Tarot 101: Methods of Reading Court Cards
(GIF by @horrorandhalloween)
Last time, I introduced the court cards with all of their quirks and complexities, but I didn’t really talk about how to read them. Below are a few methods for using the court cards in readings from the obvious to the more adaptable.
Court Cards as People
(GIF by @nawtacop)
One of the most clear-cut ways to read court cards is to understand them as representations of people based on their archetypal traits. (I should note that though some of those traits are heavily gender-biased, you don’t need to include gender to read court cards as people, but more on that later.) It can also be useful to consider the cards’ motivations when you choose to read them this way. For instance, if you pull a page, is it indicating a youthful person that you are interacting with or is it asking you to look at your own progress toward a kind of message, knowledge, or adventure?
When you read them this way, it is important to remember that a court card may represent you as well. A lot of this depends on context (what question did you ask for your reading?) and the cards that might surround the court card in a reading, too.
Court Cards as Timeline
If you haven’t already noticed this from the story of the Major Arcana, tarot cards share connections with one another. One of those connections is within the small family of court cards which can be seen as a kind of cycle on their own. This cycle is not nearly as expansive as the Fool’s Journey, but when read as timeline, the court cards can provide you with a different kind of perspective.
Here’s the timeline:
Page —> Knight —> Queen —> King
Youngest—————————-Oldest
While I have defined the timeline above in terms of age, there are other ways to use these four cards to understand progress (experience is one I am particularly fond of). To understand this, as I have pointed out previously, it is useful to notice the parallels here between the court cards and the Major Arcana.
Pages act (on a smaller scale) in the role of The Fool but with more advantages. If we meet The Fool as a kind of baby, we meet the pages as tweens. They are eager, but not completely blind. There energy comes from possibility rather than the blank slate that drives The Fool.
Queens and Kings operate similarly to The Empress and The Emperor in that they can be guides and they have a specific level of maturity that allows them to make solid decisions in different ways. (I do not rank the king above the queen. Instead the queen and king are at a similar level of maturity but approach things differently, the queens with diplomacy and the kings with snappy decisiveness.)
Knights might be tied to both Strength and The Chariot for various reasons, but I tend to let knights stand alone in the court card cycle as the adventurous in-between of the excited pages and the more collected queen and king.
The most important thing to note when reading these cards as timeline is that you can’t understand one without the others. (This is similar to considering the upright when pulling a reverse card.) When you pull a knight, how might that knight’s rash go-getter attitude be an indicator that you need more of a queen’s perspective? How can the page push you to grow? (Growth is not an indicator of value either!)
Court Cards and Gender
(GIF by @animatedtext)
It always comes back to gender, doesn’t it? I’ll spare you a rant about gendered correspondences and instead say this: Though “court cards” are tied to images of people, we don’t need gender stereotypes to understand them.
For instance, I resist the idea of the queen and king as parental figures. For one, we already have enough of this with The Emperor and The Empress (who are doing a fine job and also don’t need to be gendered, by the way), and beyond that, the idea of the queen as a mother or the king as a father diminishes their presence in the deck. The queen is a diplomat. That is a card that takes a decision and considers it in a philosophical way. The queen’s experience has taught them that consideration and success go together. The king has learned that authority lends them the space to make decisions unquestioned (for better or for worse). Gender is not tied to this. Active/passive (which I also find to be pretty gendered) is not really tied to this either. Those binaries are too reductive and prevent the court cards from acting as complex indicators in a reading.
Focus on the energy of these cards and what they have to tell you, not hypothetical and often-forced gender roles.
Ok—maybe that was still a bit of a rant, but you get the point.
All of these work in tandem with the general understandings of each cards and their suits, of course. You can use these methods individually and set out to read in a specific way based on context of your reading. But you might also consider combining these methods and considering everything! (For instance: How does a court card’s space in a particular cycle impact your understanding of it as a representative person?) Court cards are complex. Always consider the possibilities.

Dream Interpretation: Weather
What is Dream Interpretation?
