, which we both know you're terrible at. Your brother knows⊠and the sunâs still coming up, and Iâm still gonna be here in the morning reminding you that this happened.â His voice dropped to something quieterw. âI told you. Iâm keeping you. That wasnât a tonight thing.â
Your throat did something complicated.
ââŠOkay,â you managed.
âOkay.â He kissed your forehead, so gentle it nearly undid you worse than anything else all night. âNow go to sleep. Weâve got a four-hundred-mile drive tomorrow and youâre gonna be a nightmare if you donât.â
This mother fucker.
âIâm gonna be a nightmare?" You pulled back to look at him. âYeah ok. That is genuinely rich, coming from the doofus who broke the car.â
âI didnât break the car, the batteryââ
ââCome on you KNEW about the batteryââ
ââand I fixed the batteryââ
âYou did NOT fix the battery, thereâs a man in a garage fixing the battery, you jumped it and lied about it and drove me into a desertââ
âOkay, you gotta stop bringing up the desert, weâve been over the desertââ
âI will bring up being in this damn desert every single day for the rest of your natural life,â you informed him, and something about the words landed on both of you at the same time â the rest of your life â and you watched him clock it, watched the slow grin start, and felt your own face go hot.
âYeah?â he said, insufferable, delighted, already impossible. âThe rest of my life, huh?â
âThatâs notâ you know what I meantââ
âNo, no. Say it again. For the record.â
âGoodnight, Jungkook.â
âYouâre keeping me too,â he said, smug into your hair as he pulled you down against him, and you did not dignify it with a response.
But you didnât move away, either.
And in the morning, the car would be fixed, and youâd fight about who was driving the whole way back.
Some things werenât ever going to change.
Thank God.

inspired an old Tumblr prompt âDonât look at me, this is not my faultâ. and then it just took off from there. It was only supposed to be 1000 words, lol nope. Itâs now a two shot.
this story has been living rent-free in my brain for a very long time, and i'm so excited to finally share it with you. Its also posted on AO3 here
expect lots of bickering, unresolved feelings, and enough sexual tension to make everyone involved question their life choices.
enjoy! âĄ
âââ ââ ââ â âââ
Stranded
âDonât look at me, this is not my fault.â
âThis is not YOUR fault??â You grit out as you suddenly jerk around in your seat to face your traveling partner, fixing him with an icy glare that somehow managed to run his blood cold, but also had him drawing the corner of his lip between his teeth as he studied your shaking form. You let out a sharp exhale before continuing. âLit-er-ally everything about this situation points to you and your complete lack of basic common sense.â
He narrowed his eyes at your insult.
âY/NâŠjust chill out, ok? Lemme think.â
âDonât hurt yourself now.â You shot out, unable to resist.
Used to your remarks, he chose to ignore you as he leaned on the steering wheel, pondering what to do next. After a few moments, he sat up, rubbed his hands together and shook them slightly in a silent prayer before he reached down to turn the key in the ignition.
For the 11th time since the car had come to a halt.
As expected, the car sputtered and groaned before shutting off with a sickening pop.
âShit.â He muttered, and you began to clap slowly.
âWow, that was...that was great. Really impressive...I donât know why we didnât think of doing that before. Oh...wait...we just did.â
âI thought it was gonna work this time.â He said as he ran his hand through his hair, tilting his head to the side in slight disbelief.
You shot him a dirty look. Was he serious??
âAnd why would you think that when it clearly didnât work the first ten times?â
âUhâŠbecause it worked before I came and picked you up this morning?â he stated matter of factly.
âWHAT?â You ground out as the gears started whirling in your head.
âWell actually no,â he amended. âWhat I did was kick the front of the car a couple times and then started it. Worked like a charm.â
âSo wait a minute, wait a minute.â you continued, sucking in a sharp breath as you tried to quell the anger you felt rising to the surface. âYou mean to tell me that this car wasnât working this morning?â
You could see Jungkookâs mouth open and shut as he took in your now shaking form and considered that continuing to try and defend himself would not be the best course of action at that moment.
âAnd you thought it was a good idea to embark on a 12 hour road trip in THAT SAME CAR??â You nearly screeched as you felt your anger completely overtake you.
His eyebrows shot up in surprise as you, in a bout of frustrated rage, suddenly grabbed the welcome brochure/map you had acquired via your last pit stop off of the dashboard and whipped it at his chest. You had been aiming at his head but in your ire your sweaty hands had failed to assist your accuracy in facial assault.
âOww! Jesus Y/Nâ he yelped, entirely out of habit as you knew that it totally didnât hurt. He held up his hands as he attempted to salvage the situation. âLook, I know youâre probably mad and this isnât what you had anticipated happening butââ
â--I. told. You. from JUMP that it was a bad FREAKING IDEA to go down the BLOCK, let alone across THE COUNTRY in this RATCHET ass rattling Box on wheels you call a VEHICLE that can literally die any minute....or worse yet--just completely combust!! But I shouldâve known youâd attempt this level of dumassery!!!â You screeched, entirely fed up with thisâŠman child in front of you and all of the stupid sheepish looks he seemed to have etched permanently on his face.
With schooled features not betraying an ounce of the fear he felt in your now looming presence, he quickly shot back
âWell if you thought that it was a bad idea from jump and you still got in then what does that make you hmm? Perhaps... wait for it...an even bigger dumbass?â he sang out the last bit before braving a satisfied smirk.
