HELLO????
I have many thoughts and not so many spoons to express them so i shall focus on the most based part of this post: Apo.
So! Yoshi YoshiInTheWeb yaps about History, vApo, vPyro and the general ideal. And keep it in mind that this is all of the top of my head so the details might be a bit shady if there is some inaccuracies feel free to correct me!
FIRST OF ALL, Modern Day Ukraine came to be in the 1990s after the USSR and the concept of a country under that specific name is relatively new HOWEVER the name itself has a long history when used for PEOPLE, and Ukrainians as PEOPLE used to have their own country BEFORE it was called Ukraine - what is Historically known as Rus (not Russia its something totally different). Firstly there was Kievan Rus (c. 880–1240) later the country changed it's names but it was generally it was know as some kind of Rus. This terminology is generally know in the region and lives on in some aspects when it comes to naming things (The most prominent example that i can think of rn of would be Pierogi Ruskie, which is a type of pierogi that the name comes from that region of Europe, even if they dont have much to do with Ukrainian version of the dish and as far as im aware over there they are know as polish?)
The region would eventually fall under the Lithuanian Rule and with that would eventually be part of what would be ultimately known as Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (which fun fact originally there was a plan to make it a tri state but in the end that didnt end up happening). Generally speaking it wasn't good either and the general people of the region weren't really happy with the arrangement but most of the people who were unhappy with this were peasants therefore they had little power to change things as most nobles assimilated with the Polish and left behind their roots which is know as polonisation of Ukraine, this however doesn't meant that there wasn't any effort for Independence as there was at least one uprising/war in the region. That one got really messy and Russia got involved in it too and honestly i wound need to make a specific post about this to do it justice, if you want to read up on it go look for the Khmelnytsky Uprising. I'm not gonna touch it here beyond saying that it a) shake the whole Ukraine-Poland-Russia scene b) lead to a lot of fucked up shit done by both sides of the conflict c) in the long run all the progress made was eaten by Russian Empire d) this and some other things left the Commonwealth weakened which lead t-
The partitions of Commonwealth (generally know as partitions of Poland) in 1772,-1795! This is when all of the lands of the country (which still included some parts of Ukraine) ended up between Russian, Prussian (later German) or Austrian empires. Ukraine ended up mostly under Russia (with a little bit of it in Austria). By then the Ukrainian people were pushing for independence a lot and there was big spike in nation based uproars, which was the general trend across the whole Europe at the time, cuz turns out people dont really like living under imperial states that don't let them use their own languages and cover 1/3 of the continent. This would be still the case in the 1880s. Where the Ukrainian people faced even more restrictions on their culture by the Russians put in place as a result of January Uprising that i mentioned in my own Post.
With this we are up to speed on most of the relevant information about the history of the region up until the 1880s. I will add that past that point similar situation would be held still. Ukrainian people would want to push for Independence which would be unsuccessful under the rule of Russia, Poland or both (depending on the time) which would be followed by more restrictions and oppression. Which would eventually lead to the fall of USSR after which Ukraine would finally be their own country.

1. Would they bond over this?
Debatable! First of all: Poland has their own sizable part of Ukrainian occupation itself, (looking from the perspective of 1880s both in the past and in the future). Second of all their situations are very much different.
vApo, as far as im aware, is not part of any nobility. As far as we know she lived in a village and was its only architect, which lead her to be drafted into the army. That's quite fucked up on its own, but with the added idea of it being an army that actively occupies and torment her people is even more fucked up and would lead her to be very much AGAINST them.
vPyro is from a noble family. On top of that, if we go with the full set of headcanons [including the things that Nick has added to my original post, that i generally agree with (we talked about it on Discord lmao)] than his specifically from a family that assimilated with the german population which would make them a bit of an outcasts withing the polish people of the area who didn't. That is a big issue, as family and community is the main source of cultivating ones culture in a situation like this, so Pyro might know shit and depending on the timeline, maybe not even know that they are polish or very little. Assimilation in this case means becoming German in everything but blood. If he does know anything about it, he would need to learn this himself, which would be difficult looking at the reputation of their family.
This sets them on the opposite sides of this spectrum.
2. Would they understand each other?
Slavic languages are often said to be generally mutual intelligibility but in reality it really depends. First of all the two we are talking about are from different groups: Ukrainian is east Slavic while Polish is west Slavic. So the degree of mutual intelligibility is low than between two languages from the same group. Second of all it also depends of their familiarity with the other language which Apo may or may not have depending on the region of Ukraine she would be from, while Pyro wouldn't probably hear it much, since for that he would need to be from a region that at the time would be under Russian occupation.
Again assuming that vPyro would know polish (which realistically speaking is not very much likely).
But you know what BOTH of them have the possibility to know/understand? THE SONG FROM THE POST! That's Hey Sokoły/Гей, соколи which was first written in Polish and than translated into Ukrainian and has lyrics in both languages which are very much recognizable across both.