It is assigning meaning to dreams, meaning using what one dreams of and the symbols, objects and events of the dream to relate them to the psychological, emotional and sometimes spiritual state of the dreamer. Some use it as a way to divine and predict the future while others use it to help assess their emotional states and subconscious thoughts they may be ignoring in waking life.
General Overview and Meaning
While dreaming the weather that occurs represents our emotional states and our state of mind. It often represents the positive and the negative of circumstances we are facing and handling. Sometimes weather will be more obvious in dreams than in other dreams, sometimes we don’t full notice it.
Specific Dream Situations
Overall Good Weather: This varies person to person whether they consider a type of weather as “good” but in general if its weather you deem as nice, it relates to being in good standing and emotional state
Wind: It represents change and travel. You may be feeling the need to change your surroundings or to move to a new place. Gusts of winds and unceasing strong wind relates to struggles in waking life. If wind is pushing the dreamer then in waking life you are feeling controlled by another. Gentle winds indicate you are excited for something new. Wind helping the dreamer fly or move faster indicates you feel like you are well supported by others around you.
Rain: generally relates to negative emotions - sadness, disappointment, depression, etc. It may relate to the need to improve communication because you are feeling unheard or ignored by others. Light rain may relate to feeling calm or indifferent.
Cold Weather: Often represents something in your life that you dislike or even hate. Some relate it to feeling ignored or lonely (getting the “cold shoulder”). Others say it relates to bitterness and being pessimistic (”bitter cold”). Freezing weather means you feel hostility directed at you.
Flooding from Rain/Weather Event: Negativity and uncertainty is “flooding” into your life right now. You are stressed, emotional and may feel like its all too much to deal with. Subconsciously you are in a panic.
Rainbow: seeing a rainbow in the sky or during rainfall relates to harmony and peace in one’s life. You are feeling that you have overcome a “storm” and are starting to feel much better.
Fog: A thick dense fog relates to feelings of feeling isolated, lost and confused. Thin veils of fog relates to the feelings of the supernatural, wonder and trying to find your way. You may also be trying to find a path through a problem or obstacle you have come across.
Warm Weather: It relates to normalcy in waking life - its as it is.
Hot Weather: exhaustion and the feeling of being overworked
Drought: It may literally represent a shortage you are experiencing (income, food, shelter, socialization, etc). It also can relate to distress from work or labor.
Hurricane: An enormous threat is present in your waking life and its very distressful. You may feel like you’ve lost control of your emotions or are having issues coping with grief, fear and/or depression.Linked to feelings of impending failure.
Sunshine: Positive and “sunny” mindset currently. You are feeling confirmed, energetic, happy and overall hopeful.
Snow: Often associated with purification going on in your life like overcoming obstacles and cutting out negative people. May also relate to feeling at peace over something or even yourself. A snowstorm or blizzard means you feel trapped and isolated. May also relate to a recent break up or end of friendship.
Lightning: Unexpected and sudden changes have occurred in your life recently. It may also relate to feeling the need to get something done quickly. You recently night have been “shocked” by an event in waking life. Blue lightning relates to disbelief. Green lightning relates to someone else negatively affecting your life. Red lightning represents sudden negative changes.
Thunder: You are feeling like you are about to explode with anger and violence. Someone may have to recently yelled at you or scared you.
Hail: you feel under pressure and ridiculed possibly you’re emotionally in pain.
Storm: There is turmoil and conflict in your waking life. May also relate to anxiety and worries. A distant storm indicates tensions are building and you’re expecting something bad as a result. Trying to shelter from a storm means you feel abandoned in a time you need help and support.
Divination
Weather has quite a varying amount of meanings when it comes to dream divination. It does change based on how experienced a person is with divination though, generally dreaming of a certain weather event may relate to said weather event happening. There are other meanings of course rather than obvious weather, some basics are listed below:
Storm/Rain: something negative is about to come, feelings of despair will soon hit
Snow: relates to many things though it can be as simple as a snow storm on its way to the need to work on a relationship before it “freezes over”
Drought: you are about to lose something or a resource
Hurricane: a threat or danger is on its way
Flooding: you are about to be overwhelmed or financially crippled by a sudden event
Windstorm: An argument with someone close to you is about to happen
Rainbow: good news, happiness and possible exciting news is on its way

It can be heated naturally (like near a volcano) but amethyst + heat = citrine, so half or partial application of heat and you get a fun half and half!