âYou know just as well as I do that Iâm only doing this for Jay, believe me if I had another way to get back to school you best believe I would have leaped at the 1st chance.â
Jay, being your younger brother and Jungkookâs best friend of nearly a decade, who had stayed back at the university the three of you now attended together, hundreds of miles away from the hometown you now journeyed back from.
And if werenât for the inescapable fact that your brother had your car for the summer after receiving the opportunity of a lifetime as an intern at a major production company, one that a film major would be an absolute fool to turn down, there was absolutely no way in hell youâd willingly be stuck with Jungkook on the return trip.
But yet, here you were. And if this boy didnât stop fiddling with the turn signal, switching the knob back and forth in a rather annoying manifestation of his current state of bewilderment at the carâs âsuddenâ breakdown, you were going to LOSE it.
<CLICK>
<CLICK>
<CLICK--
â--Jungkook if you click that signal one more time I swear by everything holy I will make you a mouth breather for the rest of your life!â You finally screeched, and his eyes widened, stunned at the sheer force you suddenly revealed as you reached out to grab a fistful of his prized obsidian hair, yanking the taller boy down so his ear could be mere inches from your mouth.
The sheer force behind your voice was enough to have JungKookâs ears ringing, but with his ear now literally centimeters away from your lips, the boy howled in pain as your shouted words made direct impact.
âWhat the hell?! Are you trying to kill me woman?â he cried out as he struggled against your hold.
âTrying isnât exactly the word that comes to mind, but if your demise comes accidentally then that might be fortunate.â
Fixing him with another glare you reluctantly released him, sucking in a harsh breath as you attempted (and failed) to regain your composure.
âSo⊠yeah this is just greatâ You continued as you dramatically fell back into the passengerâs seat. âI didnât plan on dying today, but I suppose if I had to pick a place, having the backdrop of the middle of freaking nowhere be the last thing I see, along with your ugly mug is exactly how I planned on going out. â
With that you angrily clicked the release button of your seatbelt, the buckle clanking loudly as it resumed its unlatched position. Since the car was clearly losing its fight for its life you propped open your door, as the climbing heat was sure to become stifling the longer you both sat without circulating A/C.
From the time he was literally dragged into your childhood home by your brother, Jungkookâs presence was one that had always lingered around you.
You remember the summer when the Jeons had moved in next door; the summer that had been so unbearably hot you could dump an ice cold bucket of water over your head and be dry in 10 minutes. So hot that between the hours of 11am to 4pm you were pretty much confined to the air conditioned spaces your home had to offer. And with that being so you and your younger brother Jay had found yourselves in a prolonged state of suffocating boredomâ tantamount to torture at the young ages you had been.
âMan I wish Jeremy hadnât moved away,â Jay sighed as he clicked through the stations on the living room television. âAt least he had a pool that we could be swimming in right now, this just sucks, I hate being in this house.â
âYeah, Iâm sure Jeremy would love to hear that you miss using his pool more than him. Just horrible.â You clucked disapprovingly at him before resuming reading your novel. You shared his sentiments of disliking being stuck at home and you usually tolerated it a lot better than he didâŠbut his complaining was seriously about to drive you up the wall.
However his moaning and groaning had been cut short as the front doorbell suddenly reverberated throughout the house, and Jay, not being one to miss an opportunity to escape the house, had bolted for the door.
When he swung it open, there stood a scrawny looking boy, his jet black hair plastered to his forehead and his hand still raised mid knock. His eyes, wide from the shock of your brother literally whipping the door open in his excitement, were some of the biggest you had ever seen.
âHi!â Your brother had nearly shouted and you winced. âWho are you?â
The boy, clearly not used to the enthusiasm your brother possessed, started to stutter, completely unprepared.
âI-I...uh...Hi...uhhhhâŠ.Iâm...from...o-over there.â He lamely pointed in a vague direction of what you would assume to be his house.
âHuh?â Jay responded, slightly confused. The boy sighed shakily, his nervousness apparent.
âI-I mean, uh, Iâm new here. My family just moved in next door. And my mom kicked me out and told me if I didnât make any friends I couldnât come back in.â he confessed, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
You, who had been eavesdropping the whole time, snorted.
Your brother, beaming at the kid, asked him âDo you play Mario Kart?â
The boy blinked.
âUh...yeah?â
âYou wanna play?â Jay offered. âIâve got an extra controller...you can use the wireless one if you want?â
The boy blinked again.
âR-really?â âYeah! Come on! Plus we got the AC cranked all the way up so it's super cold in here.â
With that your brother practically dragged the poor boy in the house before slamming the door, and the noise attracted the attention of your mother, who had been in the kitchen working on another one of her baking âexperimentsâ.
âJay, I know you are not about to walk out that door in this 100 degree weather,â she called out before strolling into the living room. She paused at the sight of your brother with the skinny boy he had just met, standing in your living room. âOh, whoâs this?â
âOh hey, this is my new friend momâhe just moved in next door, can we pull out the Gamecube so we can play Mario Kart? Pleaseeee?â Your brother asked, and you watched as the corners of the boyâs lips turned up slightly at your brotherâs declaration of him being his newest friend.
âWhy hello Jayâs new friend, itâs nice to meet you. And does your friend have a name?â She asked with a warm smile.
