Sometimes I think back on the time I spent working as a barista, and it seems SO STRANGE to me that ācoffee shop AUā has become synonymous with narratives that are low on conflict, high on wholesome romance. During the year I spent working at a coffee shop:
A coworker of mine took a bunch of psychedelics, walked through some strangersā plate-glass door, and threatened them with a bowie knife, leading to his arrest and imprisonment (and, needless to say, a late opening for the coffee shop that morning).Ā
Another coworker, an ex-military type with a young wife and a new baby, decided to smoke up for the first time ever with two other mutual coworkers, in the back of one of their trucks; and ended up having a three-way with them which ended his marriage.Ā
I had a nervous breakdown, stopped being able to eat food or hold conversations, and ended up sleeping on my coworkerās couch for three weeks before she finally called my parents to come collect me.
Multiple store managers were fired for embezzlement. (Reminder: this was within the space of a single year.)
Yet another coworker, who was seventeen at the time, started dog-sitting for a couple of regulars in their (Iām guessing) early 50s, and ended up in an ongoing creepy and incidentally illegal ~relationship~ with them both.Ā
Various employees discovered, in the course of cleaning the bathrooms: couples fucking in the bathrooms; junkies passed out in the bathrooms; drunks puking in the bathrooms; both adults and children weeping in the bathrooms; a woman bleeding all over the bathroom from a gash in her throat (??); a dude standing in the middle of the bathroom floor and pissing in the opposite direction from the toilet, so that when the employee opened the unlocked door she got piss all over her (????).Ā
The owner of the bridal shop across the street was exposed as both abusive toward her employees and also cooking the books, which led to my coffee shop taking on a couple of untrained and weirdly conservative bridal shop workers for a few months while the bridal shop was shuttered and sold to new owners. Later the larcenous former bridal shop owner came down with some horrible disease which caused her to lose both her hands. Ā
There was a regular universally referred to as āSketchy Steve,ā who came in at 7am for a three-shot latte with room for Seagrams 7, and dealt drugs to all us baristas. I actually, at one point (I cannot believe I was this stupid), went inside Sketchy Steveās house, and allowed him to spend like half an hour showing me his collection of dĆ©coupaged outlet plates and also soliciting me for sex while I uncomfortably yet studiously declined.
Right before I started, the store manager had walked off the job in the middle of a shift, and ¾ of the employees had walked out after him. None of them ever returned.Ā
Like, working on the front lines of food service was the most operatically sordid professional experience I have ever had, and one of the most surreal; and it is hilarious to me that THAT, of all jobs, is the one that has come to stand for soft-focus domestic romance in fandom circles.Ā
This is the Coffee Shop AU we deserve.
Iāve been seeing a lot of videos about the line 3 pipeline on my fyp but I havenāt seen that much coverage on other social sites. This tik tok explains whatās happening from one of the people who have been on the front lines in Minnesota. You can also check out the website https://www.stopline3.org/#intro to understand a little more about how serious this is. Here is a carrd from @/Ugrunna on tik tok: https://ugrunna.carrd.co/ . She is another indigenous tik toker who has been fighting to stop the full construction of line 3 which would have a irreversible impacts on our climate and environment if the construction goes through. Line 3 is set to built on top of Native land while also going through the Mississippi River. The oil that is being drilled out of the earth is Tar Sands which is also known as the dirtiest oil on earth. If you or anyone you know is in Minnesota please consider joining people in the frontlines and if you are able to please consider donating to help with bail funds for people at the frontlines who are being arrested.
Decolonize, donate, educate, and get our land back.
Join us to #StopLine3 from desecrating our lakes, wild rice, and Anishinaabeg treaty territories.

I think about once in a while...
We have another one...
Quiet everyone the USA citizens learning there's other languages and countries outside of the USA
One of the most bizarrely cool people Iāve ever met was an oral surgeon who treated me after a ridiculous accident (thatās another story), Dr. Z.
Dr. Z. was, easily, the best and most competent doctor or dentist Iāve ever encountered ā and after that accident, I encountered quite a number. He came stunningly highly recommended, had an excellent record, and the most calming bedside manner Iāve ever seen.