Add Some Oomph to Your Spells with Magical Timing
Like herbs, oils, and crystals, you don’t need to work with magical timing for your spell to be successful. You can cast a spell at any time, no matter your intention, and get your desired results. However, working with the energy of the sun, moon, and days of the week can add an extra power boost to your magic.
Think of it this way: certain energies are dominant at certain times. Those energies are easier to connect with because they are closer at hand, so to speak, so you can bring them into your life and your spells more easily and in a more powerful way. That doesn’t mean you can’t call on other energies during these times — it just means that you may not connect to them quite so easily.
If you choose to work with magical timing in your spells, there are several yearly, monthly, weekly, and even daily cycles you can align your spells with.
The Cycle of the Sun: Solstices and Equinoxes
These are the turning points that mark the solar year, and are associated with the relationships between day and night, light and dark, summer and winter. Each solstice or equinox marks the end of one season and the beginning for the next. Because they are so rare and so potent, these days are a great time for your “big picture” spells or for spells that need a big power boost.
Winter Solstice. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, and falls between December 20 and December 23, depending on the year. In some pagan traditions the winter solstice, or Yule, marks the beginning of the new year — you may choose to set intentions for the coming year on this solstice. After the winter solstice, the nights start getting shorter and the days start getting longer — so spells related to healing and bringing things into the light are especially effective at this time of year. The winter solstice marks the end of the “dark half” of the year and beginning of the “light half” of the year; at this point, our focus turns from inward reflection to outward manifestation. You may choose to think of the time between the winter solstice and spring equinox as a “planning phase,” where you examine yourself and your desires, decide what you want to work on in the next year, and make plans for manifesting what you want.
Spring Equinox. An equinox occurs when the day and the night are exactly the same length, representing a perfect balance between light and dark. The spring equinox marks the beginning of spring and occurs between March 19 and March 22. The Christian holiday of Easter and the pagan holiday of Ostara are both related to the energy of this equinox. At this time of year, the natural world is coming back to life as winter begins to fade. Plants are beginning to grow, and baby animals are being born. This is a powerful time of year for fertility magic and any magic related to new beginnings. You may choose to think of the time between the spring equinox and the summer solstice as a “planting phase,” where you “plant the seed” of the things you want to manifest and begin doing the work to make it happen.
Summer Solstice. This solstice marks the longest day and shortest night of the year. It occurs between June 19 and June 23. As I am writing this post, we are coming up on the summer solstice (June 20, 2020). Life, fertility, and growth are at their peak during this time of year, which makes this solstice a perfect time for big manifestation spells. At the same time, this marks the end of the “light half” and beginning of the “dark half” of the year, so after the summer solstice our energy shifts from outward manifestation to inward contemplation. You may choose to think of the time between the summer solstice and fall equinox as the “harvest phase,” where you reap the results of your hard work and manifest your desires in the physical world.
Autumn Equinox. This is the other time of year when the day and night are perfectly balanced. The autumn equinox occurs between September 19 and September 23 and marks the beginning of autumn. This is traditionally the time of year when crops are harvested, and many pagan groups celebrate harvest festivals around this time. Nature is beginning to die or go into hibernation in preparation for the coming winter. This is an especially powerful time of year for shadow work or for magic related to endings and transitions. You may choose to think of the time between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice as the “reflection phase,” when you retreat from the outside world to rest, focus on yourself, and do your inner work and self-healing.
Important Note: This post lists dates for the solstices and equinoxes in the Northern hemisphere. In the Southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed. If you live in the Southern hemisphere, you would observe the winter solstice in June, the spring equinox in September, the summer solstice in December, and the fall equinox in March.