"Of course he does, this is...this is...uh...â Your brother trailed off as he then realized he had forgotten about that important detail. He leaned in only to whisper loudly, âAye...whatâs your name?â
The boy cleared his throat.
âItâs Jungkook.â
âJungâŠwhat?â
âJung-KOOK.â
Your brother blinked.
âWhat kinda name is that?â
âItâs Korean.â
âOh...ok.â He pulled away from his ear. âHe says his name is Jungkook.â He announced.
Your mother chuckled slightly at your brotherâs antics before turning back to the boy you now knew to be Jungkook.
Do your parents know you are here?â she asked him.
âUh yes, they sent me over to introduce myself.â
âOk, well you are welcome to come over anytime Jungkook.â She assured him.
The boy, not used to the amount of attention he was getting, shyly murmured out a quick thank you before turning back towards your brother. Your mother gave your brother the okay to pull out his game system, and he dragged Jungkook by the arm again as he excitedly started showing him his set up.
You at that point were not too thrilled at the prospect of all the loud noise that was sure to ensue with them playing video games, so you then announced that you were going to go upstairs to your room.
Jungkook, who had not noticed your presence up until then, jumped nearly a mile high at the sound of your voice. He turned around only to see you rising off the couch on the other side of the living room, and when his eyes met yours they grew impossibly wide before he quickly turned back, red starting to creep across his cheeks.
âOh yeah, thatâs my older sister ___. You donât have to worry about her though.â Jae assured Jungkook as he had noticed his reaction to your presence. He leaned in to whisper, loudly, again. âSheâs a reallllllly big nerd.â
Jungkook only chose to nod in response, his sudden bout of timidity rendering him temporarily mute.
Rolling your eyes, you gathered up your small stack of books, books youâd likely finish by the end of the day, off of the coffee table before making your way to the stairwell.
âHave fun you guys.â You called out as you strolled past them and you paused by the boy who appeared to have taken a sudden interest in the ornate oriental rug that spanned across your living room floor.
Not one to be rude to house guests, you gave a slight nod of acknowledgement towards him before greeting him personally.
âNice to meet you, Jungkook.â
You watched as his eyes darted up from the floor to meet yours ever so briefly before they shot back down again as he muttered âY-yeah...s-same...s-same to...youâŠâ
You chuckled slightly, and your brother looked up from his place in front of the tv, scowling at you.
âI thought you were leaving...good-BYE, Â___.â he dismissed. Faster than either one of them could blink, you had swung up a foot only to shove Jay with it, and your brother went tumbling to the ground with a yelp. Jungkook, having witnessed the entire exchange, owlishly blinked several times before braving a stunned look at you.
âSorry you had to witness that kid. I promise, Iâm usually not that violent.â You said with a sheepish grin.
And with that you sauntered up the stairs, not noticing the pair of wide, intrigued eyes that followed you all the way up, step by step.
From that day forward your brother and Jungkook had been inseparable, and you soon became accustomed to seeing the shy boy in and around your home. Your mother adored Jungkook, especially with how well-mannered he was around adults, and every so often she would ask your brother if he wanted to invite his little friend over so he could help taste test another practice batch of cookies. And Jungkook would be more than happy to oblige, sampling piece after piece of whatever assortment of confections your mother had whipped up for the day.
When school had resumed that next fall, you were pleasantly surprised to find that Jungkook had an older brother in your grade, JungHyun. You soon became casual acquaintances upon finding out that your younger siblings were brothers, and occasionally youâd find yourself over at the Jeonâs along with your brother since you had someone your age to talk to, and also as you had some common interests. But mostly youâd gripe about how much of a pain in the ass it was to be the older sibling of the two dorks you each happened to be related to.
As time went on you began to see the once painfully shy boy morph into a cheeky little brat, your brotherâs influence no doubt. And as a result, he who was once someone you saw as your brotherâs adorable little friend became your own personal irritant. You found yourself the victim of many pranks at the hands of Jungkook, again inspired by the influence of your brother, however Jay was nowhere near as crafty as Jungkook.
From fake tarantulas dropping on you from the doorway of your bedroom, to your shampoo being laced with purple food coloring, it seemed that as soon as he found out that you were easily startled, something truly evil awoke in Jungkook. As you had rapidly approached your senior year of high school, his affinity for tormenting and teasing you only grew, and at times you mourned the image you once had of the shy little boy who wouldnât harm a fly, now replaced by a literal demon.
âNoona...why are you so jumpy?â You swore was his favorite thing to say to you, usually after your nerves were rattled from whatever devious act he had carried out at your expense. That along with,âDonât tell me that you were actually scared.â
And he would have the smugest look on his face every time, so much so that you wanted to smack it
The time came and went and your high school days drew to a rapid close. You were planning on going off to university across the country, the prospect of which your mom vehemently opposed at first but soon came around to when she saw just how hard you worked to get in. With much fanfare your mom had thrown you a graduation party, with extended family and friends all coming to attend the festivities.
And had you known that that day would be the last time you would have seen Jungkook in person in over a year, you might have considered not entertaining the argument with him about the validity of table tennis as an official Olympic sport. And said argument may or may not have ended with a certain boy dumping the contents of what was left in the punch bowl over your head, announcing that someone needed to cool all the way down.
That be it may... you were certain that you were glad to finally...finally... have the boy out of your hair. You were an adult now, living life, keeping up with your ever-increasing course workload...you didnât have time to entertain the lives of the people you had left behind hundreds of miles away.