That last wasnāt the sweet gentle caretaking sort of manner, which some nurses have but you wouldnāt expect to see in a surgeon. No; when Dr. Z. told me that one of my broken molars was too badly damaged to save, and I (being seventeen and still moderately in shock) broke down crying, he stared at me incredulously and said, in a tone of utter bemusement, āBut ā I am very good.ā
I stopped crying on the spot. In the last twenty-four hours or so of one doctor after another, no one had said anything that reassuring to me. He clearly just knew his own competence so well that the idea of someone being scared anyway was literally incomprehensible to him. What more could I possibly ask for?
(He was right. The procedure was very extended, because the tooth that needed to be removed was in bits, but there was zero pain at any point. And, as he promised, my teeth were so close together that they shifted to fill the gap to where there genuinely is none anymore, itās just a little easier to floss on that side.)
But Dr. Z.ās insane competence wasnāt just limited to oral surgery.
When I met Dr. Z., he, like most doctors Iāve had, asked me if I was in college, and where, and what I was studying. When I say āmath,ā most doctors respond with āoh, wow, good for youā or possibly āwhat do you want to do with that after college?ā
Dr. Z. wanted to know what kind of math.
I gave him the thirty-second laymanās summary that I give people who are foolish enough to ask that. He responded with āoh, you meanāā and the correct technical terms. I confirmed that was indeed what I meant (and keep in mind, this was upper-division college math, you donāt take this unless youāre a math major). He asked cogent follow-up questions, and there ensued ten or so minutes of what Iād call āsmall talkā except for how it was an intensely technical mathematical discussion.
He didnāt, as far as I can tell, have any kind of formal math background. He just ⦠knew stuff.
I was a competitive fencer at this point in time, so when he asked if I had any questions about the surgery that would be necessary, I asked him if Iād be okay to fence while I had my jaw wired shut, or if it would interfere with breathing.
āFencing?ā he said.
āYes,ā I said, ālike swordfighting,ā because this is another conversation I got to have a lot. (People assume theyāve misheard you, or occasionally they think you mean building fences.)
āWhich weapon?ā
āUh. Foil.ā
āNo, it wonāt be safe,ā and he went off into an explanation of why.
Turns out, he was also a serious fencer ā and, when I mentioned my fencing coach, an old friend of his. (I asked my fencing coach later, and, oh yes, Dr. Z., a good friend of mine, excellent fencer.) (My coach was French. Dr. Z. was Israeli. I never saw Dr. Z. around the club or anything. I have no idea how they knew each other.)
So this was weird enough that later, when I was home, I looked Dr. Z. up on Yelp. His reviews were stellar, of course, but that wasnāt the weird thing.
The weird thing was that the reviews were full of people ā professionals in lots of different fields ā saying the same thing: I went to Dr. Z. for oral surgery, and he asked me about what I did, and it turned out he knew all about my field and had a competent and educated discussion with me about the obscure technical details of such-and-such.
All sorts of different fields, saying this. Lawyers. Businessmen. Musicians.
As far as I can tell, itās not that I just happened to be pursuing the two fields he had a serious amateur interest in ā he just seemed to be extremely good at literally everything.
I have no explanation for this. Possibly he sold his soul to the devil.
He did a damn good job on my surgery.
#op your oral surgeon is an immortal
Some god is slumming it on Earth with maxed-out stats helping people and his dive bar of choice is oral surgery.

What happens once you kill yourself? Because I'm ready to go.
