So… 👀 I was tagged for these a long time ago and it took me forever to finish (mainly because I didn’t have a clear image for Roanael’s parents and their names). I saved the topic for all three questions in my notes. And recently I’ve finished this but I couldn’t manage to find the post where I was tagged for these 😅
I think it was probably this post by @burnt-by-marigolds but I’m sorry if I’m wrong.
Using this opportunity I also want to say big thanks to everyone who tagged me for all those OC games and questions while I wasn’t very active 💛 I might not get through all of them but it still felt nice to be remembered :3
Also I don’t remember the exact phrasing for the questions, but this should be close enough.
What is your OC’s relationship with their family/guardian?
Roanael has a strong, warm relationship with her family, which includes her wood-elf mother, Naivara, and her late human father, Korin.
Their family dynamic may have been somewhat unconventional, but that is hardly surprising for a household shaped by a strong-willed elf and her free-spirited spouse. From an early age, they treated Roanael not simply as a child to be nurtured and shaped, but as an independent person growing under their care. Rather than strict authority, they offered guidance, shared their experience, and let her explore her own path while quietly watching over her. Of course, there were moments when mischief needed to be corrected, but Roanael was, by nature, a sensible child.
Her mother is deeply grounded – someone who knows what she wants and does not rush toward it, preferring instead to let life unfold at its own pace. She was the stricter parent, the one who ensured that the household remained stable and that responsibilities were not neglected. In contrast, her father was often the source of warmth and chaos with his energetic and joyful presence that could always turn an ordinary day into something memorable.
While Roanael inherited much of her temperament from Naivara, it was her father who influenced her future path the most. He introduced her to his understanding of druidic practices, nurturing her connection to nature. The rest she pursued on her own through study, but in the end, she followed in his footsteps and became a druid herself.
Her mother is also far from predictable. Though wood elves often remain within their forest communities, Naivara chose a different path. It was during his travels that young Korin first stumbled upon her village. He fell for her immediately, while she required far more convincing. Undeterred, he returned year after year, each time with a new attempt to win her over – until, eventually, his persistence, warmth, and unrelenting spirit found a place in her heart. Curious about the wider world, she chose to leave her home after their marriage, and the two spent several years traveling together. When she became pregnant, they decided to settle in Baldur’s Gate, believing that its diversity would help their half-elven child not to feel out of place.
Korin passed away in his early sixties.
[I've used Roanael once in DnD campaign and I might use her in the future, and to deepen her background story I am considering adding a plotline where her father crossed path to Shadow Druids' circle and died of their revenge and her personal quest was to find out the circumstances and finish what he started, but I haven't worked on that yet]
His death seemed to shift the dynamic in their family - they remain close, but their bond has shifted into something less openly expressive, yet still deeply rooted. Her mother, still young by elven standards, has built a life of her own in the city. Naivara works as a garden architect, even receiving commissions from the Upper City, and finds fulfilment in her craft. She has no intention of marrying again. They now live as two independent adults connected by a strong but unobtrusive bond. At least, that is how her mother sees it. Roanael, however, still feels that her elven mother has not entirely adjusted to the idea that her daughter has grown up so fast and is no longer a child.
Have they ever had an official job? What was it?
Before the tadpole adventures, Roanael would describe herself as a wandering druid. Basically, that's exactly what she did.
When she was a kid, she helped out both her parents. As a teen, she would find some places to work on the Gates, like waitering, delivering packages, selling herbs, and other materials she'd find in the forest. When she became an adult, she took to travelling around like her father, though she would still stick close to home. To be honest, it was close to being an adventurer, since she would often take small quests to earn money or out of curiosity.
Whenever she returns to Baldur's Gate, her mom drags her to help her out in her business, like managing plants and other things. Which makes Roanael roll her eyes and groan. She still usually agrees.
How do they feel about killing?
She doesn't like killing and will avoid it if possible. In most cases, Roanael will try to talk them out of fighting, try to reason, trick, or make a deal with the opponent. However, if someone attacks them or threatens their safety, she will fight to kill without much doubt. She believes if someone goes for someone's life, they should be prepared to lose their own. It's just about survival, like in nature – you take a risk, but someone else can always outsmart or outpower you.
At the same time, if she can help someone, she will likely try. And if she fails to do so, she will be restless for a while, thinking about how she could have avoided that.
In my first playthrough we accidentally lost many side characters, and in my headcanon Roanael was feeling down and spending time alone by the fire, sleepless, thinking about letting someone down once again. Astarion started spending time with her in moments like these, and gradually she started to open up more and rely on him for comfort.