As stressful as it had been, you had considered your first year of university a success, and you had looked forward to your summer break back home. You hadnât made too many friends at university, which had been fine as you had plenty to keep you busy, but strangely enough you found yourself happily anticipating seeing your brother and his dorky sidekick.
You know... for old timesâ sake.
Only to discover that upon your arrival, said dorky sidekick was nowhere to be found, but rather he along with Jung Hyun was spending the summer back in Busan, their hometown in Korea.
So, summer flew by, after which you were pleasantly surprised to find your brother joining you at the same university, starting as a 1st yr.
You laid down the law immediately, and told Jay under no certain terms were you going to be bailing him out if he so much as thought of doing anything stupid as most young men in their freshman year of university were apt to do.
Another year flew by, and you barely made it through aliveâand you were eager to come back home.
You had finally been looking forward to your 1st summer completely devoid of coursework, and you had an entire two months completely mapped out with all the fun and relaxing summer- y things that you had wanted to do.
But of course, none of that happened.
So, your entire summer practically flew by, with your aspirations for it completely unfulfilled.
And, you hadnât anticipated the Jungkook factor.
And you had innocently assumed that since your brother had stayed back, there was no reason for you to be seeing much of Jungkook that summer.
Oh boy were you wrong.
You lost track of how many times you walked in your childhood home at night, after an evening shift at your part time job only to jump in fright at the sight of Jungkook, lazed across your living room couch with takeout boxes everywhere.
And every single time youâd screamed out âJesus Kook, what are you doing in my house again? Go home!â
He would always smirk at your reaction, before rising in a stretch. His response would always be the same. âYour mom let me in.â
Of course she freaking did. You honestly wouldnât have been surprised if she had slipped him his own personalized set of house keys at this point.
âBesides, I was gonna leave when you came back from work. So, since youâre here Iâm out⊠goodnight Y/N!â
And just like he would walk out of your living room, and out of the front door. And he would always leave the damn takeout boxes lying everywhere.
Despite seeing him way more than you would have liked, you really had no clue that Jungkook would be attending the same university as an incoming freshman until it was casually mentioned during one of your facetimes with Jay. And in that same conversation he had confirmed that he had all but volunteered you to carpool with Kook as he had never made the trip before. You instantly tried to back out of it but when you looked at flight prices, and then at your dwindling bank account you grudgingly agreed to accompany him.
But now, you were seriously regretting it.
In the present, several moments had passed in awkward silence as you tasked yourself to fixing your gaze forward, too done to look at the boy seated next to you. You could practically feel the heat from his eyes as he continued to stare at your profile, not saying anything as well.
But with all the years of knowing him, you knew that he wasnât one to back away from a confrontation without some kind of fight back. Not unless something was really bothering him.
A quick side glance confirmed that he seemed to be in some sort of deep thought as he continued to mull something over, his mouth forming a thin line as he pursed his lips.
âY/NâŠâ
You swore your eyes were going to fall as you rolled them for what seemed like the hundredth time that day.
âWhat do you want now Kookâ you sighed exasperated beyond belief.
You could see him poke his cheek out with his tongue, the way he always did when debating something in his mind. It was an action that always irked you, mainly because it not only emphasized his killer jawline (which was such a freaking waste on him) but it was distracting as heck.
âDo youâŠâ He trailed off as he paused to rub his neck.
You could feel your left eye start to twitch. âDo you really thinkâŠthatâŠIâm ugly?â
What.
WHAT.
Was this dude serious?!
âNo seriously, Y/N you were talking about how ugly I was, so I was just curious,â he continued completely ignoring the look on your face. âLike on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being absolutely chopped like⊠think Gollum from Lord of the Rings ugly vs 10 being like I dunno like take my panties nowâŠwhat would you rate me?â
âJungkookâ
âWhat?â
You took in a deep breath as if to clear your mind from all the stupid that had just tried to penetrate your headspace.
âNext time you say some stupid ass shit like you just said, Iâm slapping you. Like literally the dumbest shit walks out of your mouth at the worst possible time. We are stranded probably in the desert somewhere and you wanna know how likely I am to even remotely consider you attractive?! Right now, itâs .001 on a scale, ok? Because you CLEARLY donât get how this not the time for your bs!â
That was a blatant lie. If the rating was based purely on physical attractiveness alone, Jungkook was an 8âpossibly a 9 when he wore his favorite/your least favorite white button up jean and Timbs outfit combo.
He rolled his eyes, used to your dramatic outburst.
"One, just because its hot doesn't mean we are in a desert, there are literally trees every where--"
"--Do YOU see any people around here?" And as if to make your point, you spotted movement out of the corner of your eye. "I know you're lyin'--is that a TUMBLEWEED--?!"
"-- And two," He continued, ignoring you. "Why do you hate me so much?â
âI donât hate you.â You muttered as you rubbed your temples, checking your watch.
Had it been 30 minutes yet? You could have sworn that the tow truck company quoted 25 and there was no truck in sight.
âWell, you couldâve fooled me.â he murmured folding his arms like the petulant child he was. âI don't hate you, Kook.â You sighed as you pinched the bridge of your nose.
In all honesty you just always knew in the back of your mind just not to look at him. Of course you werenât blind, and you knew a lot of girls were attracted to him for supposedly valid reasonsâ
ââWhat do you mean you knew not to look at me? Why couldnât you look at me?â His eyes narrowed as he uncrossed his arms.
