Gay and Bisexual men are 7 times more likely to binge and 12 times more likely to purge than heterosexual men. Overall gay and bisexual men are at high risk of developing an eating disorder.
But why? Without writing an entire chapter novel on this subject, I'll keep it brief. Within an already marginalized community, there is an order based on your body type. Mainstream gay media intensifies this by hyper-sexualizing the ideal male physique. In mobile apps created to connect the community they allow for profile options where you choose what "body type" you are. So literally, you can go from a "muscle jock" to a "bear" if you stop going to the gym for awhile. Many LGBT social gatherings, clubs, bars, and public events are segmented based on these categories which again are completely based on your physical appearance.
In some situations, individuals will not even speak to you or interact with you if you don't meet the "body type" that they see as attractive. I'm talking a full cold shoulder turn or side eye of wondering why you are speaking. In both social and professional settings. Though if you lose a noticeable amount of weight they will then reply to a simple greeting.
But let's say you're an 18/19-year-old gay man that is struggling to find acceptance in school and at home. You turn to our own community but yet you are ostracized based on your body. Your entire life you've been rejected and you know the only way you'll find acceptance is being in "ideal physique" so you purge your lunches and avoid eating. You then rapidly lose those 50 lbs that were keeping you from being accepted. But now you deal with malnutrition, dental issues, and other medical challenges that stem from an eating disorder. But at least you're now accepted, right?
If you've made it this far, you're a rockstar. I share this information because it is important to know that your gay best friend might be struggling. So after you ask them for advice on what to wear, ask how they're doing. And with anyone suffering from an eating disorder, help them get the help they need to feel comfortable in a healthy & happy body.
