Life Update

Still Alive!

It’s been awhile, huh? Been busy and slightly overwhelmed with work... Until about two weeks ago. I had an accident at a jump-park. I swear, it only took four minutes for me to royally fuck myself up. I over-jumped and landed on a solid platform instead of the trampoline part. My ankle went one way and my foot went another. I knew instantly that I fucked up. To make a long story short, I dislocated my joint, which was easy enough to fit back in ER and fractured my talus bone... which was less simple.

I am 30 and have never broken a single bone before. I certainly made up for it. This is one bone that you really don’t want to break. I mean, in the unlikely situation where you are given a choice about which bone to break, don’t choose the Talus.(Very short Bone Lesson)The talus, sits below the tibia and fibula and right above the heel bone. It’s surrounded by a thick layer of  cartilage because this bone functions as a support (distributing weight equally around the ankle) and an important component to the ankle’s wide range of motion. I just recently found out about how important this small bone is. (End  Lesson)

ER didn’t want anything to do with that mess so they put me in a splint and referred me to a specialist. And fuck did that shit hurt (reminder to but language warnings in tags). Could not put it in any position for 2 minutes without crying in frustration. The worst part was, elevating the ankle hurt the most. Doing the one thing that the doctor told me that I needed to do to keep the swelling down and to help regulate pain felt excruciating at best. I received some relief when I went to see the specialist. He took the splint off and found that I was extremely swollen. They had wrapped it too tight and used the scratchy wrap underneath the splint without any cushion. I had also developed fracture blisters from the swollen skin pressed against my injury (for the love of all things good never look up images for fracture blisters). No wonder I was in so much pain.

I needed surgery. I could not wait, but I needed to weight because of the swelling. Talus fractures, if not healed correctly can cause many complications. Some severe consequences could cause me losing the bone all together. The longer I waited for surgery, the more likely the bone won’t heal correctly. Thankfully, it was now easier to take care of my ankle. With most ankle injuries, from sprains to fractures, you are prescribed RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation).

A week later, and nearly two weeks after my injury, I was finally ready for surgery. Of course, I was briefed before the surgery. I understood the procedure (somewhat?), and gone through each pre-op step. I was never ready for the operation, but I was already ready for it to be over. I told myself, as the anesthetist prepared the nerve block for my leg that I would be in the post op bed in two hours. Two hours later was only one nap away. I woke up five hours later.

Ok. The operation took longer than expected. I heard it from my mother, who talked with the doctor, who explained that he did not realize that my fracture was that severe until he saw it with his own eyes. X-rays did not due my ankle justice apparently.

Surgery was two days ago. Post-op pain was harsh after the nerve block wore out. Since then, I have been mostly asleep. I’m only just starting to feel a little more awake and like myself, so I wanted to take the opportunity and summarize all I’ve been through. Looking back, I realized that it really was a lot of crap all piled on at once. Here’s hoping recovery goes a lot more smoothly.

Homophobia and Ableism in SU Fandom’s Reaction to Pearl

After I watched the latest Steven Bomb episodes up until “We Need to Talk,” I was ecstatic. The series seems to keep getting better and better, the characters richer, as toxic tropes were continually subverted. I was especially excited about the obviously canon nature of Pearl’s romantic feelings for Rose Quartz. I found Pearl’s micdrop hilarious and the way she grappled with her sacrifices for Rose touching.

So when I logged onto tumblr and saw the fandom spewing hate toward Pearl, even aiming criticism at those who celebrated her feelings for Rose as queer representation, I was shocked and confused.

Other bloggers have pointed out the incongruity of the harsh criticism of Pearl paired with fandom’s affection toward Peridot and Jasper, villains who have sought the annihilation of humans and have harmed and imprisoned characters against their will. Even after Peridot’s horrific experiments on gems, that force them to fuse, the vitriol has primarily been aimed at Pearl, despite the fact it’s completely unwarranted. So why is fandom so harsh toward Pearl? Why are they going so far as to call her abusive, bitchy, a jerk? In my view, some of this vitriol stems from both ableism and homophobia.

Kurogane's fortitude is amazing. At first I was disappointed that this brute ninja was traveling with Sakura instead of princess Tomoyo. But I was so glad to be wrong as he grew to be much more than first impressions led me to believe.

Sea Bunnies

If you polled people on marine life they thought was cute, sea slugs would probably rate somewhere near the bottom if they made the list at all. That’s a shame, though, as the amusingly named nudibranch group is full of vivid color, out-there shapes, and even downright adorableness.

But maybe the sea slug’s image is about to change because the Japanese Net, purveyors of all things cute, have just discovered Jorunna parva, the fluffy little bunnies of the sea. The Japanese name for Jorunna parva is gomafu biroodo umiushi, which loosely translates to black speckled velvet sea slug.

And if you think those pictures of the Pacific sea slug are cute, check out the little fluff-ball in very slow action, captured on film by a diver off Shizuoka Prefecture.