You wanna know what happens once you kill yourself? Your mother comes home from work and finds her baby dead and she screams and runs over to you and tries to get you to wake up but you wonāt and she keeps screaming and shaking you and her tears are dripping onto your face and your dad hears all the screaming and runs into the room and he canāt even speak because the child that he loved and the child that he watched grow up is gone forever and finally your little sister runs into the room to see what all the fuss is about and she sees you dead. The person she looked up to and loved. The person she bragged about to Ā her friends, the person she wanted to be just like when she grew up, the person that made her feel safe. But sheās never really going to get to grow up and smile and laugh and love because sheāll always be consumed with this feeling of missing you. And now thereās something missing from your family and they can barely look at each other anymore because everything reminds them of you but youāre gone and hurts more than anything. and you think that your mom never cared because she was always busy and yelling at you to finish your homework and clean your room and forgot to say I love you sometimes but really, she loved you more than anything and she doesnāt leave the house anymore, she canāt even get out of bed and sheās getting thinner and thinner because itās too hard to eat. Your father had to quit his job and he doesnāt sleep anymore, every time he closes his eyes he sees his baby dead, and the image never goes away no matter how much alcohol he drinks. And at school your best friend sees that your seat is empty and she gets this sick feeling in her stomach and thatās when she hears the announcement. You killed yourself. And suddenly sheās screaming and crying in the middle of class and no one even bothers comforting because theyāre all Ā busy sitting there staring at your empty seat with tears dripping down their cheeks and all she wants is for you to hug her and tell her itās gonna be okay like you always did, but this time, youāre not there to do it, everything is dark now that youāre gone and her grades are slipping, she barely goes to school anymore and she ended up in hospital after taking too many pills because she wanted to see you again. the girls who used to make fun of the way you dressed feel their throats get tight, they donāt talk to each other anymore, they donāt talk to anyone, theyāre all in therapy trying so hard not to blame themselves but nothing works. and your teacher who always gave you a hard time stares blankly at the wall, she quits her job a few days later. And then your boyfriend hears the news and he canāt breathe, he still calls you a lot just to hear your voice and he talks to you on facebook but you never message him back, he canāt fall in love again because every girl he meets reminds him of you, heās never going to get over you, he loved you and he cries himself to sleep every night, hating himself and slicing his skin because he couldnāt save you and heās never going to hold you in his arms or hear you laugh again. Now everyone who knew you, whether they were a big part of your life or someone you passed in the hallway a few times a week, they carry this aching feeling around inside them because youāre gone, and they miss you, and they donāt know why you left but it mustāve been their fault and they shouldāve stopped you and they shouldāve told you they loved you more and that feeling is never going to go away. And so you killed yourself
but you killed everyone else around you too.Ā

Once youāve looked over all those cool links, I have some general advice for you on how you can have some sort of support system going for you:
Reasons to move out of home
You may decide to leave home for many different reasons, including:
wishing to live independently
location difficulties ā for example, the need to move closer to university
conflict with your parents
being asked to leave by your parents.
Issues to consider when moving out of home
Itās common to be a little unsure when you make a decision like leaving home. You may choose to move, but find that you face problems you didnāt anticipate, such as:
Unreadiness ā you may find you are not quite ready to handle all the responsibilities.
Money worries ā bills including rent, utilities like gas and electricity and the cost of groceries may catch you by surprise, especially if you are used to your parents providing for everything. Debt may become an issue.
Flatmate problems ā issues such as paying bills on time, sharing housework equally, friends who never pay board, but stay anyway, and lifestyle incompatibilities (such as a non-drug-user flatting with a drug user) may result in hostilities and arguments.
Your parents may be worried
Think about how your parents may be feeling and talk with them if they are worried about you. Most parents want their children to be happy and independent, but they might be concerned about a lot of different things. For example:
They may worry that you are not ready.
They may be sad because they will miss you.
They may think you shouldnāt leave home until you are married or have bought a house.
They may be concerned about the people you have chosen to live with.
Reassure your parents that you will keep in touch and visit regularly. Try to leave on a positive note. Hopefully, they are happy about your plans and support your decision.
Tips for a successful move
Tips include:
Donāt make a rash decision ā consider the situation carefully. Are you ready to live independently? Do you make enough money to support yourself? Are you moving out for the right reasons?
Draw up a realistic budget ā donāt forget to include āhiddenā expenses such as the propertyās security deposit or bond (usually four weeksā rent), connection fees for utilities, and home and contents insurance.
Communicate ā avoid misunderstandings, hostilities and arguments by talking openly and respectfully about your concerns with flatmates and parents. Make sure youāre open to their point of view too ā getting along is a two-way street.
Keep in touch ā talk to your parents about regular home visits: for example, having Sunday night dinner together every week.
Work out acceptable behaviour ā if your parents donāt like your flatmate(s), find out why. It is usually the behaviour rather than the person that causes offence (for example, swearing or smoking). Out of respect for your parents, ask your flatmate(s) to be on their best behaviour when your parents visit and do the same for them.
Ask for help ā if things are becoming difficult, donāt be too proud to ask your parents for help. They have a lot of life experience.
If your family home does not provide support
Not everyone who leaves home can return home or ask their parents for help in times of trouble. If you have been thrown out of home or left home to escape abuse or conflict, you may be too young or unprepared to cope.