What in the Freudian slip. Did you really just say that part? Out loud?
Shit.
You chose to completely ignore the way your heart jumped at his words. Straightening up your shoulders, you schooled your features but youâre not quite brave enough to look him in the eye.
âWell duh youâre just a kid and my kid brotherâs friend at that, I literally remember you doing stupid shit like farting into soda cans and lighting matches.â
At this he shot you a bemused look, before shaking his head slightly.
âI donât know why you keep acting like we arenât close, like we havenât known each other for years. I mean, yeahâŠyour brother is like another brother to me, but youâre lying to yourself if you think that the only dynamic weâve ever had.â He then looked at you pointedly. âBesides, I havenât been a kid for quite some time now and you know it.â
âAnd whatâs that supposed to mean?â You found the words shooting out before you could stop yourself, and you inwardly winced when he smirked.
âWhat do you want it to mean noona?â
Nooooo, no no no no, you did NOT like the way his name for you just rolled off his tongue smoother than dripping honeyâthe involuntary shiver that just went down your spine was clearly one of disgust.
âOk, kidâŠanswer me thisâŠsince you are so grown tell me why you continue to make dumbass decisions like the one that got us in this situation, hmm?â
âWell answer me this,â he mimicked your voice almost perfectly much to your annoyance. âWhy do you feel like you donât make just as many dumb decisions, if not more than I do? You think you got your shit all figured out but truthfully youâre BSâing your way through life even more than I am.â
And this was why he pissed you off.
Because no matter how many years you lived, how many more experiences you had, even though you felt like you were more knowledgeable than him in many waysâJungkook had always had the uncanny ability to see straight through you and read you like a freaking book. You bit your lip, and you forced yourself turn away from his suddenly intense gaze. He was not doing this right now; this was not okâŠ
You were not ok with this.
He needed to stop.
âWell, whatever you want to keep telling yourself, thatâs fine.â He continued, disregarding your current state of inner turmoil. âIf it helps you sleep better at night, cool. But lemme just say that I have no self-imposed limitations as to where and upon whom I can look.â
You felt like your breath just got knocked out of you. He wasnât saying what you thought you were sayingâŠwas he?
You practically could feel his eyes burning into the side of your face and it took everything in you to resist the suddenly dire urge to turn back to face him again.
So you busied yourself with your fingers in your lap, twisting and turning them over until you got to the point where your curiosity finally overtook your rationale and against your better judgment you slowly looked up.
You had never seen Jungkook look like this before.
You felt instant warmth seep deep into the core of your being, and immediately you felt the strangest urge to cover yourself because the way he regarded you at that moment had you feeling totally exposed.
And in that moment, you knew that you were utterly screwed.
If you were truly honest with yourself, you knew that this current scenario playing out before you was one that you had probably dreamed about during a night or two, before waking up and literally shaking the thoughts from your head surrounding a possibleâŠanything with Jungkook.
BecauseâŠhelloâŠyounger brotherâs best friend?
And no matter how attractive you were finally willing to admit he really was, the ick factor was just too much to overcome. Not to mention, your brother would kill you for corrupting Jungkook.
Wait, corrupting?! What the--where did that thought even come from? You barely were willing to admit you were attracted to him on a strictly physical basis and now your mind was making gigantic leaps from heâs cute to possible defilement of the boy?
Oh God you needed to get out of this car, and you needed to get out fast. The heat was clearly starting to affect your ability to make sound and rational decisions. As you came back from the brief trip you took in the expanse of your mind you realized he was still staring at youâŠ
What the hell?
He wasnât even attempting to look away and it was freaking you out.
âJungkook?â You wanted to kick yourself at how squeaky your voice sounded as you snapped your fingers in front of his face. Quickly slapping your hand away, he pressed a finger to your scowling lips in response.
âCould you just close your mouth for one second Y/n?â He sighed, punctuated with a slight shake of his head. He was completely unaware of the internal war now waging in the deep, devious recesses of your mind as you fought the sudden overwhelming urge to lick his finger.
By sheer willpower did you manage to resist, mimicking his earlier action with a slap of your own as you spat out, âWell could you stop staring at me like a freakinâ weirdo?â
âDonât tell me what to do.â He snapped and you forgot how to breathe a second because did this boy just snap at you?? âBesides, didn't I just tell you that I have no problem with looking at people?â
You were so mentally overloaded right now it wasnât funny, and his proximity wasnât. helping. AT. ALL.
âYou little shââ
ââHa! Thereâs absolutely nothing little about me, try again.â he grinned cheekily as he bit down on his lip holding back a laugh.
And that was freaking it as your mind instantly pulled up images at his insinuation that you thought you had erased from your mind.
I just canât...!
You were so done, and with that you shoved your door, swinging it wide open and got out without a moment of hesitation.
And you started to walk.
In 90 degrees plus weather. In the middle of nowhere.
You swore under your breath as you realized that the flimsy flip flops you donned were definitely not suited for the heat as you could feel it radiating even through the foam soles.
You could hear Jungkookâs door slam behind you as well as he also hopped out of the car shouting, âReally, Y/N??â âLeave me alone, Kook!â you yelled back.
âAnd just what exactly do you hope to accomplish by having a fit and wandering off out in this heat? Where can you even go? You donât even know where you are. Just come back and sit by the car until the tow truck comes.â
You knew it was stupid, but your pride wouldn't allow you to turn around even when it was clear that out of the two of you his logic was the soundest at the moment.