The Cycle of the Moon: Lunar Phases
If you don’t have time to wait for the appropriate solstice or equinox, you can still connect with the cosmos in your magic. One of the biggest pros of the lunar cycle is that it happens roughly every month — so you never have to wait very long for the next full moon. The moon is also associated with magic and spirituality in several traditions, which makes it an especially powerful astral ally for witches.
New Moon. The new moon is when the moon is completely invisible in the night sky, and is the phase opposite the full moon. The new moon is a powerful time for shadow work (because it deals with things that are hidden) and for magic related to new beginnings.
Waxing Moon. The moon is waxing when it appears to be growing in the night sky; this is the phase between the new moon and full moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with drawing something in, building something up, or strengthening something that already exists.
Full Moon. Many witches believe that the full moon is the most powerful time of month for any kind of magic. This is a good time to cast any spell that needs a serious power boost. The full moon is also an especially powerful time to release what no longer serves you or to work healing magic.
Waning Moon. The moon is waning when it appears to be shrinking in the night sky; this is the phase between the full moon and new moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with sending something away, banishing negative energy, or bringing something to an end.
Dark Moon. The dark moon is the three day period immediately before the new moon. In some traditions, it is believed to be bad luck to cast spells during the dark moon. Other traditions hold that the dark moon is the best point in the lunar cycle for destructive magic, such as curses and hexes. Many modern witches don’t recognize the dark moon as a separate moon phase at all. I personally like to use the dark moon as a time for self reflection, and may focus on shadow work during this time.
Magical Correspondences for the Days of the Week
The days of the week also have their own unique magical energies, and each day is linked to a certain planet and to certain deities.
Sunday. Sunday is, of course, connected to the Sun and solar deities. Sunday is the best day of the week for any manifestation magic that needs an extra boost. Its energy is also associated with healing, personal growth, power, and success.
Monday. Monday is associated with the Moon and lunar deities. Monday is a quiet, introspective day, and can feel very ethereal. It’s the best day for magic related to intuition, nurturing, and shadow work.
Tuesday. Tuesday is associated with Mars and with gods and goddesses of war and action. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Tyr/Tiw.) Tuesday is a very “active” day, and is good for magic related to action, activism, victory, or finding courage.
Wednesday. Wednesday is associated with Mercury and with gods and goddesses of wisdom, learning, and communication. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Odin/Wodan.) Wednesday is all about mental activity. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to thought, travel, communication (written, spoken, or digital), and learning/study.
Thursday. Thursday is associated with Jupiter and with gods and goddesses of prosperity, wealth, and protection. (It is named after the Norse/Germanic god Thor.) Thursday, like Jupiter in astrology, is all about outward expansion. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to career, prosperity, and wealth.
Friday. Friday is associated with Venus and with gods and goddesses of love, fertility, and sensuality. (It is named after the Norse goddess Freyja, or perhaps the goddess Frigg.) The energy of Friday is fun, lighthearted, and sexy. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to love, beauty, and sex/sexuality.
Saturday. Saturday is associated with Saturn and with time and wisdom. (The day and the planet are both named after the Roman god Saturn.) Saturday is practical and wise, but it does have a little bit of a dark side. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to banishing and protection.
Magical Times of Day
Okay, so you’d like to start working with magical timing, but what about emergency magic and last-minute spells? What if you don’t have time to wait for the next full moon, or even the next Sunday? You can still align your spell with magical timing! There are several moments of power each day, and each has its own magical associations.
Sunrise. Sunrise is, of course, the birth of the new day. This makes it the perfect time for spells related to new beginnings or expanded possibilities.
Noon. This is the peak or high point of the day. This is a powerful time for healing magic.
Sunset. Sunset is the end of the day, and forms a gateway between light and dark. This is a great time for spells related to accepting endings, releasing that which does not serve, and moving on from the past.
Midnight. If noon is the peak of the day, then midnight is the peak of the night. Midnight has a very ethereal, transformational energy. Like with the full moon, some witches believe that any spell will be more powerful if cast at midnight. This is a powerful time for both banishing and attraction magic.