If you are a fostered child, you will have to leave the state-care system when you turn 18, but you may not be ready to make the sudden transition to independence.
If you need support, help is available from a range of community and government organisations. Assistance includes emergency accommodation and food vouchers. If you canāt call your parents or foster parents, call one of the associations below for information, advice and assistance.
Where to get help
Your doctor
Kids Helpline Tel. 1800 55 1800
Lifeline Tel. 13 11 44
Home Ground Services Tel. 1800 048 325
Relationships Australia Tel. 1300 364 277
Centrelink Crisis or Special Help Tel. 13 28 50
Tenants Union of Victoria Tel. (03) 9416 2577
Things to remember
Try to solve any problems before you leave home. Donāt leave because of a fight or other family difficulty if you can possibly avoid it.
Draw up a realistic budget that includes āhiddenā expenses, such as bond, connection fees for utilities, and home and contents insurance.
Remember that you can get help from a range of community and government organizations.Ā

why do black people use you in the wrong context? such is "you ugly" instead of "you're ugly" I know u guys can differentiate, it's a nuisance
you a bitch
Itās called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.
So an utterance like āyou a bitchā in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.
Whatās more, itās been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copulaĀ contractionĀ occurs in so-called āStandard American English.ā That is, the basic sentence āYou are greatā can become āYouāre greatā in SAE and āYou greatā in AAVE, but āI know who you areā cannot become āI know who youāreā in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get āI know who youā in AAVE.
In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.
This is the most intellectual drag Iāve ever read.
I like to imagine that mythical races of beings that are only one gender/sex are actually either sexless or the males and females look so much alike that they find it to be too inconvenient to explain to humans.
Humans: Ah, clearly all nymphs are women.
Nymphs, who are literally plants: What
Human: So are dwarves all men?
Dwarf: What? Iām clearly a woman. Look at the way Iāve styled my hair. Hey by the way what happened to your girlfriendās beard?
Human:
Dwarf:
Human: Okay so there was clearly a miscommunication somewhere along the line in the past century or two
Harpy: Aaahhhh! Get off my island! Iāll eat you!!!!!!
Human: Get away from me vile she-monster!
Harpy: Woah what
Human: What
Harpy: Look just get away from the nest my wife is about to lay our first egg
Human: Oh well you couldāve just said so. Iāll be going.
Harpy: Thanks bro.
Human: No problem.
Human: So whatās your gender
Cyclops: Child of Poseidon.
Human: But like whatās in your pants
Cyclops: Rage.
as a genderless person i HIGHLY APPROVE of this post
As a genderfluid person Iām glad this is reaching the intended audience.
Anon Hate IS Illegal.
Guys, Iām not kidding.
Suicide-baiting, cyberharassmemt, cyberstalking, death/rape threats, and hate speech are illegal in all 50 states as well as Australia and the UK.
Please click on any state to learn exactly what the bullying and/or cyberbullying law(s) cover.

So.
Next time you get hit with anon hate?
Casually remind them you can very easily take this to the next level. And they can earn jail time while you lay back in your chair, having saved yourself and everyone else from a violent criminal.
Your online actions have real life consequences.

Take action. And make sure the lives of these bullies are truly wrecked.
Iāve seen anon hate time and time again in fandom communities; just recently, a beloved writer I follow was sent suicide messages despite openly talking about their struggles with mental illness. Nothing I say will convince hateful people that this isnāt right, so Iāll leave this post here instead.
I donāt have much to add that this post doesnāt already address, but I want to reiterate to any hateful anons out there that your actions have consequences. If someone you sent hate to does in fact harm themselves, or worse, you will be tried no matter your age or reasoning. You are not safe behind the thin veneer ofĀ āsafetyā that anon brings, because guess what? The internet isnāt truly anonymous, and everything you put on it will remain there forever. It will be traced back to you, and it will affect you later in life. Maybe you donāt understand the concept of feelings or empathy or even suffering, but know that you are talking toāand hurtingāreal people with real feelings.
At least have the decency of coming off anon so people know who to block. Youāre not welcome in fandom spaces (or any, for that matter). Wallow in your cynicism and self-loathing by your lonesome, because I can assure you, that will be your future if you uphold that hateful attitude for the rest of your life.