You couldnât trust yourself now. Not in the proximity you had just shared with him, not with all the confusing thoughts and scenes playing out in your head at rapid fire speed. You never in all your years have had this kind of reaction to a man without him freaking touching you, and the fact that it was Jungkook tormented you immensely--why out of all the people in the world did it have to be him that got you so worked up??
So, you did what any reasonable person would do in your position.
You kept walking.
That is...until the front of your flip flop caught the side of a decent sized rock, causing you to stumble and before you knew it you met the ground face first with a thud.
Stunned from the direct impact, you just laid there, your entire body throbbing as you tried to process what had just happened. You had fallen so quickly, your hands had barely shot out to break your fall, so you were in a considerable amount of pain.
But the pain was nothing compared to the embarrassment of Jungkook watching you absolutely eat the ground.
Speaking of the devil himselfâŠ
âHoly shit! Y/N!â You could hear him yell out behind you and you winced as you heard heavy footsteps rapidly approaching your form that was still sprawled out pathetically on the ground.
You debated pretending to be unconscious, but the hot ground was burning your skin, and you knew you were going to have to get up eventually. With a sigh, you mentally prepared yourself to start what was sure to be a slow and humiliating process of scraping yourself from off the ground. But before you could will your strength sapped arm muscles into motion, you felt a strong pair of hands grabbing you under your arms before swiftly, yet gently turning you over and pulling you up into a seated position.
âShit,â Jungkook ground out as he rapidly scanned you for visible injuries. âAre you ok?â
You could barely manage a nod as you felt your entire body being engulfed in flames, and it wasnât entirely because of the epic fall you just had. He was leaning over you but even more that--he was freaking touching you, your face, down your arms, and all over your legs as he continued to assess the damage, and you wanted to scream. After he was satisfied that you appeared to be in one piece minus a few cuts and scratches, he met your eyes again, his eyes flashing angrily.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you, Y/N?! And you say that I do dumb shit, but meanwhile here you are, giving a prime example what a âdumbass decisionâ looks like in living color.â He scolded you as he continued to burn you alive with the heated glare he gave you.
Just then you began unfolding your legs from underneath you as you prepared to stand back up, only to wince unconsciously from the pain, letting out a slight hiss as you shifted.
Jungkook's eyes visibly softened at the noise and followed your hand down to where you now grasped your visibly swollen ankle, which was throbbing and growing larger by the minute.
âJesus, Y/NâŠâ he sighed as he shook his head. âThis looks pretty bad.â You batted away his hand that had grasped your ankle, the small circles he had started rubbing on the sensitive bruised skin had your senses reeling and you needed to regroup mentally.
Shifting your weight all on your one good leg, you grunted as you attempted to pull yourself up. Jungkook quickly stood up to assist you, pulling you up the rest of the way by your arm.
You tried to shake him off, determined to walk on your own. Your ankle was swollen, yes, but you werenât an invalid.
You could walk.
But of course, you literally took one step before your knees then buckled like a house of cards. And you would have collapsed to the ground again if werenât for Jungkook quickly grabbing you around the waist and pulling you back up.
âYou are not putting any weight on that foot until we put some ice on it and wrap it up, got it?â Jungkook ordered and you were so embarrassed by this point that all you could do was nod again.
He bit the inside of cheek as he briefly contemplated something.
You heard him mutter f*** it and before you could protest you felt yourself fall back horizontally as your legs were swept from underneath you as Jungkook hoisted you up in arms.
âW-what are you doing??â You sputtered; your arms instinctively latched around his neck when he tossed your body in the air slightly as he re-adjusted his grip on you. âPut me down!â
âNope, it was either this or me dragging your ass across the ground, and Iâm not trying to be walking around in this heat any longer than I have to be.â
You bit your lip as you fought back a whimper that threatened to escape as you felt his grip tighten even more on your body. You were so acutely aware of every place your body was touching his, your nostrils filling up his unique scent, and you hated yourself for secretly relishing every second of such close proximity to him. You glanced up briefly at him only to be bowled over by instant regret as you now watched several drops of sweat sensually slide down that jawline of his, utterly transfixed by how they clung desperately to his glistening skin before falling off and landing on your shaking hand, one by one.
The sensation of which left you feeling heady as a cold chill raced up your back, but at the same time you were dangerously overheated.
You were completely cooked.
Despite him carrying you in the immense heat, he managed to have you both by the car in a matter of seconds. You loosened your grip on his neck in anticipation of him putting you down, but instead in a swift motion that had you breathless he maneuvered you with one arm to shift you over his shoulder so he could open the door without dropping you.
Your brain slowed to an absolute crawl. He just tossed you around like a ragdoll, holding you up by your ass so he could open the doorâand it was honestly one of the hottest things you had ever experienced.
But speaking of him holding your assâŠ
âKook, you plan on putting me down?â You nearly croaked, blood rushing to your head thanks to gravity and your proximity to his own muscular, well-definedâ
âMm.â he responded but his hand remained locked in place right where your thigh and ass met.
Inwardly you groaned.
âKOOK. Down. NOW!â You managed to find your voice and lose it just as quick as he slowly slid you down the length of his torso, his demonic hand grazing over the entire swell of your ass, before making a new home in the small of your back. Even when your good foot contacted earth once more, his grip on you remained.
You jerked back, but it was futileâ he had you locked in.
You fought so hard not to look up, but you could feel your strength all but give out. With the remnants of your shattered pride on the line, you braved a lookâcompletely ignoring the voice in your head that considered how perfectly his height complimented yours.
For what seem to be the umpteenth time that afternoon your heart stuttered as his eyes fixed on yours, silently daring you to look away.
âWhat are you doing?â You hissed, as you made one more attempt to break free of his ironclad grip. The tiniest of smirks appeared as his eyes scanned your face.
âLooking. At you.â
You sucked in a quick breath.
âKook, why are you doing this to me?â You hated how whiny you sounded.
âWhy not?â His eyes narrowed with a wicked gleam. âThe better question is why are you fighting it?â
That was a damn good question.
Why?
Why were you fighting?
The list of reasons in your mind were rapidly dwindling every second he continued to hold you out in the middle of nowhere.
Just as you were about to completely lose your mind and respond to his asinine question, you heard tires meeting gravel in the distance, growing louder by the second.
Jungkook loosened his hold as he turned around to glimpse at the source of the sound, and you instantly pushed off, grasping the open car door for support.
âThank you, God!â If your ankle hadnât been busted, you wouldâve broken out into dance as you spotted a tow truck quickly approaching. You began to wave erratically to flag them down, despite knowing that more than likely they were already coming to you.
âWow. That was fast.â Jungkook whistled as he walked around the front to retrieve the keys from the ignition and started gathering a few of your belongings.
Sure enough, it was the tow truck that you ordered, and it looked like it would be at least self a 30-minute drive into the nearest town with a mechanic.
In no time at all, the tow truck driver hooked up Jungkook âs car and you ambled over to the passenger side. However, Jungkook all but shoved you aside before stepping up into the truck and then yanking you up after him. You were about to tear into him but within seconds, you quickly realized why.
There was not enough room for the two of you.
Seeing this, your only warning from Jungkook was a quickly muttered âSorryâ before you found yourself seated on his lap.
âSorry kids I know itâs tight, but I promise, weâll be there in no timeâ you faintly hear the voice of the driver but all you could process was that you were sitting on Jungkookâs LAP. With nowhere else to go.
His traitorous hand held firmly to your stomach, burning through your shirt. You could feel his hot breath ghosting against the shell of your ear.
âYou good?â He whispered and it was all you could do not to squirm. You nodded not trusting yourself to speak lest you give away how undone you were becoming by the feel of him underneath you.
âGood. Now relax, I got you.â You couldnât help the slight noise that came out as he all but breathed the words against your neck, and you wanted to die when you felt his chest rumble against your back as he tried to hold back a laugh.
âWhat was that Y/N?â You could hear the smirk in his voice. âDidnât quite catch thatâ
You found your voice.
âFuck you, Kookâ you hissed.
âIf thatâs what you want.â He nosed your ear, and your slight intake of breath did not go unmissed. âBut you gotta use your words.â
No. No no no no no. This wasnât happening. It couldnât be.
His grip on your stomach loosened only for him to slip two treacherous fingers under the bottom hem of your tank top, you wanted to scream at the contact. But you didnât attempt to move his hand away. He took this as invitation to bring you even closer, shifting you so you were fully seated on his lap. Your faced bloomed as you knew that he would feel just how much his proximity was affecting you.
âJesus Christ Y/NâŠyouâre about to burn a hole in my leg.â He hissed and you could feel your soul starting to drift from your body. âI got you this hot already? We havenât even done anythingâŠyetâ
This time despite your best efforts, you couldnât have stopped the whimper that slipped out, and when he let out a slight hiss in response all the hairs on your neck stood up.
âYou canât be making noises like that in here noonaâ he breathed into your ear. âBehave yourself, we have company.â At this you pulled away as much as you could, twisting around to look him in the eye.
You donât know what it was that possessed you to speak the words that would follow, but if anyone were to ask, youâd probably blame it on a mild case of heat stroke.
âMake me.â You called his bluff, and if the gleam in his eye was any indication that was probably the worst thing you could have done. His nostrils flaring was the only warning you had before he abruptly shifted you sideways, with your back now facing the driver and your legs draped over his, wedged between his right leg and the door. With one final adjustment he pulled you further up on his lap and Holy SHIT he was â
âIâve about had it with that smart mouth of yours Y/Nâ he all but growled, low enough for your ears only as the radio drowned out his words to the tow truck driver. âBut thatâs ok, you wonât be able to say anything but my name by the time we get this car unhitched and thatâs a fucking promise.â He punctuated his words with a slight pulse of his hips, and right then and there you knew that you were no match for him.
He had you right where he wanted.
And if you planned on making it out alive, you probably would have to acquiesce to whatever those wicked eyes had in store for you.
At this point you were so unbearably keyed up and you didnât even realize how tight you were squeezing your legs together until Jungkook palmed your left thigh, sliding his hand down under your left knee and adjusting you so your legs now crossed.
And so did your eyes.
He really was trying to kill you. You glanced up, and there was no mistaking where Jungkookâs intentions lied. He looked ravenous, and with a bite of his lip, absolutely determined to destroy you.
âY/N, I havenât even touched you and look at youâŠâbout to ruin your favorite shortsâ His left hand smoothed over your left arm, in what was sure to appear as a comforting gesture if the driver were to glance your way. However, his right hand, hidden by the shield of your body, was poised to strike. âWhat should I do, hmm? Should I help you out?â
Your eyes darted up, slowly widening as recognition entered them. You opened your mouth to speak, but all you could do was silently gasp when in a quick maneuver, he unzipped the fly of your jean shorts just enough to slip in two fingers. And then he wrapped them around the still fastened waist bandâand tugged.
You donât know how the hell he did it, but the combination of your tightly pressed legs, the feel of him underneath you and him tugging the seam of your jeans against, well your seam, had you hurtling towards Nirvana. You found yourself biting down where his neck met his shoulder in order not to completely embarrass yourself.
Holy shit.
Holy SHIT.
As you came back down to Earth, you could feel your whole-body sag as all your energy evaporated, and you vaguely felt Jungkookâs lips ghost across your forehead before finding your ear once more.
âThat was fucking beautiful. Good girlâI knew you could do it.â You didnât have it in you to respond, your mind still buzzing and your vision slowly coming back into focus. And as the haze cleared, the panic descended.
What the hell just happened?
How did he manage to slip past your defenses?
How in the world were you going to face Jay?
And just where did he learn that stunt he just pulled? Your legs were still shaking, and you knew there was no way things could ever go back to the way they were.
Not after that.
Not a single one of your exes had ever manage to work you over like that.
And this kid managed to do it barely even touching youâyou could feel yourself shudder at the thought of what it would be like if he actuallyâ
âI literally can see the steam coming out of your ears.â Jungkookâs voice cut through your thoughts and you felt your face bloom all over again. âStop overthinking and just relax.â
You let out a slight huff, and made several attempts to vocalize some of your thoughts, but to no avail. Jungkook, watching you struggle couldnât help but chuckle.
âDonât worry Y/N, Iâve gotten pretty good at cleaning up my messes. And Iâm sure you wonât mind me helping with yours.â His breath tickled your ear. âAfter all, I am the reason weâre in this mess to begin with.â
Holy understatement of the year.
You finally find your voice, albeit shaky.
âKookâŠI donât even âŠI, whatâŠyou justâŠI-Iâm justâ
ââStill buffering clearly. Itâs ok pretty girl, take your time.â
Was this a joke to him? You reached up to grab his chin, ignoring the current that raced down your arm and chilled your spine when you made eye contact.
He regarded you openly and to your chagrin did not back down from what you thought was a glare.
âYou already know that we will be discussingâŠthis. As soon as we handle whatever we gotta handle.â
His sigh escapes with a slight whistle before he lets out a chuckle. âPreparing my counter-argument as we speak. â
âIâm serious Kook. Stop making everything into a joke.â
At this he narrows his eyes, ever so slightly, and you hate how it makes you squirm inside.
âMm, maybe stop assuming that everything I say is a joke? But sure. We can discuss. Verbally.â
âHow the hell else⊠you know what never mind.â
This time a fuller laugh escaped him as his gaze shifted to somethingâŠsofter.
But yet felt more dangerous than anything else youâd seen from him today.
â Itâs really time to stop thinking. Now relax, Iâve got you.â
As the tow truck continued down the seemingly endless stretch of highway, you knew that there was no way you would be able to stop thinking.
Because if you stopped thinking, you would start feeling. And then there would be no way to recoup what was sure to be a loss.
Deep down, really deep, a small part of you knew it could feel like this. Being cradled on Jungkook's lap, with his chin propped on the top of your forehead, now humming a melody of a song so sweet it gave you whiplash knowing it was coming from the same wicked mouth that tortured you earlier--you felt something in you finally surrender to...him.
And thatâs what you were afraid of.
More than anything.

if both teams in the final failed to beat you in 90min you should be crowned the honorary world cup champion. congratulations cabo verde đ„ł
they should just crown bts the winner and call it a day
Jokes aside I just have to say this in light of all this Grammy discourse this really reaffirms that BTS been about that life, they are not just some kpoppies who bopped a little too hard and made it to mainstream media cause they rubbed a few elbows. They have been DISRUPTERS in EVERY market theyâve ever stepped foot in and the only reason this news to anyone is cause they didnât know who TF they were.
TL;DR Grammys really thought they could toss BTS a bone and they would go fetch. They instead leaned who was really the bitch. And itâs not Bangtan SoYallDone.

hey yall âĄ
i'm back after almost 7 years?? am i even doing this right lol
inspired an old Tumblr prompt âDonât look at me, this is not my faultâ. and then it just took off from there. It was only supposed to be 1000 words, lol nope. Itâs now a two shot.
this story has been living rent-free in my brain for a very long time, and i'm so excited to finally share it with you. Its also posted on AO3 here
expect lots of bickering, unresolved feelings, and enough sexual tension to make everyone involved question their life choices.
enjoy! âĄ

Stranded
âDonât look at me, this is not my fault.â
âThis is not YOUR fault??â You grit out as you suddenly jerk around in your seat to face your traveling partner, fixing him with an icy glare that somehow managed to run his blood cold, but also had him drawing the corner of his lip between his teeth as he studied your shaking form.
<CLICK>
<CLICK>
<CLICK--
â--Jungkook if you click that signal one more time I swear by everything holy I will make you a mouth breather for the rest of your life!â You finally screeched, and his eyes widened, stunned at the sheer force you suddenly revealed as you reached out to grab a fistful of his prized obsidian hair, yanking the taller boy down so his ear could be mere inches from your mouth.
